I bought this book for my daughter and she loves it. It's a very good companion for violin if you are just started learning to play piano or has been playing piano for just a year.

Apparently you have to buy this for an instructor who know's what it means. While I am much older 50 .. I have a sharp mind and an IQ near 145 ... so it's not me, I know advanced algebra and calculus... so again it's not me... I truly hate when people write like this, then they act as though "you're stupid is the problem" if you can't follow it. The learning curve is simply way too steep to use this for self instruction. As far as I'm concerned if I'm going to an instructor I'm not buying them a book to teach me from .. I'll just learn what they have to offer. This author needs to choose 50 random students, and see how far any can get without asking questions, make notes of ALL questions until all students understand the entire book. Then re write the book with those questions being a guide .... so while perhaps this author is worldly known for instruction .. my guess is that's it's the verbal instruction and not any of these books as a stand alone... just saying ... my two cents.

My dear son is entering his 2nd year of Violin. We ordered this book on his instructors' recommendation and I have not been disappointed. The book contains some sons that he was already playing but has added a lot of new material for him to learn. I am also appreciative of the "Suzuki method". My son's skill level has increased noticeably since using this book through this past month.

I purchased this with the hope of it being a great starting point for me to teach myself violin. As far as violin stuff is concerned, this book is great. However, it contains almost nothing covering music theory. Someone starting off with nothing music wise, this book didnt get me anywhere. I sought out learning material on music theory and after a lot of catching up, I can finally open this book back up.Moral if the story, if you are familiar with music theory already, this book is great. If you are NOT familiar with music theory, get something to help you learn music theory TOO, so that when you are up to speed, you can hit this book running.

I purchased this for my 6yo son as it's what his violin teacher uses for his younger students. This method book has a lot of text and tips throughout, which I think clutters up pages, but to be fair, those tips are rather helpful if you take the time to read them, which I don't think most children will do. I play clarinet, not violin, so I read through the tips and exercises to help me understand how to best help my son practice and improve. The Suzuki method is different from how I learned to play an instrument, so it's been an interesting process for me. Many of the songs from this book can be found on Youtube (played by students) should you need to hear a particular song.

Suzuki is great for training a violinist. It’s just not that easy if you’re training a young string player. Your student will need something a bit less stringent to start out. Once the basics are there (or you have an excellent teacher), Suzuki teaches the skills needed.

I didn't think I would learn the basics of violin in 8 short weeks (with an instructor). I would recommend this to anyone interested in violin

This was recommended by my daughters violin instructor and it has a lot of teaching pages on how to properly hold, play, and practice the violin. we have another brand book that doesn't have nearly as much information in it. This book is truly a violin school book and much better than the others.

Bought this for my 8 year old daughter. She does not like this book at all. The notes are so small. Maybe it was not intended to be for little kids but very very dry.. not much direction.. just notes

This novel focuses primarily on Mary Russell as she transitions from a student to a young woman coming into her majority with considerable personal wealth. Her years as a student carry over into the storyline as the reader spends much of the first half of the book immersed in a course like exploration of theology rather than the expected mystery, although sinister acts are referenced.Mystery plays a secondary role in the book as does Holmes. When the sinister actions come into the story, I found them to be predictable. I cannot say the same for Holmes. He did surprise me with an unexpected development.I do like the Russell and Holmes characters as well as their interplay which helped me get beyond the "elementary" aspects of the plot.Miss King did provide me with a challenge to my vocabulary knowledge. I referenced my dictionary more times while reading this book than any other book I have read in recent memory.

The other negative reviews are spot on. The "case" doesn't even appear until more than half way through the book. What comes before is an endless, boring exposition of theology, mysticism and feminism. Look up authors degrees to see why. It's like she got an audience hooked with the Beekeeper book so she could preach God and women.The ending goes so strongly against the persona that Doyle established. One of the basic tenets of Holmes is that he has no place in his life for the female gender. This author insults Doyle by having HolmesSPOILERMarry someone less than half his age.A promising series cut short by the author's need to proselytize her feminism and denigrate one of her main characters.

In this second novel of Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, Mary is turning 21 and claiming her inheritance and her independence from her aunt. Mary begins to investigate the New Temple of God and its founder, Margery Childs, and finds renewed purpose and satisfaction from her work there. She also connects with her Oxford friend, Veronica Beaconsfield, and enlists Holmes's aide in solving multiple murders. By the time that Russell and Holmes have solved the murder cases and discovered the men who tortured Mary, they decide to marry and become life partners.This was a very good read and I'm looking forward to reading future installments.

Laurie R. King is a new author for me. I read and enjoyed the first book and so ordered this one. Well written and, incidentally, very informative about fairly recent English history and a "woman's place" in that society. In this book, Mary Russell, the very smart but not conventionally pretty orphaned girl, who was placed with an aunt she intensely dislikes until reaching her "majority" is finally old enough to inherit and rid herself of the aunt. Others will relate the story line so I will not. I like this series because of the history and the characters, King's masterful setting of scenes, clothes - it plays like a movie (a good one) - in your head as you read. Never too bloody or gory. Not an ordinary mystery book. Really like these!

This was the first Laurie King book I read, and it inspired me to get all the others on Mary Russell. I love the characters, and the interplay between them. Having a female character give the almost insufferably arrogant Sherlock Holmes a run for his money is quite gratifying, and I love that she is a scholar and American and Jewish. She is often sartorially trans, and slips in and out of gender roles. Mary Russell is complex and wonderful character and the novels with her are full of, as far as I can tell, accurate historical, religious, and cultural references.

Some authors just write well naturally, and Laurie King is definitely one of them. The mental pictures that she creates with her words are so clear, it is as if there is a movie running in my mind's eye as I read. This book is no exception as it deftly sets the scene for the stories that follow it. My only reservation is that in this book, she runs the risk of Mary Russell being too strong a character; perfectly clever and invincible with no cracks in her shell. However, King overcomes that issue by Mary's falling in love with Sherlock -- if that can be called a weakness. It is at least a very human trait, and given Mary's eccentricity, the December-May relationship seems appropriate. In addition, it is heartwarming to see the very logical and cool headed Sherlock in a caring position. Again, more human. I can't wait to read the novels that follow to see how their relationship grows.

I'm a long time Sherlock Holmes fan and finding this series of books was a very happy surprise. Laurie King is a very bright author with an intricate intellect and has done a masterful job of winding, or better, intermingling her stories through the fastidiously constructed history of the brilliant and clever fictional detective.

The book meanders a bit like the middle of a Russian novel. We occasionally lose sight of the central mystery (or even what the mystery is) for delving into Mary Russel's inner thoughts on reaching adulthood, her relationship with Sherlock, and passing touches on the role of women in post WWI Britain. Worth a read.

I enjoyed this book very much. It is full of fantastical beings and events that interface with everyday modern people. That interface is the most compelling underlying motivation of the story, of course. I also like the fact that the main child character is female for a change. Yea!The book is also, in a sense, all about books, and I love books about books. If you have a fairly good knowledge of classic children's literature, you'll enjoy those connections immensely. If you like books, particularly children's books, and you like fantasy and adventure, you will probably enjoy this book.Quotations are used from many other children's and fantasy books. Those make the story even more enjoyable.The writing is creative and interesting, the plot is fantastical and convoluted, the characters are varied and mostly interesting, sometimes likable and sometimes detestable, of course. Some characters aren't clearly good guys or bad guys, which is similar to life as we know it.On the down side, which is minor, I am wondering just who this book was written for. I'm told it's children's literature. But children do not need to read about this much violence, surely, even when it is committed mostly by beings from books rather than reality? I don't know. I also find some plot twists to be very unbelievable, but it is a fantasy, after all.I read this book on the Kindle (as I read most books) and only noticed one potential typo in the book (which is amazingly good, really).

The story was okay. It seemed a bit long and I felt as though I should have just left it at the first one rather than continuing the series. And in this book the author added swear words. :( So I couldn't share in reading this one with my child as I had the first one.

This had made into a movie (Brendan Fraiser) and I'd watched it a couple of years ago, so unfortunately for me I had all of the actors' faces in mind throughout the book and left little to my imagination there, but at least they casted it very well!!(and closely to the book's description - for the most part. The PLOT deviates some, so even if you've seen the movie, you'd be missing out not reading Funke's wonderful writingYou get the plot from other reviews', so I will leave you with this. There are NOT too many books of this genre that are truly original. This is. There are not too many books out there that don't fall into some campy dialogue. This doesn't.I go through books, Kindle and otherwise, and after reading Inkheart, I went and purchased the trilogy hardcopy (of which I'm terribly discerning about what takes up space) because I think this is a classic.My son just read it as well, he's 8, but reading beyond his 2nd grade level, he finished and immediately asked when he's getting the next one!! And has asked me twice, "Is it here yet?"I think it's a testament to Funke's writing, that she can so capture myself and my son so completely.

To be honest, I listened to the audio tape, but this was an awesome story! Enjoyable for adults as well as kids. The suspenseful plot makes you a little fearful and there is some violence, but the pretext of the story makes it fanciful enough to distance you from the events of the story. Still, there is a bit of mystery and you can't put the book down. A must-read classic.

So much happens in this book. I listened to the audiobook and Brendon Fraser did a great job. I wish they would go back and let him do the other two books. I had tears close to the end of the book and can't wait to see what happens in the final book. I like that we get to see more of the fantasy world and what happens there. Because it is in the fantasy world and there are so many characters with a lot going on you do have to be able to focus on what is going on but I enjoyed it.

Bought the trilogy for my 11 year old son at his own request! He doesn't open a book very often and prefers to play video games, so I am glad he found a book set that he enjoys reading. These are NOT little books, they are roughly about 500 pages long and he's on the 3rd one. Well worth the purchase. He even has me reading them and it is a good read for any adult who enjoys reading young adult books. (I'm on the first book)

It's been a very long time since I found a book so captivating that I lose sleep because of it, for it is more important to continue in the story than sleep.I've never read a book that was as unpredictable as this one. I can usually guess things in the story and predict the ending of a book, which causes the story to lose its magic, but it was not so with this book.I cannot wait to read the next book, InkspellI wish that Cornelia Funke was more well known, she is the best storyteller I've ever read!!!!!

This book was chosen for our book club read. I would never have chosen to read this book and really didn’t enjoy reading it for the most part, however, by the time I was nearly finished I felt like I need to read the next two books. Some inourgroup read all three and commented that the next two are not so dark.
