This book is the best algorithm/data structure I ever took (or wish I had something equivalent when I was in school). I have finished half of the book's content. These points are what I think this book really stand out among its peers.- Every problem solution is not just a solution, but an analysis of the problem just like what you are expected to do during an interview. Starting with a brute-force approach, the book guides you through why the brute-force solution is inefficient, and optimize on that.- Every solution has detailed complexity analysis, which is often expected from your interviewer. The book also includes the deduction of the time complexity, rather than just throw you a big O notation and let you guess- The code is of high quality, using meaningful variable names, the code itself is self-explanatory (which contains useful comments too)- The study plan is a great structure to guide your learning if you are on a tight schedule (from 2 weeks to months, your journey is all planned out)- There are also lots of tips on the non-programming part of the interview, which is just as important IMHOLast but not least, this book made me fall in love with algorithms and I start to write better code at work. Whether you are preparing for a job interview, you should give this book a read.

Going through this book prepares you incredibly well to think critically for your interviews. There's no substitute for pure practice, and this is a great place to get it. As a bonus, there's a table outlining key questions per chapter to review given your appropriate timeframe (3 days, 1 week, 1 month, 4 months). This is essentially a list of the most important questions to cover per chapter, which comes in handy because you likely don't have time to go through every single question. Each chapter starts with good refresher material to read over before presenting the questions. The questions themselves: I have seen either the exact questions or very similar variants in most of my interviews. The questions in other resources seem to be a bit too easy. The question statements are very clear and well-defined. I feel like other resources present some of their questions more vaguely; while that vagueness is something you may experience in an interview setting, it helps to have the clarity that this book provides in its questions. It gives you a good place to start without having to look in the answers section. The hints are a nice touch, and the solutions are well explained. I very much appreciate the acknowledgement/discussion of the brute-force solutions before going into the more elegant solutions. Variants of the questions are also presented in the solutions section (although solutions to the variants are not).As far as I'm aware, this is the best resource out there. As a tip for your interviewing practice: if possible, have a friend pick out questions at random for you and read them aloud. Knowing what chapter the question is from likely reveals which data structure makes the most sense, and that's something you'd usually have to find out for yourself in a real interview.

This book organizes the domain of interview questions and how to solve them. It provides over 300 questions and ranks them by type and difficulty. It discusses not only the solution, but discusses algorithmic complexity and what should be considered inefficient solution versus an elegant more efficient one. It also gives a study plan based on your time horizon to starting to interview. It really covers all the bases. Finally is discusses C++11 syntax and features in solving it.It also includes non technical advice about resume preparation, the interview process and what not to do. It really covers all the bases for interviewing in the IT industry as a software developer.

I worked with the data science association on their new standards for "Data Scientist" interviews (entry salary of $125,000), and both real questions and after interview polls were included for the biggest names in data today, from the web to corporate and government IT. "Data Scientist" is one of the hottest new jobs out there today, and some companies are even forming CDSO jobs--Chief Data Science Officer! To begin, ALL FOUR of the books in this review are 5 star "superstars" for IT interviews. The two problems are, my library customers want to know the top two, and our Amazon shoppers want to know if they can get away with one, two, three, or if they have to buy all four! Of course the answer depends both on the focus of your resume, and the overlap/focus in the four books.First, the summary, by author, title/Amazon link, year published/edition, number of pages, trim and cost, problems included, main language(s) foci. These four are the most frequently purchased by the over 100,000 libraries (including corporate technical libraries and schools as well as private and public) in our database. (Note: page counts are via visual inspection at the time of this writing, not Amazon stats. Pages can vary with on-demand books.).Aziz, Elements of Programming Interviews: 300 Questions and Solutions by Aziz, Adnan, Prakash, Amit, Lee, Tsung-Hsien 1st (first) Edition (10/11/2012), 2012, 481 pages, 6 x 9, $25, 300 problems (mostly C++, concurrency in Java, discrete math in formulas and English)McDowell, Cracking the Coding Interview: 150 Programming Questions and Solutions, 2011 (5th edition), 500 pages, 6 x 9, $23, 150 problems, (mostly all Java except of course the C, C++ question sections!)Guiness, Ace the Programming Interview: 160 Questions and Answers for Success, 2013, 419 pages, 6 x 9, $20, 160 problems, (mostly Java and C# but some unusual JavaScript, SQL, Ruby and Perl examples too)Mongan, Programming Interviews Exposed: Secrets to Landing Your Next Job, 2013 (ed. 3), 301 pages, 7.4 x 9, $18, 150+ problems (C, C++, C#, Java)All four of these fine prep texts cover the usual suspects in Algorithms and Data structures, including a focus on "scalable" problems of most concern to the Amazons, Googles, Facebooks, etc. of the world. These include recursion, arrays, lists, hash tables, binary searches and trees, and other foundation coding subjects. All also cover the usual tricks, brain teasers, presentation problems, prep, process, etc. issues, and in the case of Cracking, specifics on many different company processes. The divergence is in the "extras." Aziz jumps into parallel computing and covers discrete math (in grad school joke terms, all the computer oriented math that has been taken out of high school courses). McDowell has an unusually well written probability section. Guiness is very up to date with cross platform apps and concurrent programming nightmares, and goes into both more depth and detail on individual topics like big O notation. Mongan is published by wrox, and has not only technical editors, but outstanding web resources. His database section is the most robust of the group.Aziz and McDowell are print on demand, which usually means there are many more errors in early going, but much faster correction of them via almost weekly files to the printer. Guiness is Wiley and bulletproof. We've tested the code extensively in all four (my payroy sister programmers, not me!) and ALL of them are outstanding, with very few errors at this writing, which can only get better fast in the two PODs, and wasn't a problem to begin with via the technically edited wrox and wiley teams.Surprisingly, there is NOT a lot of overlap in solutions in these four texts, just as there IS a lot of overlap in the questions (strings, arrays, binaries, hashes... structures are structures and algos are algos). The difference in ALL these books (as opposed to a Cormen) is that the algorithm examples are not academic--they give you many options to "cheat" - and most of the cheats are more real world than techniques given in the 1,300 page algo function texts.McDowell is the industry standard, but she teaches very much to Google, as does Aziz, meaning web focus, and even a little forgiveness on php, but NO forgiveness on memory or scalability. If you're a library client and have to pick two, we advise one from the McDowell/ Aziz dyad and one from the Guiness/ Mongan dyad. If you're applying for a job with a specific language requirement, these self sort, although of course all are object oriented today. For shoppers preparing for a real interview: buy all four. I mean, come on. This is your future! You can get all four for the price you'd pay for a larger (way less useful) algo + data structure or individual language text, and maybe less. Some points about interview technique are common, but all four offer different and important examples in approaches to solutions, even though they share common algorithmic and data structure challenges.IRONY: The only programming area growing faster than data scientist today is at the other end of the big scale spectrum: embedded systems. I kid you not, specialize in embedded, and you're GUARANTEED a dream job, both due to the explosion of these systems, and the rarity of programmers here (but yes, you have to get into circuits!). Our sister Payroy group shows job stats, demand and salaries that are to die for if you go there-- way better than Google. NONE of these books cover it (because other than mobile and server embeds, embedded was traditionally automotive and industrial, but even "Google and Microsoft TV" type ventures are now hungering for it). There is NO good interview book out on embedded yet, but these two are the best of breed in the field itself: 1. Samek (Practical UML Statecharts in C/C++: Event-Driven Programming for Embedded Systems) and 2. White (Making Embedded Systems: Design Patterns for Great Software). Why C and C++? Because that's where the majority of electronics still reside, and "object" programmers in the field often just use the C subset of ++ and don't really get into sexy classes/methods/parents/kids, etc.! 6 months brushing up on this, specializing, and going for an embedded job will be worth years of competing with the interviews in these texts!!!Now, a simple tip. I was part of a team that interviewed for a high level, very high paying digital art programming position at shader joes dot com. One candidate stood out as really technically challenged--she even confused a call with a register in one of her answers! She called herself an "autodidact" - meaning, unlike Yahoo, we can't be recruiting only from the 18 top schools. At the end of her interview, she asked us to check out a disc she'd brought. She had programmed her own video game with movie-real characters, explosions, storyline, etc. using Unity, Maya, blastcode, Python, Lua and C#, with web distributions in Java, HTML 5 and php. She proceeded to explain her entire process, from idea to distribution. She was hired before she could reach the elevator. In olden-days, old timer parlance, don't forget your "portfolio" if you have one! It can trump a LOT of the bureaucratic hurdles!EMAILERS ANSWER: IF you are a manager, rusty at coding, a data scientist, etc. and are in an interview where you have to "understand" coding basics, but not necessarily code, see our review of Karumanchi (Coding Interview Questions).Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review. We always buy the items we review for the sake of objectivity, and although we search for gems, are not shy about trashing an item if it's a waste of time or money for Amazon shoppers. If the reviewer identifies herself, her job or her field, it is only as a point of reference to help you gauge the background and any biases.

Professor Omnes (University of Paris XI) is one of France's noted experimental physicists today. "Quantum Philosophy" is a poetic narrative of science from Ancient Greece to contemporary Quantum Mechanics is written with literary elegance which Arturo Sangalli's translation has preserved.Although there are no equations, this book is not for the beginner. Omnes alludes to people, theories, events and ideas, which if not already known would remain quite mysterious. For the informed philosopher of science it is an insightful account of the main developments leading up to 20th Century formalism and the triumph of mathematics which was necessary to heal the fracture brought about by the post-intuitive sciences of Einstein, Bohr, Godel, Cantor and Hilbert.

It is refreshing to read that classical physics and common sense should be explained from quantum physics, instead of trying to explain and understand qm in ordinary language. (For half a century I have considered classical physics and common sense to be approximations but have recently been surprised to find that even some good physicists fail to start from that assumption.)On the other hand Omnes doesn't really address the most difficult problem: Since the Schrodinger equation is deterministic, where do the probabilities come from? He therefore misses the importance of the observer. His conclusions are good about EPR, but I don't like his discussion of it much. He doesn't see that EPR implies quantum superposition of macroscopic objects. He also makes a related mistake I have seen elsewhere: he thinks it is de-coherence that keeps one from seeing Everett's other worlds, when in fact the explanation is much more basic than that. It follows simply from the linearity of Schrodinger's equation. Decoherence affects the probabilities by preventing two paths to lead to the same outcome, but it in no way affects the individual outcomes. On page 124 there is a common misconception: "From now on, all physicists will rest on even more formal principles which often preclude any intuitive interpretation, when they do not openly defy common sense, or what we believe common sense to be." Modern physics certainly defies common sense, but it is intuitive to physicists, just as mathematics is intuitive to mathematicians. As physics becomes more abstractly mathematical, it does not stop being intuitive, physical intuition becomes less like common sense and more like mathematical intuition. (A ''New Yorker'' article on mathematicians vividly explained, to the rest of us, how intuitive pure mathematics is.)

Quite simply, this may be one of the best books in recent history,on quantum theory and its role in the philosophy of science. Theauthor, admirably, does not insult his reader by leaving out theimportant mathematics needed to make quantum theory comprehensible.Neither are mathematical models left to speak for themselves; rather, the meaning of the theory is carefully and skillfully guided throughthe abstract symbols.Honors should also go to translator. One never feels that this easyto read book was ever written in any language but English.

There are many books that aim to explain quantum mechanics to the general public, but Omnes takes a different tack. His goal is nothing less than to provide a scientific foundation for a new philosophy of knowledge (epistemology). This is a big job, and Omnes, a French physicist who has contributed to the theory of quantum decoherence, deserves a gentleman's "C" for making the attempt. Potential readers must be warned, however, that Omnes - quite astonishingly as a physicist writing for a (presumably) non-technical audience - does not take time to explain the concepts of quantum mechanics (wave function, superposition, decoherence, etc.) which are essential to understanding his discussion. Because of this, it is highly recommended that before tackling Omnes, readers should at least have read a serious popular treatment such as Gribbin or Nick Herbert (to name only two of many). The book under review is the 1999 hardcover translation of Roland Omnes' "Philosophie de la science contemporaine" ("Philosophy of Contemporary Science"), which was written in 1994. A 2002 paperback edition is also available. The book is about 290 pages long. It contains a glossary and index, but does not contain footnotes or a bibliography. The first half of the book tells a well-known story of the rise of empirical physics and mathematics (other sciences are not considered) from the Pre-Socratics through the 18th century in Europe, followed by the triumph of formalism in the 19th century and the first startling developments in 20th century physics. While perceptively and gracefully told, such a rapid review of the history of science has to suffer by the speed with which the author covers 2,000 years of scientific developments. The second half of the book moves to the present in discussing the implications of quantum mechanics towards the foundations of a new theory of knowledge. These chapters read like a series of interconnected essays, which circle around some rather big ideas: (1) it is possible to recover common-sense knowledge about ordinary objects from the formalism of quantum mechanics, (2) the theory of quantum decoherence is sufficient to dispose of certain well-known problems, such as Schroedinger's Cat, that result from naively applying quantum superposition to classical objects, and (3) there are two kinds of metaphysical entity: a Logos, as represented by mathematics and logic, and a Reality, as represented by physics.Omnes' key point in all of this, is that the future theory of knowledge will be solidly grounded on a firm scientific basis; but he himself admits that the presentation in this book is only the start of a sketch of such a grand plan.In summary, while I found some things of interest in the book, and appreciated its graceful and literate writing style, I was put off by a general superficiality and incompleteness of treatment, an inadequate explanation of concepts, and especially by the author's unfortunate and all too frequent resort to bald "proof by assertion" instead of the discussion, give-and-take, and scholarly references which are expected even in a popular or semi-popular work.

My 11yo daughter is going into the 6th grade this year and this book was on her summer reading list. We purchased it for her on her kindle. My daughter’s words: “It started out kinda slow, but when they got going, it started getting interesting. The story had a great ending, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it! I absolutely loved this book.”

Got this for y daughter to read for the summer. My daughter loved this book!

Another great adventure story, this time set on the Alabama coast. Get ready to follow Julie on a scuba dive for her life. Watt Key is a wonderful southern story teller.

It's easy reading the story line is believable keeps you wanting to see what happens next

This is one of the best books I have read since school began. I read it in one sitting. Julie Sims is spending the summer with her father. He has a dive business. Julie has been diving since she was very small. When she gets to her dad's house she realizes his business is quickly going down the drain. He manages to get a client willing to pay his high price. Unfortunately, he can tell from the beginning that this father son duo is going to be trouble. With her father not feeling well and unwilling to cancel the dive, he sends his daughter Julie down with the clients. It is immediately apparent that they don't care about listening to instructions. A series of events leave Jamie, Shane and his father floating in the open ocean. Their dive boat has disappeared. It soon becomes obvious that something has happened and that if they are to survive they are on their own. This is one of those books where you read about a catastrophic event and think, "wow they made it" things can't get any worse, only to discover that is exactly what this author has done. This is an intense read and one I definitely recommend.

The action begins immediately, in this novel. Two overconfident males with spear guns on a deep dive with a girl guide spells looming disaster. Julie, Shane, and Shane’sfather end up adrift at sea in scuba gear. This gripping scenario in Deep Water is more vivid than any Hollywood version. Julie is familiar with the gear and has the knowledge, strength, and determination to survive for days. They battle thirst, sun, sharks, currents, storms, and hypothermia.Key, a diver himself, has a knack for description. He also has a clear understanding of human nature and appreciation for the sea, and he fills the book with surprises. With Deep Water, Watt Key stands with Scott O’Dell, Jean Craighead George, and Gary Paulsen, as one of the great writers of survival stories in children’s literature.Island of the Blue DolphinsGreen BoyHatchetJulie of the Wolves (HarperClassics)My Side of the Mountain Guided Reading Classroom SetA Girl Named Disaster by Nancy FarmerFar NorthTake Me to the River

When I first started the book I wasn't sure how I would feel about it. However, get past the first part and the story picks up pace and is a great story. The characters are well developed and it is nice to see how this experience changes them. Once it gets going it is an enjoyable read. It is a quick read after you get past the beginning. The story line was intriguing and I liked how the author took us on the journey with the characters. I would recommend it.I received an eARC from NetGalley

Gripping survival story for upper elementary-middle school.
