Cynthia Gabriel, I hope this becomes a mainstay for every mom. A mom centered resource companion that journeys with her through the postpartum period. It gives women simplistic guidance all in one place.As a postpartum doula and advocate for maternal mental health, this is a must read for EVERY new mom. Realistic expectations and a support system are dire in the fourth trimester for any mom, let alone a new mom. I believe we fail our moms terribly by putting so much emphasis around labor and delivery with little focus on the postpartum period. As the book reads, we need more balance between prenatal care and postpartum support. Our western culture needs to embrace mothers during this crucial time. When a baby is born, so is a mother. I will recommend this book again and again.

I had hoped that this book would give me tips with "how to proceed" now that I have my baby in my arms. But unfortunately, it did not have any information in it that I would consider useful. It was also organized very poorly. Almost nonchalantly. The information was broad and somewhat vague. Really not worth it.

Such a helpful book for the days and months right after baby arrives.

Excellent book!

This book is such a gift to new parents! Cynthia does a wonderful job combining traditional wisdom, science and commonsense recommendation. "The Fourth Trimester Companion" avoids judgement and instead helps families find and feel confident in the best parenting approach for their own baby. She identifies true problems that families might encounter postpartum, but also explores what is normal adjustment after a baby (from sleep to sex — the postpartum sex chapter is especially great!). This book doesn't just rehash the same old advice, but offers a fresh perspective from an experienced mother, anthropologist and doula. As a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, and doula trainer, I'm recommending "The Fourth Trimester Companion" to all of my students, clients and the doulas I train. Get it!

If you are going to have a baby, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! It absolutely saved my life after my first baby came. The amount of practical wisdom and guidance combined with the invitation to really learn to trust myself as a mother was the best form of support I could have imagined! Cynthia is clearly an experienced birth professional who has learned a tremendous amount from her many years of experience, which she generously shares with us in this book. She is quite thorough in her explanation of the different phases a woman naturally experiences postpartum, which made me feel so much more sane and way less alone. She provides so many resources for new moms to get additional support, which is critical during such an intense time. Cynthia describes how to navigate all of the changing relationships post birth – from partners to grandparents to other children, to animals. It’s by far the most thorough and comprehensive book out there on the postpartum period.Honestly, I have reccomendedthis book to everyone I know who is having or just had a baby. About the Author

Perhaps Don Pitcher's love of travel came about because he moved so much as a child; by age 15 he had lived in six states and two dozen East Coast and Midwestern towns. Don's family hails from Maine, but he was born in Atlanta, making him a southerner with New England blood. He moved west for college, receiving a master's degree from the University of California, Berkeley, where his thesis examined wildfires in the high elevation forests of Sequoia National Park. When his first (and only) scientific paper was published, he appeared to be headed into the world of ecological research.Don then landed what seemed like the coolest job on the planet shortly after grad school: being flown around Alaska's massive Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in a helicopter while conducting fire research. Wild places continued to beckon, and over the next 15 years Don built backcountry trails, worked as a wilderness ranger, mapped grizzly bear habitats, and operated salmon weirs—anything to avoid an office job. After that first season in Alaska, he spent three months in the South Pacific, and quickly found himself addicted to travel. A true life saver. This book has a great breakdown of Anchorage and Denali and the Kenai penn. I didn't have a clue as to what to expect or even do with my time before I bought this book. Husband kept on saying "we will figure it out". NO! It doesn't work that way. I wasn't about to spend so much money to travel to Alaska and then spend my free time there on the web reading about what I couldn't afford or could have had. Although the author's price ranges may be a little on the low end, the links in the book were sound and I could get to where I needed on line to print off my own brochures. The book is comprehensive and will be an addendum to trip. I started reading this on my 8" and moved to my laptop for convenience sake. But, I didn't need to. I am so glad I bought the digital version. I'm taking the book with me on my tablet. I hope, I haven't look yet. But, I hope Moon has a great book like this for next year when we visit Arizona.

If u are planning to visit the main summer Alaskan attractions of Denali NP, Seward , Homer, Anchorage this is the book to get. Well written with the touch of a local Alaskan. Gives good details about the attractions on the way to the afore mentioned places. If planning for a typical Alaskan trip for 7-10 days, I found this book to be a better buy than the much acclaimed 'Milepost' book which is better for longer duration vacations covering the entire state and different highways leading to it.

This is a good quality Moon offering with thorough treatment of sights, activities, accommodations and the like. Since I'm going to be in Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula I was mostly interested in how much attention they got, as opposed to Denali, which is not on my agenda. Good news.The first 25 pages are general intro and highlights. Anchorage and near vicinity get 83 pages. Denali clocks in at 56 pages. The rest, 100 pages, is devoted to the Kenai Peninsula. That's great.Whittier and the Portage Glacier area are treated as Anchorage vicinity, even though I think of them as on the Peninsula. From there we follow the Seward highway and get good coverage of Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park. From Seward one generally travels to Homer. This book offers a bit on most of the towns along that route, (Kenai, Kasilof, Clam Gulch), which helps get you oriented and interested. Homer is the primary southern destination and there's a lot of useful info on Homer, (and on the State Park across Kachemak Bay).So, as far as guidebooks to the Kenai Peninsula go this one has much more info than most, even if "Kenai Peninsula" is in smaller letters in the title. A nice find if that's what you need and a great way to become generally familiar with the region.

This is a very thorough and helpful guide. It's helped us decide to make some big changes to our itinerary for our upcoming trip to Alaska and I think our journey will be vastly improved because of it. It's well-written and interesting and there's even some humor in it as well. The guide gives quite a bit of back story information and history for the towns and areas covered as well as everything you need to know for lodging, dining, activities, and nightlife. The only thing I don't like is that the Kindle version has only black and white photos. I'm assuming there are color photos in the print version and, if so, I think the electronic version should have those as well.

We stayed a few days north of Anchorage and then 6 days in the Kenai. The info was always accurate and gave us confidence to get out and explore. Provided helpful info on attractions and vendors for excursion and tours.

Yes, it gives you information on what you need to know before your trip, but I have to use a magnifying glass and reading glass to read the small print. It's light to carry around though. Seller delivered the book on time and as described, thanks.

I used this for a week in Anchorage and backpacking in Denali. Travel recommendations for the train were spot on. The hotel recommendations in Anchorage, I think, are a bit dated - go with on-line recommendations. I'd like to come back and try some of the recommendations for the Kenai Peninsula.

Mr. Pitcher did a fine job presenting the volumes of detail that a travel guide like this entails. I live in Alaska and found this guide true and accurate of the areas I know and useful in learning the areas I wish to visit.

It is a good book. Very detailed of the benefits of the mediation process and outcomes you can expect from the process. Very good book for a student or anyone who desires to understand the mediation process.

It was well worth the time to read this book. The book makes the case for Transformative mediation, and shows how letting go of a strict and strongly held focus on settlements, and control. The mediator can make room for a transformative mediation where the focus is more “client centered” on each participant in the mediation. By “mirroring” their respectives ideas and feelings, they get more clear, and with a more clear view of their own standpoint, they can feel empowered and more safe, which can lead to less defensiveness and sometimes more recognition of the other side's perspective, and flexibility in their actions. That in turn when happens sometimes/often lead to a de escalation of the conflict. And then sometimes settlement.Process oriented mediation.This makes sense to me.What I am still chewing on:Unclear standpoint in the book regarding what client groups can benefit from Transformative mediation.The case is made for no selection regarding what type of clients the method can be applied for.And then the book in one single case points to Transformative mediation is insufficient alone in regard to battered women.My understanding of it from the book that there is a conflict between the naive view of conflict in the ideology behind transformative mediation (everybody have the same humanity/potential for making peace), and violent high conflict cases.The underlying philosophy of the book with the feminine/relational view of human interaction, that fails to ankownlogde human diversity. It stand for a romantic view of human nature that is not in line with evolutionary theory (or the picture the bible paints of humanity after eden), history or everdy life. First thanks for the encouragement to read this book from my Brother-N-Law.I finished reading it after having it in my possession for almost two weeks and what a relief to get through it.Although somewhat dry the real part that was interesting was the “Purple House with Julie, Elizabeth, and Bernice. “Putting Transformative Theory in Practice Parts One and Part two”.The authors have a way of presenting the case and building on the information that is ultimately connected with chapters 4 and 5 so that you understand the gist of the book.For me also knowing the various theories such as Carol Gilliam (Feminist) in what I learned from other course that I’ve taken was important. Bottom line is you need trust, and you have to allow yourself to stay neutral in transformative approach to conflict.What I found was that I was hoping that some of what I read would transition itself into training on conflict resolution and that this book will help facilitate my learning experience.Unfortunately, I did not; however being neutral is a key component that I have taken away into conflict resolution.

A stunning story about the Cold War that actually began before the end of WWII.USAAF forces, in support of the Red Army advance westward into Poland and Germany, began using "shuttle" missions by their B-24 and B-17 bombers- launch from bases in Britain, France and Italy, strike targets in the eastern areas of the Reich, and continue on to Red Army held territory (as they did not have the range to return to their bases). There, they would re-fuel and re-arm, and strike targets on their way back.Naturally, a number of aircraft were forced to crash-land in territory held by the Soviets, and the USAAF was anxious to get their planes and crews back- and they applied for permission to recover said aircraft.Enter Captain Robert Trimble, newly minted member of the "Lucky Bastards Club", the select few who had managed to complete the required 35 missions over enemy territory before being rotated home. Trimble was called to his CO's office and offered a choice- go home for a three week leave, and then possibly be re-assigned to a new set of combat missions (maybe in the Pacific), or agree to a "safer" aircraft recovery mission in the Eastern European Theater with the willing help of the Communists. Trimble's experience of combat missions flying both B-17s AND B-24s gave him a rather unique set of qualifications- and he was rated one of his squadron's best officers, as well.He began to notice odd things as he began to train for his new mission, not the least of which was the involvement of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). He was to discover that his mission was not only to recover downed US aircraft, he was also to try to repatriate Axis held POWs who had been "liberated" by the Russians. Aircrews who had managed to evade capture by the Germans were treated as heroes by the Reds, but those taken prisoner were considered to be cowards, and abandoned after the POW camps were captured.The Russians performed mass executions of their own people who had been captured by the Nazis, and actively interfered with attempts by the Western Allies to recover theirs. Trimble's assignment was to outfox the Soviets and bring our people home, and in the process freed many more- other allied military, and hundreds of slave workers transported from their native countries to perform duties in the Nazi labor camps.This story is much more than the recollections of one man- it is meticulously researched- many military archives were investigated, and all of Trimble's verifiable details have proven accurate.It is a tale of derring-do, of the nasty politics at work between the "Allies", outright lies, deceits, and obstruction on the part of "Uncle Joe" Stalin, and the bravery and ingenuity of American and other freedom-minded people in a terrible time and place.I cannot recommend this book highly enough- five stars seems inadequate- this story must be known. It screams out for a legitimate historical movie or mini-series ala "Band of Brothers".One more note: I have been a fan of the movie "Patton", starring George C. Scott, for many years. This book illustrates a major failing of that tale. There is a point in the movie where Patton laments his inability to start a new war with the Russians to his friend Omar Bradley, and it is treated as a humorous, insane side-note to General Patton's career. It turns out that General Patton knew full well about the treatment of American POWs in Soviet held territory- treatment that would have been considered an act of war under any other circumstances. See also Bill O'Reilly's book, "Killing Patton".

I was born in October,1945 and as such consider myself "one lucky bastard" in that freedom was my first gift after life itself. After a 20 plus career with the NYPD, I have spent the last 28 years teaching fifth grade, and you better believe that I will introduce my students to the heroic exploits of Capt. Robert Tillman. His story has strengthened my own idea of the greatness of that generation, and of the men and women who suffered in so many countries throughout the world. My own daughter-in-law's grandfather "opened up" about the European theater in my classroom, but informed the students that he could not talk about his liberation of an "unnamed" camp, In closing, I was riveted by Capt. Trimble's story and could feel his fear, anguish, and frustration during those "4" months in hell. I found it particularly ironic that I began the book 70 years to the day in February, 1945 as his journey was initiated.This is a must read for all citizens, who think that they have something to complain about!George M.

2nd book I've read recently by a child of someone who served in WW2 and wanted to tell their parent's story. Well done!Reading how that bastard Stalin and the evil empire, treated Poland, American POWs, and even their own people raised my blood pressure. And how we, the USA, felt it necessary to appease those bastards.People like Captain Trimble and so many others from all countries fought (and continue to fight) to do right by people, to treat them humanely, and to deliver some hope to this world.I applaud the guts and heart of Captain Trimble and the effort and skill of his son in telling his story.

This is a story in the Second World War that needed to be told. We were told that the Russians were our "Allies" during WWII in the fight against the Axis Powers. Alas, it wasn't true. This is the accounting of a man that was tricked into thinking he was just going to be picking up broken airplanes and he not only did what was actually requested of him but went above and beyond. We are so fortunate to live in the time of peace that we do, for the men and women who fought in the Second World War they didn't have this luxury, evil and conceit was ever present and this Airman saw through it all. I was haunted by the account of the P51 pilot who to this day lays in an unmarked grave killed by Russians so they could steal his airplane to study the technology. With the story of that loss comes also many successful missions that saved hundreds of people from certain death.

This is a part of WW2 I had no idea ever took place! Well written and very interesting. A must have for WW2 buffs. Makes you wonder if the Russians really were on our side or not. What a bunch of paranoid jack asses. I guess life was pretty cheap for the commies back then. The hardships suffered by so many in Eastern Europe is beyond imagination. Some very brave American Airmen did all they could to rescue downed American pilots. A must read and I really enjoyed it.

This book tells a haunting and dramatic real life story that will stay with me a long time. It gives at least a small idea of what it was like to be Capt. Trimble, caught between the human suffering on the eastern front (as the Nazi's withdrew and the Soviets advanced) and the big power politics that hindered every effort to relieve that suffering next to impossible. My only slight complaint is that the writing seems to me to be a little melodramatic, when just the facts are enough to move the reader. Still, I recommend this book, both for history buffs and for anyone who wants a glimpse of the realities of the tradgedy of the countless POWs, civilians and concentration camp survivors, displaced by WWII.

First let me say that this is the third copy of th I s book I have purchased! I have read it multiple times. Ms Gordon tells the story of her daughter's life with the same courage, humor, and love as her daughter Christine lived by! I applaud her honest, beautiful story of a life lived to the fullest, even when facing chronic illness and a sadly shortened life. I love this book and I highly recommend it.

I was saddened to read about Christines struggle and eventual death of cystic fibrosis. This book does a great job of showing you the decline, and we watch as her lungs deteriorate until there is no quality of life left. It was awful because she loved life so much and knew what was happening to her and what she was missing out on.Some things bugged me-like her mother seemingly putting her love life ahead of Christine, and vacationing when Christine was dying in a hospital room...but it doesn't keep me from recommending the book because I loved Christine. I'm sad to see it is now out of print.Christine's beauty and strength really shined through. I wonder what her mom and sister are doing now.

I remember I had to write a book report on a biography. Until then I had only read fantasies and science fiction. I thought at the time this was going to be one of the hardest and most boring assignments of my high school years. Most of the kids in my class were grabbing up all of the celebrity books they could find. I had no idea who I wanted to read about. I found this book and read about how she was the daughter of Muppet puppeteer Jerry Nelson. I was a fan of the show and figured it could be worst. But as I read this book I was taken on a fabulous journey of this inspiring and courageous girl. She had Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that kills most of its victims by 15. Knowing this she still looked to the future with wide eyed enthusiasm. She dreamed of being an actress and even got small part in the Great Muppet Caper. A movie I rented just to hear her voice. Her mother was also a tower of strength and I was amazed she could write so eloquently about something that was breaking her heart. For the first time I actually cried after reading a book. For I really felt I came to know this girl and wished I could have known her and become friends. Trust me this book is that good. After finishing the book I actually bought a copy, another first for me buying something I already read. Well I was recently cleaning up some old books and came across this one and I really thing that if you can find a copy of this book your are in for an amazing and yet ultimately sad tale.

I first read this book when I was in 5th grade and fell in love with it the first time I read it. Since then, I have read this book several times and it is one of my favorite books because there is so much one can learn from the lives of the people in the book, especially from Christine, a girl who has cystic fibrosis. What makes me read it time after time and keeps my attention is the strength and courage of one family and especially Christine. It is so encouraging when you can read someone's story like the one in Give Me one Wish and know that she was able to keep such a positive attitude and not let her illness "get the best of her". The lessons that can be learned from this book will stay with you for the rest of your life and so will the impact of this book. The person that wrote the book was Christine's mom and the story she tells from the journal entries of Christine's to evoking the emotions that Christine had are amazing. This is both an incredibly inspiring book and an incredibly sad book. It makes me cry every time I read it. All I can say is, incredible.

This is the true tale you bring out when your teen is complaining about not being able to go shopping, etc. Christine would do anything to live without Cystic Fibrosis. She does her best to live her dreams and we see her courage through her struggle come to life on the pages. What a wonderful tribute Jacquie Gordon wrote for her daughter. I can't even begin to describe what an impact this book has had on me. I read it for the first time in 6th grade, and since then my entire frame of mind has changed. I've found that I really love things like Monty Python, 80s punk rock, the Muppets, and so much more. So it (this book) has changed me a lot in that way, but it also is such an inspiration because of the fact that Christine never really let her cystic fibrosis pull her down into the dumps. She had "spunk and a spirit" for life, and that in itself is something to admire. In the dozens of times that I've read my copy of this incredible story, I've laughed, I've cried, and I've felt like I can actually identify with Chris...she was a regular girl who just happened to have a fatal disease. Her mom (Jaquie Gordon, the author) caputured Chris's life in such an amazing way, and I wish I could thank her for being so willing to write about it and changing my outlook on life.

I have read this book so many times that I had to buy a second copy-I now own the hardcover and softcover editions! I felt a 'kinship' with Christine from the very first page---we shared the same first name, was born around the same time, loved the same music and I was very familiar with the places Jacquie Gordon wrote about in this wonderful book. For anyone who grew up in the seventies this book will ring a familiar bell.You read of struggles, illness,but most of all you learn that Christine LIVED! Christine rung every ounce she could out of life and she certainly grasped the brass ring! She is a true inspiration to us all! This book brought a richness to my life and I thank Mrs. Gordon for sharing such a wonderful tribute. Christine (in her stardust) must still be singing!
