The Beautiful Butterfly: A Folktale from Spain, by Judy Sierra

From Publishers Weekly

The team behind Good Night, Dinosaurs here grants a happy ending to the tale of a heroine whose search for a mate traditionally ends with his death. In Sierra's comical version, a beguiling butterfly tests her suitors by asking them to sing. She listens patiently as the cricket "clicks," the frog "croo-ahs," and with a determined flick of her Spanish fan, she chooses the song of a gray mouse. But while the newlywed fellow fetches some pond water, a fish leaps up and swallows him. Sierra uses a repeated "The House That Jack Built" refrain to convey the ripple effect of the butterfly's sorrow ("The dove calls coo coo, and the tree drops its leaves," etc.) until the king enters and announces, "To show how sad I am, I will take off my robe and run around in my royal underwear." The fish laughs so hard at the king in his skivvies that he spits up the whiskered groom. Chess demonstrates the happily-ever-after conclusion with a family portrait of three "buttermice" (with mouse bodies, antennae and wings to match their mom's) playing jump rope and swinging from the branches of their hollow tree home. Sierra fills her cleverly and economically told tale with repeated phrases and sounds that trip off the tongue, while Chess's droll watercolors provide just the right amount of tartness for the sweet text. From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-In this melding of two classic Spanish folktales, an alluring butterfly turns down a number of suitors before choosing a gentle mouse because his soft, sweet song is absolutely perfect for singing babies to sleep. Just when it looks as though they will live happily ever after, Mouse falls in a pond and is swallowed by a fish. The grief-stricken butterfly cries up a storm, which sets in motion a chain of events resulting in her beloved's regurgitation and a happy ending. The story makes good use of repetition to build to the climax, and the plot is intriguing. Chess's signature illustrations are full of bright color, pizzazz, and humor. Her insects' and animals' faces run through a gamut of expressions, from pleased to appalled, and there are many details to look at and enjoy. This is a good addition to the canon of such animal-wooing stories as John Langstaff's retelling of Frog Went A'-Courtin' (Harcourt, 1955) and classic animal death tales like William Stobbs's Who Killed Cock Robin? (Oxford, 1990).Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

We checked this book out from our local library and my 6 year old son absolutely loves it. The pictures are quirky and the colors are fabulous! He keeps going back to the book to look at it and we have read it quite a few times just in the two days we've had it. What a great little book, I am so glad I noticed it on the shelf!

I read this book to all of my kids, but my daughter liked it better than my boys did. It's a corky, cute little tale, about a butterfly who thinks her beloved mouse friend has been eaten by a fish. Out of this comes a story that follows the same format as "There was an old lady who swallowed a Fly." This happened, then this happened, then this, etc. It's a zany little book, especially at the end. It has a happy ending. There are 26 actual pages, not counting the cover page and dedication page. There are 5 pages of full color illustrations included in the 26 pages. The illustrations are bright and lively. It's probably 1st grade level, maybe second. Young children who hear the book several times will be telling this story, I'm sure. I'm also sure they'll want to hear it again.

WHEN YOU OPEN THIS EXTRAORDINARY CHILDREN'S BOOK THE COLORS IN THE BOOK WILL TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY WHAT BEAUTY WHAT LIFE. THE BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY IS A STORY ABOUT LIFE, FRIENDS, AND LOVE, BUT TOLD ON A LEVEL ANY CHILD WOULD UNDERSTAND. I BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR MY FRIENDS NEW BABY GIRL. BUT FIRST I HAD TO READ AND READ AGAIN THIS WONDERFUL BOOK THAT WISHED ME BACK TO CHILDHOOD WHERE ALL DREAMS DO COME TRUE.

So far so good.- Good char development- Great artwork- Good start to the story- Humor =)- Left with the need for more but have to wait for the next Volume 2 months away ; ;

Gamer meets monsters, no intercourse but busty

Thought I was getting the light novel but got the manga instead this will hold me over until the white novel gets released in English still great series though.

I know I am a huge of isekie already so I am biased. This was a good start, can't wait to read the rest of the series.

An interesting story. A story about a man that played video games till he is summoned into another world.

I was happy to get it because I want to read this manga thx to the anime based on it.

character development was very good. it worked out well for the another world genre. I love how they used a demon lord instead of a hero. I will definitely be supporting this series.

Muy recomendable. La serie es brutal y muy cómica. Tiene una combinación entre comedia, acción, romance, aventura, misterio, magia y más.

I would have liked to have given this book five stars, but it needs some editing for grammatical errors and downright mistakes. Did you know that one of the persons mentioned in the book could not get a shot off because the safety on his revolver stuck? Yeah, that's right, revolvers do not have safeties. In another place the author talks about two players in Vegas. First he identifies them as two separate persons and then he says they are the same person known by two names in different places then he says that one of them hired the other in Vegas. Huh? He also often uses past and present tense in the same sentence. If you can overlook these not too frequent errors you will enjoy this overview of Vegas and the Mob.

Not the best writing I must say. Poorly edited. But Al Moe seems to know his stuff. I lived in Vegas as a kid in the fifties and sixties. I got info on a hotel that was burned out (mob arson) and not rebuilt for the longest time. Hard to know what is reality and what is mob lore, nonetheless, this is a fun book if you like this kind of stuff. Sort of a vintage Sopranos without really getting into character. That said, believe more of these "facts" than you are inclined to. Not sure if Las Vegas is all that improved for the lack of the enforcers. Seems like Las Vegas is now all glitter with the sleaze not that far under the surface. As a kid we used to ride across town on our bikes without worries about our safety. The corporations have seemed to remove a lot of the fun from the city. Everything costs a fortune now. I suppose the mob was worse.

If you ever wondered just who put the Sin into Sin City, this is the book for you. This book names all the players, and chronicles not only what they did, but what they did to each other. There are the big well-known gangsters who rose up through the New York, Chicago and West Coast crime syndicates, as well as the lesser lights, the hangers on, the greedy grifters, the show business hucksters, the crooked politicians and Federal agents, the shyster lawyers, the colorful and enigmatic personalities, and the small time hoods and con men who came looking for power and money but who usually ended up in shallow unmarked graves far from the lights of Las Vegas.Al W Moe has done an admirable job of researching the roots of Vegas and the role played by the Mob over the decades, as well as connecting the dots between people and events. If there was one thing I tool away from this book is that Mob rule was bad for business. The lords of Vegas hurt their own products by massive skimming of profits, poor accounting procedures, and the need to lay out huge sums of money to stay in business and out of jail, both in the form of attorney fees and bribes to every greedy government minion, from the local councilman to US Congressmen and FBI agents; they didn't have to bribe J Edgar Hoover, just show him a picture of his boyfriend in a compromising situation. It was not until the Mob was pushed out of Vegas, when the owners became millionaires and corporations with good practices that the casinos finally broke out of their forty-five-year death spiral; the casinos still go through the cycles of boom and bust, but now they are the result of economic pressures and nor gang warfare.Anyone who has stayed in Vegas since the 1940's will finds information and anecdotes about their favorite casinos. Mine was the Sahara, one of the greatest of the mid-century glamour casinos and the last of them to fall. But there are also stories about the Sands, the Aladdin and others that faded away before most of us were old enough to gamble or drink. While the book is excellent reading for the nostalgic, it's also a trove of information for historians, especially those interested in crime and society.

Interesting book. Too short really. Never got into the real characters behind the faces. Informative though and pretty enjoyable but could have been so much more.

Well, hard to review this book. A portion of it was quite informative. The chapter on Howard Hughes was very good. However, for the most part it skipped around. You read a paragraph and then the next paragraph was discussing a different person with no real connection. I do know more about Las Vegas history than I did so that is a plus. Other than the Howard Hughes chapter it was quite difficult to follow. I guess it was worth $1.05

This book was a good overview of the formation and growth of the city we all know as Las Vegas. It offers more than the usual mob characters and shows the influence of many others. It also skillfully shows how the mob influence gave way to the corporations which now own many or most of the casinos. The author tosses in some sarcasm now and then throughout the book which I liked, but some might not enjoy it. The book was well worth the time to read it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gave insight into how the mob acquired the casinos and power in Vegas and it tells the story of the beginning of Vegas and the acquisition of the mob and it how the mob controlled Vegas for 40 years and then fizzled out. There is a lot of information about the famous people that went to the casinos and how the mob played a role murders and raked into unaccounted millions of unreported income to fund crimes from drugs to prostitution.

A fun book to read with lots of info on the gangsters and how they brought Las Vegas to where it is today. The book is a bit frantic and goes from subject to subject rather quickly. People that are killed off are all of a sudden back in the next chapter. A little more of a flow would help, but I learned a lot and have a better appreciation of Vegas. There was obviously a lot of research done to bring this story to life.

Review

“This work is very well-written, concise, and would work well for a world history course. Its chapters have significant links to major themes in world history that an instructor can use as 'teaching moments.' “                 -Robert Bond, San Diego Mesa College   “A superb biography of Gandhi that follows his thoughts and actions and leaves us with good questions for how nonviolence might still be applicable in our day.”                 -Rick Warner, Wabash College   “This book has the potential to respond to many of the challenges faced by my students. The subject is inherently interesting, and the narrative of Gandhi's life connects to many significant themes of twentieth-century world history.”                 -Gregory Crider, Winthrop University

This review pertains ONLY to the kindle edition. This is cheap but very defective! NO ILLUSTRATIONS. The notes are not linked from the text, and in the Notes section, the numbers are omitted. So figuring out which note goes with which part of the text is your challenge.

I generally love this type of non-fiction... anecdotes, quirky information, etc. I even really liked this same author's book on "Jewels". Unfortunately this book had too much speculation posed as fact as well as the author's actions chronicled -- and many of the actions made me question her common sense. Examples: In the chapter on Ochre she went to a library where she was supposed to call to have the reference material brought out. She states she left without calling because they were "secret"... "and had been put into the safekeeping of the museum, for whenever Aboriginal elders or scholars want to consult them. It wasn't right for me to even try to see them, I decided." (Is she not a scholar? And why put us through the description of the library for no payoff?) In the chapter on red, when she visits a mine she stirs a pool of mercury with her bare hands (She tells us she had to take off her rings because they would melt...). In the chapter on orange, she speculates about Martinengo's (Stradivarius' mentor) journey from Spain to Cremona and how he might have traveled here or there seeing the various markets and spices. I realize this was a way to showcase possible ingredients used in the varnish BUT without a careful read it comes across as fact. For all I know, the fellow traveled straight to Cremona and had a cousin in the spice trade.... The point is, she presents speculation as fact. (And really, she tried staining wood with stale urine?)

This book was okay - not great, but not boring either. I thought this would be a history of the different colors but it was more a travelogue with historical snippets thrown in. I just noticed on looking it up on Amazon that the British version of this is subtitled Travels through the Paintbox, whereas the American version is subtitled A Natural History of the Palette. Unsure why they changed that when it crossed the pond, as the UK version more clearly states what the book is about. I found the historical elements to be far more interesting and wish that the book had been more about that - those were the parts of the chapters I was always more intrigued by. As an artist myself, I am interested in learning as much about art history as I can.Whenever the author switched to talking about her travels and tourist activities (because they did not read as serious research trips ever - has this woman ever used the internet to research her destinations or even called any people in the country she's going to ahead of time?!). She mentioned using out of date travel books and used travel info from 10 years prior at one point to guide her travels. It just felt...shoddy for what was purported to be scholarly, research trips.I was a bit put off by some of the dumb things she did in the name of "researching" her book - she traveled to Afghanistan right after 9/11, completely refusing to heed well-earned warnings about traveling there. She somehow managed to finagle a visa meant for people working with NGOs in the region at the time, which to me just came across as immature and really selfish. As a reader, I could care less about how much she had to hike to get to a lapus lazuli mine or how she supposedly charmed the mine workers as the only white woman they'd seen. That literally had nothing to do with the history of the color blue that the chapter was supposed to be about. Anytime her writing veered into her recounting her travels it just felt self-indulgent and more like a diary ("Dear Diary, I couldn't find any coffee this morning because the whole country was in mourning over the just deceased leader. I couldn't go to the place I wanted and it was so annoying."). I was also taken aback by some of her glaring ignorance (you didn't bother to look up what an indigo plant looked like before you left to try to see one in India?) and just silly musings - it read sometimes like I was reading something by a teenager rather than an supposedly educated adult. At one point, she's trying to "outwit" some guards at an archaeological site to get a look at some ancient dying vats by pretending to "look dreamily out at the ocean" and then running over old columns when they looked the other way. If that is what you traveled so far to see, why wouldn't you call ahead and get access with a guide to a part that is usually not accessible to the general public? There was time after time mentioned where she showed up to a place and then was surprised by not being able to get in or not being able to see what she wanted or she'd arrived just before closing time.I'm giving this 3 stars as the historical information was actually really good and very interesting, and I liked all the extra information in the extensive notes in the back. If she had just stuck to the history, I would have enjoyed this a lot more. All the stories and actual historical info kept me intrigued, but the book always lagged as soon as she started talking about all the details of her travels.

I love art history books but am aware that many have better use, curing insomnia. Although this book was more and two hundred pages, it was a wonderful, well researched, attention grabbing narrative about the history of color, the difference between pigment and dye , the search for "forgotten" recipes and human sentiment around the globe to color. Even the epilogue and bibliography are useful and easy to follow.

The kindle version of this book -- allegedly about the world's dazzling colors -- is in BLACK & WHITE!!!! Desperately trying to get my money back.

A history of many famous dyes and pigments, as you'd expect. The individual stories are organized by dye and often involve the author's personal trips to places like Afghanistan, just in time to experience the weird period when the Taliban tolerated outsiders and hadn't yet made the news for destroying ancient statues. I found the storytelling a little disjointed sometimes, and the author even admits having felt pressured to write herself into the book to make it into a narrative. Still, the book is pretty interesting and entertaining. The interspersed narrative isn't all bad, either; I liked reading for instance about modern dye-makers trying to recreate ancient favorites like Tyrian purple and cochineal red, and the industrial processes behind them. There's also definitely a fiction story to be told in the adventures of some of the people Finlay talks about, like the adventurer who risked death to steal some beetle-infested cactus chunks. I like reading about the development of technologies and how those interact with the larger historical picture, and this book provides that kind of info. Even little details like the story of Napoleon's arsenic-green wallpaper help make this book worthwhile.

Sports Ethics: An Anthology

Review

‘Sports Ethics is a cleverly compiled anthology that clearly addresses the main issues facing sport today. Previously published classical arguments by highly respected sport philosophers are augmented by ten new articles written specifically for this anthology. This is topical, well organized and insightful – an excellent addition to the literature.’ John M. Charles, The College of William and Mary ‘The selections in this volume give a powerful statement of the common practices in sport which negate the values that sport is supposed to instill: justice, respect, responsibility, and honesty. In addition, Dean Smith's foreword offers a thoughtful, pragmatic point of view which often is lost in theoretical work.’ Sharon Kay Stoll, University of Idaho

Was interested in this until I read the comments. $44 for a compilation of other writers work put together by someone embroiled in a cheating scandal. Ironic. And not in an Alannis Morrisett kind of way.

This collection of essays from over 30 nationally significant authors looks at sports and ethics in depth, and is a serious effort. Broad topics include Sport and Education, Sport and Sportspersonship, Sport and Competition, Sport and Drugs, Sport and Violence, Sport and Gender, Sport and Racial Issues, and Sport and Role Models. For those who love or hate sport, this book will add insight as to why.

Very insightful and an outstanding analysis of a complex topic. A must read for anyone with any interest on this issue. Jan is probably the leading authority on this topic.

Ignore hit-and-run attacks from NC State representatives. They never even read the book but still cannot refrain from trying to disparage the University of North Carolina.

I will admit that I haven't read this book, and have no idea if it is any good. However, there is an organized attack on it on the NC State message boards, and the 1 star reviews below are part of that attack. Totally unconscionable.

Pathetic that grown people would attempt to tear down an EDITOR of a book based on their bias due to ATHLETIC and INSTITUTIONAL inferiority that has continued since time immemorial. You can look at these reviews and get a picture of the sad and desperate nature of the NC state fan base, who will stop at nothing to tear down anything even remotely related to UNC, while their own school of choice is an afterthought at best. Turn off the computer and spend some time with your families. Or read this book and learn something.

This book is printed on high quality paper, the publisher took great care in selecting all of the fonts used, and the great majority of the words are spelled correctly. There is no truth to the rumor that if you buy this book at full price, it comes with a diploma inside.

How refreshing to learn about ethics from a woman who organized a phony department at her university in order to keep athletes eligible. One that conducted no-show classes, held "independent studies" in which no work was done, and fabricated grade changes on legitimate classes. Then instructed her colleagues to change the wording of an internal investigation (which was a sham in itself) so as not to rouse further suspicion from the NCAA.It is fitting that the cover features an athlete tripping over their own feet. UNC has tangled itself into a web of attempted misdirection and lies - first claiming that the AFAM scandal is academic rather than athletic in order to protect its beloved banners, then realizing it has obliterated whatever credibility it might have had as a place of higher learning. This book should be categorized under fiction. When I'm done reading, I'll start on "Financial Planning 101," written by Bernie Madoff.
