This first edition of "A Food Lover's Guide to Kansas City" is a useful, well-written introduction to the surprisingly varied and high-quality food scene in Kansas City. The book is very up-to-date, covering many restaurants and food stores that only recently opened. Long-time residents will find the book useful and handy, but it will probably be of even greater use to visitors and new residents who want to know more about the food scene in this Midwestern metropolis.Although the book covers a lot of ground, there are still gaps and notable omissions that I hope will be filled in future editions (and I do hope there are future editions)! The coverage of ethnic markets is a bit spotty -- no mention, for example, of the colossal 888 International Asian Market in Johnson County, or a couple of large supermarkets that have very large selections of Mexican ingredients. The book pays somewhat short shrift to suburban Johnson County, with a population that is now larger than Kansas City proper, which has a plethora of ethnic markets and restaurants that are of metro-wide interest. There is little coverage of Northeast Kansas City, which has numerous immigrant communities and restaurants and markets that serve them, and no coverage of Independence, Eastern Jackson County, or nearby Lawrence, KS (home of the University of Kansas and a number of fine restaurants and stores that attract people from the metro area).Those quibbles aside, this is the best book I've seen on the culinary possibilities of Kansas City -- the restaurant and store reviews are well-written and thoughtful and definitely make you want to try (or return to) the restaurants included. Visitors and newcomers will find it invaluable. And the author generously points out other sources of information, in print or online, for finding out even more about Kansas City's culinary resources.

Since my review would be almost identical to the one written by trilingual1946, I will add just this: it would be nice if there were a website for the book where one could suggest places to be included in future additions. (If there is such a site, I was unable to find it.)This little book --especially when paired with a gift certificate from one of the businesses listed-- makes a great gift for anyone new to the KC region or for those who may know only one area of the city. The people to whom we've given this book love it.Even if, like us, you know the city quite well, get yourself a copy and keep in the car. You'll use it more than you think.

We enjoy finding unusual place to eat out, & when my friend recommended this book I found it here & ordered as a gift for my husband. He has already marked new places to visit; we have also found many we've already tried & agree mostly with the summaries about them. Looking forward to more culinary exploration in the KC area.

It would be a crime to live in Kansas City and not own this book. This is an epicurean's guide to Nirvana. It is an excellent listing of all the places you must visit but haven't out of ignorance of their existence. A well written book that actually made me guffaw multiple times. Buy it and check off the places as you visit them. I have lived in Kansas City all my life and this book has made it interesting again.

Gr 1-4-Once again, Burdett has produced a jaunty version of a Shakespeare work that grew from an intensive project with her elementary school students. The central text, composed of labored, uneven couplets, is the least appealing part of the book. Naive drawings, done by the students, are colored with clear, bright markers. Lively written additions from the second and third graders, such as Juliet's diary entries or reports from Verona citizens in response to the feud, show how well immersion in the play can lead to a good understanding by younger children. While readers elsewhere might enjoy a look at their contemporaries' drawings, it seems unlikely that they would derive even a fraction of the understanding of the play and its importance that Burdett's students got from the project. When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history.What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.

As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.

I really love this book. It made understanding a lot easier for my students. ~BUT~ I will say that some parts are a little much. It seems the translator looks for the most vulgar way to word some of Shakespeare's crude jokes (Shakespeare is crude, to be sure--and some of it is quite funny. However, sometimes the translator goes too far the other way). Plus, there were parts that weren't necessarily as sexual in the original as it was presented in the translated version (like scenes that were purposely left ambiguous so that it might have been interpreted in more than one way). This actually took away from the cleverness and thoughtfulness of some of Shakespeare's jokes.Because of this, I had to pre-read all the scenes to choose which scenes we read in this book, and which ones we read from the original text (from the textbook, where students couldn't read the translation). I did find, however, that the classes that used BOTH original and translated readings for the unit had an easier time understanding the original text when challenged to do so (likely because they didn't feel as overwhelmed from days of old text).This is a very useful tool for the classroom. Both versions are important--and, truthfully, some of my students preferred the original text, and some preferred the new text, so switching between the two for certain scenes was a great exercise.

This is such a great reimagining of the Shakespearean play. My students love this version and it keeps their attention with the fast-paced plot, colorful scenes, and flashy costumes. However, this edition is the NEW Music edition of the DVD, so there are added bonuses to this new disc. The music edition features a 45 minute documentary of how they picked the songs that were used in the movie. Twenty years after this film came out, my students are still singing along with some of the songs--they were the perfect choices and were timeless songs (and hey, if my students know Prince's "When the Doves Cry" more than 30 years after the song's initial release, yes, it is timeless).My DVD did not look like the photo (the cover is a bit different, although it does say "Music Edition") but I bought it for the movie and not for the cover. If you are a fan of this version of the movie and you don't have the music edition, you need this one. If you're just a Romeo and Juliet fan and have (gasp!) never seen this 1996 version, go ahead and take a chance. You'll love it.

Many times preachers or speakers give indication of the significance of numbers in Scripture but do not give the rational for their assertions. This book does not only give the rational for the assertion but gives Scriptural trends which one can follow. There is precedence and there are trends which bear out the claims made against each number. Very profitable. I did not read it all in one sitting but I did not read another book before I was finished.

This is my 2nd copy (I loaned the other to a Sailor years ago, and, bless his heart, he never returned it - sure hope h'es using it). I love this book; helps to make a lots of sense about the repetitious use of numbers in the Bible.

First of all this review is primarily about the Kindle edition of this book. I owned the hardcopy and enthusiastically recommend it. I would give it 5 stars.The Kindle edition, on the other hand, is terrible! I'm guessing that this eBook was simply run through a converter without even an attempt at formatting. The text is all jumbled, there are no links within the table of contents, and the Hebrew words are not rendered at all (Greek is rendered poorly). Tables and diagrams are destroyed beyond all recognition. Apparently, no human reviewed this before submitting it to Amazon. Subsequently, Amazon didn't bother to "look inside" either.If I read this in this format initially, I would not have fully appreciated the books content. Mr. Bullinger did considerable research into this book's content. I'm amazed that he was able to turn out a work of this quality years before the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance was published. It's a magnificent work that was sabotaged in this version!I was hoping to have a digital version as a reference work. However, the lack of links and cross-references eradicate any usefulness in this regard.Stay away from this Kindle version. Even at .99, it's overpriced! Buy the book instead. I wish I had my .99 back! :-(

This book is an absolute must read, and study, for any serious student of the Bible. E.W. Bullinger's work is, in my humble opinion, a brilliant and inspired work. It had a profound effect on me and I believe that if you read it, you will never look at the Bible the same way again. It will open your eyes and mind to the incredible, loving detail that God crafted in His Word. Bullinger will convince anyone sincerely seeking the truth that the Bible is a supernatural work of God and far different than any book written by man. I have given many copies of this book away to those I believe were seeking to know the Lord more intimately, and will continue to do so.

Great reference for looking at prophetic meaning of numbers. When I am curious I look and see what a number could mean and then pay attention while reading the Word to see if I come to the same conclusions they do. It is important to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide your understanding but references like this are good for kick-starting an interest in digging deeper into some of the mysteries hidden in the Word. Everything God wrote was with design and purpose and numbers are important to God and convey spiritual meaning. Understanding the meaning of numbers also helps with biblical dream interpretation.

Read more than a few pages and you will be hooked (if you have an interest in the truth)...what an AMAZING researcher this guy was, and so many years ago. (Read the chapter on the number 3 and I can't imagine you won't be amazed.)

You wont find this information anywhere else. The numerology is very helpful with dream and symbol interpretations as well. Will be my go to book for anything number related.

I ordered this book to help prepare for an upcoming trip to Borneo. It arrived as advertised and on time. The book provides good general information along with listings of places to eat and stay (mostly probably outdated since I ordered a used copy, but that's on me). I'd like more pictures of the flora and fauna and more do's and dont's regarding the culture.

This guide is the most complete one I have seen. It has facts about one of the most remote places on Earth. All of the information is organized logically, and specifics are easy to find.

Just returned from Borneo. Can't go wrong with Lonely Planet!

My 9 and 10 year old absolutely love this series.

Even though I havent read the first 2 installments of this comic, it wasnt hard for me to figure out the plot.I love comics and the artwork in this was was really good. The story line was fast paced and kept you engaged. Now I have to go find the previous installments of this great story!
