Stephanie Nolen is the Africa Bureau Chief for the Globe and Mail, and one of only three journalists in the world dedicated to the AIDS story. She has reported from more than 40 countries around the world, and has won Canada's National Newspaper Award for International Reporting two years in a row. She was the recipient of the 2003, 2004, and 2006 Amnesty International Award for Human Rights Reporting, for reports from war zones in Uganda and Sudan, and also won the Markwell Award of the International Society of Political Psychology. It sounds weird to say it, but I couldn't put this book down. All the stories are so compelling and so well-written. Nolen doesn't tell one story over and over, but tells many stories using very diverse people. Her courage is obvious: she hung out with a long-haul trucker, a sex worker, and people with AIDS who had only days left to live. I was especially intrigued by the stories of the infected ones who became powerful advocates. What this book left me with wasn't the sense that "these people are pathetic victims we richer folk need to help," but that these are resilient, strong, interesting human beings suffering a horrid situation with little or no resources, and we should help them help themselves. As a journalist, I'm in awe of Stephanie Nolen in every respect. As a reader, I'm compelled to respond. I highly recommend the related website, [...], where you can read about each of the 28 briefly, and see a video interview of several. The website and book both give many ideas for how you can help. Start by reading a book that could change your life.

I bought this book after hearing an interview with the author on NPR. Then it rested on a pile of books to read for over a year. It didn't seem like the type of book you want to take to the beach or vacation. Or a book to read and put yourself to sleep at night. Then I started to read it one day after hearing of relief work in Africa from a friend. I read several of the profiles/stories. I kept thinking, ok, she has put the most dramatic ones in the front of the book. They can't be that much different after a few. And I was proven wrong. Every story was unique. They are unique from so many different perspectives. Yet they all have the common theme and sensitivity brought to the reader by a very skilled and aware reporter. Nolen doesn't just drop in on someone and do a quick interview. She wraps many dimensions around each story--human, family, love, economic, political, education and so much more. I encourage interested readers to look at the other reviews. Then buy the book. But don't wait to read it.

I haven't read this book yet, it arrived today, but, I am aware of the epidemic of HIV in Africa, it's not 28, it's over 28 million, I buy hand crafted jewelry made by HIV + women in Africa, it's beautiful , inexpensive and I git it when ever I can.

I have spent somewhat extensive time in both East and West Africa and I feel that this book not only portrays the way AIDs is stigmatized but also how little some groups actually understand AIDs. After reading 28, I have a changed perspective on AIDs around the world both through how I act when I am abroad and how I talk to people in the US about it.

interesting but out of date

Nice montage of stories. Being from South Africa, I was hoping for more local stories--I just read the ones from RSA first and then picked and chose the others.

I read this book in preparation for a mission trip to South Africa to work with Aids orphans. The book did a great job of telling the stories of various victims of Aids without judging or exonerating. My eyes were opened to the magnitude of suffering and gave me a better understanding of the individual and societal problems that we may encounter.

Oh, the artwork, oh, the powerful messaging, oh, the informative Author’s note ….oh, how I love everything about this book!MARY WEARS WHAT SHE WANTS shares the story of a young girl who shocked society by trading in her uncomfortable dress for a pair of pants. Despite the jeers from the townspeople, she continued to wear what she liked paving the way for other girls to have a choice in their own clothing.There are so many incredible details in this book that make it a real standout!

2019 is already beginning with some pretty amazing picture book biographies. Mary Wears Want She Wants is one of them. Well written, entertaining and with some eye popping, creative and beautiful illustrations. I love it!

Wonderful message and yet so simple. As a teacher you could use it with inferencing and questioning. I'm buying a second copy for my daughter.

I heard the author interviewed and immediately wanted to find this book. It's as wonderful as I thought. Not only are the illustrations bright and kid friendly, they show the silliness of what some people wore in an earlier era and these people are upset because a girl is wearing pants! What a great message for all kids that show how some social conventions are just plain silly and that even if things get tough, it's important to stand up for your rights. But the book is not heavy handed. It's spot-on and completely relateable for kids and adults.

I knew when I received this book I'd enjoy the photos - I follow Chris Jackson in Instagram & see his photos in newspapers. What I didn't expect was the up close and personal photos that it would contain. Broken down into 9 themed chapters, the photos are less journalistic (i.e. what Getty Images can sell to newspapers) & more creative - Chris uses his craft as a PHOTOGRAPHER to show photos you'd expect to see in a gallery (a shot of Prince Charles' shoe replacing a divot; a close-up detail of Her Majesty's coat). There are wonderful portraits of members of the family (Her Majesty; Prince George on his first day of school; Duchess of Cambridge in Canada). I loved every page.

While this book provides a nice glimpse into the British Royal Family, the primary focus is placed on the central members of the Royal Family. The book lacks photos of the Princess Royal, Duke of York, Earl of Wessex, and their families. Additionally, the Queen’s cousins are left out almost entirely. An equal portrayal of all should be provided.

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my Mother, and once it arrived I couldn't help but unwrap it and look inside! I absolutely love Chris Jackson's work, so I knew this collection of photos would be lovely! But I was blown away by how wonderful this book actually was! Chris' access to the Royal Family is so personal and intimate, that his photos actually make you feel as though you are getting an insider's perspective into the life of this family. Some of the photos I was familiar with, and others were new - but every single image was just beautiful! And the captions to go along with each photo brought a whole new element to each picture. My mother will absolutely cherish this book - and I will be ordering my own copy now as well. Chris, you are so talented, and this work of art you have put out is just stunning! Well done!! I'm hoping this won't be the only book you release!

If you follow the British royal family you have definitely seen Chris's work over the years. His photography is gorgeous and this book compiles some of his favorite photos. The text provides an interesting insight into what it's like to witness these historic events up close. There are some photos I've never seen before so even the most seasoned royal watchers will get some nice surprises. It's a gorgeous coffee table book and an absolute must-buy for any fan of the royal family!

The book needs better support maps.There is a map at the beginning of multiple routes BUT under each route the reader only gets written directions to the location the author will write about in that section. I think if the author would have invested more effort in map illustration it would to allow the reader to better visualize where these places are located in the back roads of Texas as the author describes them. The map at the beginning is good for getting an overall visual of how far the different routes are from each other however it would have been nice to have a page dedicated to illustrating the route. So be ready to flip back and forth a lot in order to match the written directions for a route with the one map at the beginning of each "Part" (There is a total of 7 parts.) I looked at another book created by this author and a reviewer had a similar criticism regarding map illustration.Now I will say this the author does point out a handful of locations that may peak your interest! For example, the Canadian River Wagon bridge on pg 45 of the book. However, the reader is stuck with creating his/her own map in order to find the bridge. :-(Creating, writing, and publishing a book is a daunting task and I give the author multiple thumbs up for going through this process! However, always try to improve your product regardless of how many stars your friends may give you...I wish the authors much success on the next book. Hopefully map illustrations will be improved on the next project...

I live in the Great State of Texas, and this book gave me some interesting afternoon road trip ideas. Whenever I travel out of state I like to get books like this about the area I plan to be in. One book about the well known points of interest, but also another book about the lesser known ones along the outskirts. This Texas book is good for those back road trips.

Looking for more of a backroads book and is more about regions. Great pictures but felt was not what I was looking for need a better explanation at sale.

This is a great book for those who want to explore areas of Texas not reached by the main Interstate systems. After I read my copy I bought others for my Texas children.

The book was a gift for my husband who doesn't enjoy reading. But this book he loves, he reads a bit everyday, he can't put it down. Five Stars!

It was given as a gift to a Chinese friend so that she'd remember her year-long stay in Texas, and it was appreciated.

I just wished you send the planner in a box because the corners were dented from being tossed or dropped from the delivery worker. Other than that, I like the planner. I like the fact that it has breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack columns. O plan for other than dinner about 2 -3 times a week. I love that about the planner. However, after using it I think a spiral bound planner would be best for me. I also don't think I like it in a hard cover case either. It is a production to open it. Yes, I can take the planner out but I wanted the note pad part of the planner. I was looking for that feature.

I was looking for a way to keep a food log to help me better understand my diet/allergies while I improve some health issues. I knew that I had to carry it around with me and didn't want something that looked very clinical. This was the perfect solution. This is one of the few "meal planners" that allows you to not only to keep records of what you ate or plan to eat for the week.Most importantly, it is also the only food related planner that I have found that does not make reference to exercise or the gym, making it the perfect solution for anyone, with any lifestyle.The pages are well thought out and well organized with a simple division of meals vs snacks and a grid of each day including the weekend. The lemons and bright colors are a beautiful and a positive design. The planner includes a market list tear off pad which can be very useful especially when planning meals in advance or making sure to add things that you may have eaten the last of. Both the pad and the meal planner notebook are both detachable from a very well constructed small portfolio/binder.This planner is a perfect wellness/self care gift to yourself or a friend!

Jeanine’s “Love and Lemons” cookbook is a must-have for anyone who is a vegetarian or looking to enhance their recipe roster with less meat. It only makes sense to have a meal planning workbook to pair with it. The meal record not only helps make recipe planning easier, it brings the owner joy in getting excited about planning delicious meals during any given time.

For the price, I would love to have some more pages to log. Design-wise, it's simply the best.

I love the format which I have not seen in any other book in programming where the left page of the open book is dedicated to talk about the right page, which is an actual practical piece of code. This has the benefit of having an explanation one page long at the most, with its corresponding practice of the right page.When I started programming in 1984, C Language was a new entry in the PC World. I remember reading a comment on C by the editor of PC Magazine. He said something like this: This new language is so concise, so simple, yet powerful enough to write operating systems like Unix, that even if other languages comes along in the future, probably it will be kept to teach logic and programming principles. I was captivated by this comment and decided to embrace and change the GWBasic that came with the computer for C. Several years later came C++ but it was hard to grasp. A new paradigm is always difficult and the books that started appearing usually did not make a good job explaining the newcomer. C++ had so many quirks and in many ways it lost the C language original simplicity and conciseness.However, C++ managed to become, perhaps the most powerful language, in many respects, responsible for the modern powerful applications that exploit the object-oriented paradigm. Even thou I retired several years ago, C++ remained a challenge for me. So, I bought the book this year (2019) to start all over and I was pleased to discover that C++ is becoming simpler, with a powerful Standard Library which make convoluted constructions in C easy to code in C++. Many of its rough corners have been addressed.Murach's book did an excellent job explaining the new C++, using simple yet meaningful code examples that make C++ the new concise, meaningful and powerful language which made C the grand father of all modern programming languages. It is such a good book that, when the explanation of the left side left obscure points, just typing and compiling the source code helped a lot to understand key concepts. After two months, I am succesfully finishing it with a better understanding and appreciation of the latest C++.I highly recommend it.

This is an excellent addition to programmer's library. I don't agree that all Murach books are gold, but this happens to be one. There are a few typos and bugs, but the only thing I would add would be bracket initialization which is curiously missing for a book released in 2018.

I needed a crash course in C++ for an advanced class I'm taking, and having already read their C# and SQL Server books I picked this one up. I like the Murach books' format because every even numbered page has in-depth explanations and every odd numbered page has code examples and summary, so if you're in a rush or just want to brush up on a topic you can skim through the odd numbered pages.

Murachs books are well written and comprehensive .Good for beginners and intermediate level readers

I confess I do not own this book yet, but I plan to shortly.This comment is really about my experience with the problem of the C++ IDE's on the Mac Platform.I did look at what was visible in the preview of this book.This comment does not really have to do with the book per say.It has to do with the state of the problem of creating graphical applications on different platforms ratherthan having to create only Command Line apps.This book uses two Graphical Integrated Development Environments (IDE's) to develop C++ code.This book uses Microsoft Visual Studio on only Windows (admittedly the most popular platform).You can get MS Visual Studio on Linux, but I don't know if you can use it to createGraphical Apps on Linux. I don't think you can.The other IDE this book uses is Xcode on the Apple Mac OSX.And I know you can not use C++ to develop in Xcode to develop Graphical Apps on the Mac.You can only create Graphical Apps in either Objective C or the preferred language of Swift.If you use C++ in Xcode you can ONLY create Command line Apps.Now I know in learning such a complicated language such as C++ you need to learn the core language and conceptsof OOP before you get in to creating Graphical Apps, butif you can not create Graphical Apps at all on the Mac Platform in C++ with their own code development environmentwhy would why would you want to waste your time using their environment at all?However, I believe that there is a IDE that allows you to create C++ Graphical Apps on the Mac platform and that is with Qt which is not cheap.About the Murach's books I have used I will say they are excellent and I expect this one to be.So it would not have been fair to give it anything but positive stars.I also plan to get the Murach's book on Python in the near future as well.If I am wrong about any of this, I will amend this comment or delete this comment entirely.

Murach's C++ Programming is a helpful guide in navigating what we can be very treacherous waters these days. While C++ is still an essential skill for serious multiplatform coders, modern languages and toolkits predicated on rapid development can make learning it akin to picking up Latin. Doable, but just with a lot of work.The book is well-organized into four logical sections, that environment setup and proper coding conventions, C-based programming conventions like STL algorithms, object-oriented programming, and the all-too-uncomfortable memory management and function pointers. Coding for Visual Studio in Windows and XCode in MacOS is adequately covered.The examples are terse and practical, so like Murach's other titles, each topic is a lesson unto itself, which makes this a book with a very good pace but not at the expense of effective learning. There's a lot of information in this book, but it won't take you a month to go through all the examples.It's a great introduction into C++ development to get you started towards more complex and integrated projects.
