inspiring and relatable and equally hilarious. so much to laugh about if you are chinese (those "little plastic chairs for sitting on the kitchen floor..." had me laughing so hard), so much empathy if you are an american chinese ("following your dreams is how you become homeless..."), and so much wisdom that anyone could take to heart ("being american is opportunity and choice..."). one of my new favorite memoirs!

You feel like he’s a buddy from school who followed his dream and made it big. But was still your buddy.

I would recommend this book to everyone who moved from Asia to America. Jimmy is a funny guy; his jokes made my stomach hurt from laughing too much. Even though I didn't know Jimmy was an actor and half of his book focused on his way to success in Hollywood, I still think this book is inspiring and worth the read.

I really enjoyed this. Jimmy's story is relatable to a lot of modern first-gen Asian immigrants trying to find their way in Western society without leaving their home culture behind. Even more important than the story are the insights he shares with it, and arguably the most important ones come from the point where he thinks he "made it."It's a quick read, too.

Being a fan of his work, I constantly had a mental picture of the author going through his life experiences. I was smiling most of the time I was reading this book. It is a great story during a time where we can use a reminder of what makes America great.

This was a quick and enjoyable read. Jimmy O. Yang describes his inner feelings and aspirations as a young immigrant in a thoughtful and touching way. His successes are impressive, and I predict a bright and productive future for him.

Wow. I have been a fan of Jimmy O. Yang for a good while, and I must say this was a very well written autobiography of an immigrant who overcame adversity to achieve what he ultimately considers his American Dream. I'm a fan of underdog stories, and I honestly read this book from beginning to end in one day. It was difficult to stop reading without satisfying my curiosity about Mr. O. Yang's journey into success while also finding his experiences somewhat similar to my own. I hope, one day, Mr. O. Yang translates this into a feature film to which I would most definitely watch. A must read for anyone who has ever felt like an underdog who feels they can't win; an outsider trying to fit in; a seemingly hopeless visionary fighting to make their dreams a reality; a person who may feel foreign yet familiar in their own skin within different worlds. Thank you, Mr. O. Yang, for sharing your story; it is truly inspirational.

I think Jimmy’s experience resonates with many, if not all, Asian Americans. For example, I can relate to putting aside my career dreams for a more acceptable choice because I did not want to become poor or homeless. I also know all too well how regardless of whether you’re fresh off the boat, American born or a 2nd/3rd etc generation Asian American-how well you assimilate means nothing because you are still seen as a foreigner. This book was a great read with wonderful insight, it made me laugh and cry.

I was hesitant to pick this up, I have not had good luck with video game novels in the past, I've either not liked or hated the three or so I've tried (Ready Player One and Armada by Ernest Cline, and Arena by Holly Jennings.) and now tend to just outright skip them. But I thought that if anyone could write a video game novel that I would actually like it would probably be Marie Lu. This book surprised me more than any book has in a long time, I'm just not usually one to be surprised very often and actually tend to really enjoy figuring out what is going to happen next in books, movies and shows. But wow I did not see a lot of this book's twists coming, I expected one thing to happen, and then it didn't, instead there was a twist I did not expect, and that alone made this a rare read for me.I loved a lot about this novel, but one of the biggest things was that it has a heavy mystery vibe to it. Our main character is a bounty hunter, but she has to do a lot of investigating to figure out who Zero is and she's pretty much a digital detective. And I loved that, it's been a while since I've read any mysteries or books with mysteries and I've missed them. Though I knew who Zero was about half way through, but there were other more surprising twists. I loved the characters, Emika is a great heroine to follow and Hideo was also a rare kind of character. The background characters were interesting as well and I'm looking forward to learning more about them in the next book. And speaking of this being the start of a series, holy crap that ending. That was a huge surprise and again I didn't see it coming. The last 30 pages were a roller coaster and I'm still thinking about it. Overall this was a great sci-fi read with great world building, action, characters, and twists. I would recommend it if you're looking for a new YA sci-fi novel, and I'm looking forward to the next book.

I bought this book on a whim. I tend to preorder a bunch of books when they first catch my attention and then I completely forget about them until they show up on my front door step. Warcross was one of them. Originally, I just put the book aside with the rest of the books that I've yet to read but then randomly two months later I got curious about it and decided to start reading it. And I'm so happy that I did. This is my first book from Marie Lu and I was pleasantly surprised. I love the world building she does with this book and the characters are simply amazing. I connected with Emika from the beginning and I was so invested in her story. But not only her story, but all the characters. Hideo was such an interesting character I loved him so much, even though by the end he left me feeling very confused. Honestly I could read books about all the characters on her team because they were all so interesting and diverse.Plot wise, I was engaged the entire time. There were a few things that I was able to figure out before the unveiling but this book still managed to surprise me. I wasn't really a big fan of the ending and the big reveal but I'm curious to see how things will go in the next book. For the romance, I was 100% in love with it. I do wish that there was a bit more romance as it felt more like background to the games and all but I was definitely swooning a bit at their little moments together. I loved that the main characters were a bit older than the usual YA characters (Emika 18, Hideo 21) and I loved how this book handled some more serious topics or just made mention of things I don't think typical YA does. I do wonder if Marie Lu will follow stead like Maas and write more descriptive sex scenes (I'd be down for that) but I definitely thought the few kissing scenes we did get were quite steamy too.I can't wait to read the conclusion to this series and I'd definitely recommend for everyone to check this book out!

I picked up this book because I normally enjoy author’s visions of the future of VR gaming. This book started with some interesting ideas, but quickly became absurd and ended with no resolution, purely setting up the next book in the series. In Warcross the majority of humanity spends a great deal of time in VR/AR, although beyond some standard AR uses (language/sign translations, advertisements) the majority of the use seems to be the Warcross game, and this is where things start to stumble. The game is a team based arena competition where two teams of 5 face off against each other to collect the artifact floating above one of the enemies heads. There are a handful of these matches described in the book, and they go on and on and then just end with someone deciding to walk up to the enemy with the artifact and grab it. It sounds incredibly boring to be so popular. It’s made even worse by the fact that in some of these matches you can buy idiotic power ups that just win you the match. So the game within the book is just incredibly poorly though out, and the sections that describe it are hard to get through. The central mystery is introduced about half way through the book, and is a bit interesting initially, but all of that interest is continually eroded until the last 10% or so of the book where every bit of intelligence jumps off a cliff and the book becomes a complete mess.As I read a book I will normally think through how I would review it. By the halfway point I was thinking this book would be a strong 3 star, it’s got some serious problems with the game that is at its center, but it is still interesting. As I approached the end I was shocked with how poorly thought out everything was, and with the final twist I almost put the book down with only pages to go. The final handful of pages make almost everything that previously happened in the book seem completely idiotic, none of it makes any sense with what is revealed. I don’t believe I have ever read another book that so quickly nose dives to a zero star rating (unfortunately Amazon doesn’t allow zero stars, so this book received one star because it is in fact a book I guess?)Skip this one and read anything else.
