Amazon.com Review

The second of three books published by the Center for Environmental Structure to provide a "working alternative to our present ideas about architecture, building, and planning," A Pattern Language offers a practical language for building and planning based on natural considerations. The reader is given an overview of some 250 patterns that are the units of this language, each consisting of a design problem, discussion, illustration, and solution. By understanding recurrent design problems in our environment, readers can identify extant patterns in their own design projects and use these patterns to create a language of their own. Extraordinarily thorough, coherent, and accessible, this book has become a bible for homebuilders, contractors, and developers who care about creating healthy, high-level design.

This book is insightful and fun to read. It is also a book that is easy to pick up and read a bit, and put itdown and come back later to pick up where you left off, because it is broken into many very short chapters, each of which contain a key idea. It's hard to describe this book, because it is so unique in its approachto telling the reader "how things ought to be" concerning everything from civil planning and city layout,to floor-plans, to architectural design, to furnishing. The author is very opinionated and does not shy awayfrom boldly telling you what is wrong with the physical constructs of our urban, suburban, and rural areas, and how all of that should be properly done in his imagined ideal world. In some ways, this book is like reading the professional diary of your crazy uncle who is constantly rantingabout what's wrong with the world, and how he thinks it should be set right. However, after reading it fora while, you get the impression that the author is not really crazy, so much as he is a brilliant eccentricwhose experience and understanding is based on an extremely broad appreciation of how human beings chooseto craft their surroundings, and how we get it right, and how we get it wrong, and why.Be forewarned... you are not going to agree with everything the author says.I don't agree, for example, with his outlandish claim that living in a home that is more than four storiesabout the ground will eventually make you crazy, because I have loved living on the top floor of myhigh-rise condo for the past ten years. I also don't agree with his idea that all kitchen cabinets shouldbe open shelves with no doors, because the doors just get in the way, hide what is contained therein, and are essential useless. I must admit, however, that I love reading the author's insights on thingswith which I disagree with him, and I have to admit that even on such issues... he's got good points! Many times I find myself saying "Almost, thou persuadest me."To be fair, I actually do agree with the author's views regarding the vast majority of his observations,as they are all just good common-sense approaches, and I must admit they often leave me thinking"Yes, that's such a beautifully simple truth... why don't we always build it that way, or do it that way?"This book gives you the benefit of the sage wisdom of an author who is genuinely worth readingand considering. Even though this book is decades-old, most of its observations are timeless. It's so hard to classify the book. Is it a Western approach to Feng Shui ... without all the questionableEastern Spiritualism, and more of practical philosophy on how to best craft your environment?Or is it better described as foundational reading for everyone from a City Planner, to an Architect,to anyone building a house, to anyone one looking to make their home a more pleasant place? However you choose to classify it... this book is a unique, delightful treatise on how things shouldideally be in order for human beings to be more comfortable, productive, and happy in their surroundings.

Other reviews correctly address this book's wholesomeness and holistic approach to building good cities and buildings and other structural frames for full, good human lives in a healthy world. Alexander does have a few particular crotchets, however, which have a surprisingly deep effect on the structure of the language he lays out here. Watch for these, and be reminded (as Alexander also reminds you) that patterns are the product of the people who made them, and may disappear or change for different groups.1. Swimming. He is intensely focused on swimming as a major factor in civic planning and personal recreation. It's a considerable contortion at multiple points.2. Dancing, especially in the streets. Alexander was a great fan of the Peckham Clinic which focused on (guess what) swimming and dancing as exercise and recreation. It shows.3. Many of his patterns make an uncomfortably dated misstep when they pertain to women--and another, subtler one when dealing with work concerns and issues of children while not mentioning women directly. Women working outside the home is not a gutiding concern or a base assumption for him; a base assumption IS that women prefer and want to care for children. It's a very important shaping concern for many other parts of life, so this blind spot, characteristic of its time and place and socioeconomic environment, is very significant.4. Disabled people, other than mildly infirm and otherwise hale elderly people, do not exist. Another blind spot.Bear these crotchets in mind as you consider these patterns, and how to find even better patterns for a wonderful world.

Bought this as a gift for a friend. Since its original publication, I have purchased numerous copies as gifts and to have in multiple locations for reference. Written in a series of short 1-2 page chapters, the book goes through an array of critical "place making" criteria based on human behavior. As an architect/urban designer, it is one of my top 5 reference books when thinking through an new project. Although not a book intended to be read cover to cover, some of his other publications are written in a way to show how these "place making" elements can be combined to create a livable human habitat.

In college, I was so intrigued by this way of examining the spaces we live in, from our literal kitchen sink to the way our cities and countries are arranged--and was delighted when my 17-year-old discovered it independently through TED talk etc. recommendations. He treats it like his bible, reading it passage by passage and noticing how the way chairs, streets, etc. are arranged affects how we live. He's considering city planning or something as a career now, but it's also just a really readable, interesting book that ideally, tons of people should read so that we can live in a more beautiful and livable world!

Classic book from the 1970's written by a Berkley, CA and Oregon of University Professor. It is for serious architects or engineers who wish to be challenged by values in the way things are built. This man is the Archimedes of city planning. It is a dense read but will fire you up with dreams of a better way to plan humans enjoying each other, living together in balance with resources. It is over 1,000 valuable pages of hope for city planners or individual architects. It is a priceless AND timeless book, worthy to be preserved for 1,000's of years like Archimedes gifts to us. Also, see his more reader friendly "The Timeless Way of Building" only 550 pages long.

This is not just a great Batman comicbook story, but one of my favorite comics ever. And that, not so much of what this means to the medium in the way that Watchmen,Dark Knigh Returns,Asteryos Polyp, etc.did and still do. But in a way that... this is a greatly executed comic book story that praises the medium much more than most give it credit to. Paul Pope is a master storyteller, not the same way that Alan Moore or Frank Miller was/is. He is his own artist in a different way. He "lives" comics in his own distinct style as truly an artform that demands respect on its own special way. He tells a dystopian story not that far away in the future, and drops us right in the middle "of things" and every time that you read this story you get something more... and the second, third time new areas of story unfolds in you mind, hints and pieces that are always there but were not meant for you to consciously get them the first time... but (more) felt. Do not get me wrong, the greatness of this story in part lies to its "appearing" simplicity and you are welcome to read it only once and enjoy it. But if you like it enough and read it again you really enjoy it even more. Greatly designed and executed, at least to my undestanding. I can of course undestand that it is a matter of taste Paul Popes "style" of art, some may not like it, perfectly understandable, but it really is a pity not to praise his incredible storytelling technique and efficiency. One of the few comic (and not only) books that every time I read it I truly enjoy it... in a slightly different way. And what do you expect me to say about "Broken Nose"... or... How cool is that Pope? A true artist.Invest in this book... unless you do not like the art style, everything here is top-notch. Wish for an absolute editon...

This is posssibly the most underrated Batman comic ever. Perfect in every fashion, this is a must read and must own for any Batman fan.

The Batman 100 story which dominates this time is excellent. While I don't care for popes artwork, his storytelling is superb. Well worth reading.

Paul Pope's art and storytelling are amazing. This is one of my all-time favorites. Highly recommended!

Brilliant stuff!!! Highly recommended!

Paul Pope 's Batman year 100 is the kind of Batman I want to know more about . He bleeds , he sweats ..Bravo

I liked both characters but... Why does she (always) have to almost die before they can finish their bond? Why did neither of their 'seers' get a hint of trouble? Why are the sex scenes interchangeable between the books? Why are we supposed to find it funny when Greta insults (almost all) the women (and in the process insults the intelligence of the men) and the women insult Greta based on looks and age? Why is Greta allowed to insult their mate with no consequences from the males? Why is being able to insult Greta (since she called them a slut or something similar) supposed to prove the new female is a dominant wolf? I really don't see much difference between the so called female dominants and the submissives. And it looks like the children are learning to have no respect for Greta too - and yet she is supposed to be a sort of grandmother to most of the kids.I think this series is just getting too repetitive.

REVIEW: "WILD HUNGER" (The Phoenix Pack) by Suzanne WrightSERIES: The Phoenix Pack, Book 7FORMAT: Kindle EditionPUBLICATION DATE: May 28, 2018GENRE: Paranormal RomanceREVIEW BY: NoeticalRATING: 5/5 StarsPOV: Third person, alternating between hero and heroine's point of view.As a longtime fan of Suzanne Wright’s novels about both The Phoenix and Mercury Packs, I was happy to see Patrick "Trick" Hardy, enforcer of the The Phoenix Pack, finally find his mate, half–wolf shifter Francesca "Frankie" Newman. Although Trick knew her when they were both "pups," a family tragedy tore Frankie away from pack life when she was only three, before either knew they were true mates. She was subsequently raised by her mother's human family. Ms. Wright also enriches their romance with a thrilling mystery involving their past.Frankie is creative, bright, and courageous. Trick is dominant, possessive, protective...and hot as hell, but the thing he offers Frankie that no other in her life has before is full acceptance and reverence of everything that she is. As with every other book in this series, it frequently had me laughing out loud.In more ways than one, this was an excellent addition to the series. The publisher provided me with a free copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. However, I liked it enough to buy my own copy. Highly recommended for followers of the Phoenix Pack, and anyone who loves hot shifters and kicka** heroines.SEXUAL CONTENT: Only suitable for people 18 and older. Several scenes of hot M/F sex, mostly within the context of a relationship. Some explicit sexual activity depicted, including libidinous dialogue during and regarding sex. Backstory alludes to some homosexual (M/M) activity.VIOLENCE: A few scenes with paranormal blood and gore. Backstory alludes to brutal murder.PROFANITY: Extensive use of obscene words. About 436 instances of various profane words occur in the story, including 141 lewd anatomical references. However, it blends within the storyline, such that none of the characters seem crude.HUMOR: As usual for Ms. Wright's novels, I laughed out loud several times.ENDING: Satisfying HEA without a cliffhanger.RATING BREAKDOWN HERO: 5/5 Stars HEROINE: 4.5/5 Stars CHARACTERIZATION: 5/5 Stars ROMANCE: 5/5 Stars SEX SCENE WRITING: 4/5 Stars PLOT: 4.5/5 Stars DIALOGUE: 5/5 Stars MYSTERY: 4/5 Stars HUMOR: 4.5/5 Stars STORYTELLING: 4.5/5 Stars STORY ENDING: 5/5 Stars*******************************OVERALL RATING: 5/5 STARS Is sex the central theme of this book? NO Do I recommend this book? YES Do I recommend this series? YES Do I auto-buy books by this author? YES

Suzanne Wright is one of my favourite authors when it comes to Shifters - I've really enjoyed reading all the books on The Phoenix and The Mercury Packs. The books are always funny and there's always some type of drama/action that means I'm unable to put my iPad down until I've finished the book.I loved Trick and Frankie as a couple. Trick is so sure of himself and had no doubts that Frankie was going to be his. He was so patient with her, and understanding of her need to be more settled and find out more about her early life after being raised by her human relatives. I loved Frankie - she was such a logical thinker, and when faced with some of Tricks past relationships she was confident enough to accept she was what Trick wanted! I hope we get more on Bracken soon - the few glimpses about him in this book has me wondering what's going to happen with him. Bracken next please!!

This is my favorite werewolf series, but Wild Hunger isn't my favorite book in it. I've tried to put my finger on why, but I'm still not entirely sure of the reason for my reaction. This book is about Trick, one of the Phoenix pack's enforcers. For once we have a hero who isn't navel gazing about his problems. Despite having difficult parents, he is well adjusted and is looking forward to being mated. His mate, Frankie, is also a wolf shifter and lives among humans. She is also a sculptor who makes strange, dark pieces. Her father killed her mother and then himself. Frankie saw the whole thing, but doesn't remember it.The plot is good, but possibly not as exciting as some of the other books. The writing is good, but not as funny as usual and I missed the insouciant nature of the previous characters. Suzanne Wright writes jealous exes like no one else and there were a few in this book, which is always fun. This time the encounters weren't as snarky, which was a shame. All in all, a good book.
