Lots of good information, well organized, well presented.My only complaint is the fonts. Both the text of the book and the source code. The font used for the regular text is very light, I would have preferred a larger, darker, and more bold font. The font used for the source code is absolutely horrible. There are little angle brackets used to identify a block (for example to highlight what has changed from the prior example). They are almost impossible to see. This is important because the author is constantly referring to the highlighted portions. Some pages are darker print than others, its inconsistent.If another edition of this book is ever made, I would like to see larger more bold font, and use a completely different method to "highlight" portions of text in the code samples.I wonder if this font issues occur in the Kindle edition...?

This is NOT a "cookbook" for regular expressions, but can be a very good reference when you lose your mind with them.I took this on work travel when I got it, and read it on the plan. The tips for working your way through interpreting regular expressions are very good, and easier to understand than the expressions themselves.It is NOT language specific, so you need to deal for yourself, with differences between say, how Python does it, and how Perl does it.This should probably be in most programmers' libraries.

I use to google "regex" and refer to the websites that would show from the search results. In my opinion, most of these sites were hard to use when trying to really understand regex. Maybe I wasn't persistent enough to screen crawl through several regex webpages/websites. I knew in my very soul I didn't understand regex well, because of constant issues coming up with seemingly easy regular expressions. I finally decided I wanted something comprehensive to learn regex.This book gave me the level of understanding I was looking for. After reading this book I can confidently say that I'm 1000% more comfortable reading and creating my own regex. I stopped once I reached chapter 7 because the last chapters, 7-10 are language specific chapters, but in the future I'll definitely refer back to those chapters once I'm working with those languages.Lastly, I did get some flak from other devs while I was reading this book "Geez you're reading a book on regex?? wow that's too boring for me." etc. etc. Don't listen to the haters! If you want a greater understanding of regex, and this book can get you there then don't listen to those nerds. At the end of the day and with learning anything, it only matters that the nerd in your shoes understands the subject. Also, take your time reading the book. It's perfectly fine to pace yourself and take more time reading, because there's a lot of needed detail.

A useful, but verbose regex backgrounder that may come in handy from time to time. It does have a Perl centric focus and uses an obscure and confusing markup system to delineate regexes in the text. Wish it had a more generalized approach to the topic of constructing regexes.

This is one of the best books a person could imagine on a highly technical theme. The author keeps a wonderful balance of theory, practice, and those pesky details that really make all the difference when one sits down to complete a project.By not asserting himself as a mathematical authority, Friedl lets his cleverness come through in a practical, 'human-to-human' way. There are a few moments when the more theoretically minded reader might want a little more detail, but the balance Friedl keeps is beyond admirable.In the entire book there are perhaps only a half-dozen pages that are 'challenging' to the mind, yet by the time the reader has finished the book he or she will be amazed, simply amazed, at the complexity of regular expressions that can be interpretted with ease. Of course, writing expressions takes more practice, but the regex muscles won't even notice the feather-light daily tasks of, say, basic data validation after working out on this text.The book will start the reader looking for possible regex solutions everywhere, and provides enough detail to take the fear out of using them.

If you're going to really use regular expressions and want to understand them then this is the book for you. It's not a quick tutorial (BBEdit's help is by far the best tutorial on regex I've seen) but it's complete and incredibly useful.

Seems they want you to learn the commands by doing extensive reading, directed by them, instead of looking stuff up in the index or a chart. Not good for someone who needs to get stuff done now.

I bought this as a parting gift for an intern, based on how much I liked it. This book, along with Learning Perl, opened my eyes to the incredible power of Regular Expressions. The knowledge I've gained has probably saved me a man-year or more of productivity over the course of my career vs. solving the same problems without RegEx's.

Arthur W Pink's views on Christianity are somewhat different than my own, but I bought this book to learn what others think the Antichrist is and where they find verses in the Bible to support their views. I got what I wanted. It was an interesting read. Mr. Pink finds references to the Antichrist in many passages of the Old and New Testament. While I did not agree with all of his ideas, I readily acknowledge his detailed research efforts to piece together many different verses into a meaningful spiritual analysis. And I got the definite impression, as I read his book, that he was well read in the writings of other conservative Christians of his era regarding the subject of the Antichrist. One could perhaps call him an Antichrist specialist. I myself have written a book on the meaning of the Bible (Heaven is in Your Future) and, as I researched the Bible for the writing of that book, I felt no strong need to even deal with the issue of the presence in our world, today, or in the future, of an Antichrist. In my humble opinion, being an expert, or an amateur, on this subject is not a necessary step to becoming a born again Christian. Nor did Mr. Pink suggest that it was a necessary step. His book seems to be more aimed at preparing those who live in the last days leading up to the end of the world for the challenges that he anticipates they will face as Christians living at that time in history. I recommend this book for those who want to explore the Biblical interpretations common among many Conservative Christian teachers who have made this subject an integral part of their teachings.

I really enjoyed Pink’s overview of the topic of the AntiChrist. It contained a significant amount of biblical information regarding the origins, career, and fate of the AntiChrist along with those who choose to follow him. While at time grim the book never becomes satirical or sensational. Instead it faces frank and verifiable renditions of the scriptures and provides evidence to corroborate its testimony. This evidence often comes in the form of reference to the works of other Biblical scholars and encourages the reader to pursue further investigation on the topic. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for both an introduction and comprehensive outline on the topic of the AntiChrist.

I have read Mr Pink before and have marveled at his exhaustive coverage of a subject. I do not have a fixed End Times doctrine. I have read a number of books on the End Times and Mr Pink's dealing with this subject has some very interesting points. The book interprets where antichrist comes from, his many names and his personality. It describes his relations with the nations as well as with Israel.

An eye and mind opening book. Especially the exposition of the prominence of Israel in the prophesies rather than these being concerning the whole world. read it and keep this in mind and heart and let it be to salvation. Amen

This is a classic book and one that needs to be read if you are interested in end time subjects.

I bought this for a friend's child, growing up in a Spanish-speaking home. Little 4-year old Reyli is so smart, and pretty good already with English, thanks to his attendance at Head Start. I bought him this book, and from it he has learned the alphabet. He had also learned to relate to the letters individually, vs. the "abcdefg" song. This, in turn, is helping him with early reading.We also have a lot of fun with it, even when the book isn't around. Sometimes when he's here, I ask him out of the blue, "Hey Reyli, can "M" go first today?" "No!" he says. Then we have fun back and forth about it. "OK, how about "C" for the cookie you are eating?" Lots of fun, giggles and play in that.I guess the best compliment I can pay is that not only does Reyli love the book, but so does his older sister, his mom, and I, and I'm 54! Don't hesitate, grab this one, no matter what your age.

Both me and my 4 year old son love this book. It is educational and funny. Please check the attached photo of first page.

A funny and delightful book for both children and adults. My 22-month old wanted me to read this book to him several times a day for several weeks straight to the point that he could anticipate some pages. It was fun to read together. :)

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book to my son! It has a nice element of silly humor. Honestly I have gotten so tired of reading "normal" alphabet books that reuse all the same animals, etc for the different letters. This one is definitely unique and a family favorite.

My kiddo enjoyed this book. It's silly but with a cause. He really enjoyed the mixed up alphabet.

I gave this to a 6-year-old who apparently can say the alphabet backwards (I didn't know that when I gave her the book). If that were all it was about, it wouldn't be half as entertaining!It starts with the premise that Z (is for Zebra) wants to go first in the alphabet because it is tired of being last, and so the alphabet proceeds backwards as far as W (is for Whale). Then everything goes crazy, and all the letters want to get into the act out-of-order. So it gets a little chaotic, but a list of the real alphabet is always at the bottom of the pages to keep it clear.The illustrations take at least 3 readings of the book to take everything in, they are so clever. And every single stroke in the illustrations makes sense -- and made me chuckle as I read. Some took the second or third reading before I picked up on the meaning, so it is one of those books that parents will enjoy reading aloud as much as their kids ehjoy seeing and hearing it.

I purchased AlphaOops specifically for my 6-1/2-year-old daughter, whose name begins with a Z. Upon first reading, she thought is was "strange" that Z would want to go first. The next night, she asked for the book again and the second time it was "silly." The third night in a row, she had all kinds of ideas about all the letters, their personalities, their goals, etc. Not only was it fun to read aloud (it reminded me somewhat of Jon Scieszka's style) but it inspired my daughter to think of her own stories for the alphabet.The art is striking enough to interest very small children and the length is perfect for a bedtime book for kids of any age. We keep this one handy, beside new & old classics by authors ranging from from Dr Seuss to Mo Willems.

Before taking my older daughter to preschool, I sat down to read this book with my 5 year old and 2 year old. They loved it so much that they brought it with them in the car, and my preschooler wanted to bring it with her and share it with the class. She insisted that I read it to her several times, and now she's reading it on her own. I'm very happy with this purchase! :)

About the Author

JULIA CHILD was born in Pasadena, California. She graduated from Smith College and worked for the OSS during World War II; afterward she lived in Paris, studied at the Cordon Bleu, and taught cooking with Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, with whom she wrote the first volume of Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961). In 1963, Boston’s WGBH launched The French Chef television series, which made Julia Child a national celebrity, earning her the Peabody Award in 1965 and an Emmy in 1966. from the chapter Soups and Two Mother Sauces"Once you have mastered a technique, you hardly need look at a recipe again."Homemade soups fill the kitchen with a welcome air, and can be so full and natural and fresh that they solve that always nagging question of "what to serve as a first course." ***CHOWDERSTraditional chowders all start off with a hearty soup base of onions and potatoes, and that makes a good soup just by itself. To this fragrant base you then add chunks of fish, or clams, or corn, or whatever else seems appropriate. (Note: You may leave out the pork and substitute another tablespoon of butter for sautéing the onions.)The Chowder Soup Base For about 2 quarts, to make a 2½-quart chowder serving 6 to 84 ounces (2/3 cup) diced blanched salt pork or bacon (see box, page 60)1 Tbs butter3 cups (1 pound) sliced onions1 imported bay leaf¾ cup crumbled "common" or pilot crackers, or 1 pressed-down cup fresh white bread crumbs (see box, page 46)6 cups liquid (milk, chicken stock [page 4], fish stock [page 5], clam juices, or a combination)3½ cups (1 pound) peeled and sliced or diced boiling potatoesSalt and freshly ground white pepperSauté the pork or bacon bits slowly with the butter in a large saucepan for 5 minutes, or until pieces begin to brown. Stir in the onions and bay leaf; cover, and cook slowly 8 to 10 minutes, until the onions are tender. Drain off fat and blend crackers or bread crumbs into onions. Pour in the liquid; add the potatoes and simmer, loosely covered, for 20 minutes or so, until the potatoes are tender. Season to taste with salt and white pepper, and the soup base is ready.chowder suggestionsnew england clam chowder.--For about 2½ quarts, serving 6 to 8. Scrub and soak 24 medium-size hard-shell clams (see box). Steam them for 3 to 4 minutes in a large tightly covered saucepan with 1 cup water, until most have opened. Remove the opened clams; cover, and steam the rest another minute or so. Discard any unopened clams. Pluck meat from the shells, then decant steaming-liquid very carefully, so all sand remains in the saucepan; include the clam-steaming liquid as part of the chowder base. Meanwhile, mince the clam meats in a food processor or chop by hand. Fold them into the finished chowder base. Just before serving, heat to below the simmer--so the clams won't overcook and toughen. Fold in a little heavy cream or sour cream if you wish; thin with milk if necessary, correct seasoning, and serve.to prepare clams. Scrub one at a time under running water, discarding any that are cracked, damaged, or not tightly closed. Soak 30 minutes in a basin of salted water (1/3 cup salt per 4 quarts water). Lift out, and if more than a few grains of sand remain in the basin, repeat. Refrigerate, covered by a damp towel. It's wise to use them within a day or two.fish chowder. Prepare the chowder base using fish stock (page 5), and/or light chicken stock (page 4), and milk. Cut into 2-inch chunks 2 to 2½ pounds of skinless, boneless lean fish, such as cod, haddock, halibut, monkfish, or sea bass, all one kind or a mixture. Add to the finished chowder base and simmer 2 to 3 minutes, just until fish is opaque and springy. Correct seasoning, and top each serving, if you wish, with a spoonful of sour cream.chicken chowder. Substitute boneless, skinless chicken breasts for fish, and make the chowder base with chicken stock and milk.corn chowder. Prepare the chowder base using 6 cups of light chicken stock and milk. Stir 3 cups or so of grated fresh corn into the finished base, adding, if you wish, 2 green and/or red peppers chopped fine and sautéed briefly in butter. Bring to the simmer for 2 to 3 minutes; correct seasoning, and top each serving, if you wish, with a spoonful of sour cream.From the Hardcover edition.

Of all of Julia Child's books, this one is by far my favorite. The passion for and honest dedication to excellence that she shows towards ingredients and her culinary craft through this book is so quintessentially "Julia," and exemplifies all the reasons she is the legend that she is. This book was originally her own personal notes that she had built up over the years; any one who is drawn to culinary excellence should let the reality of how valuable it is to have that information at your fingertips sink in. I have read this book several times cover to cover (much as one would a novel) because I am so taken in by the beautiful way she writes about the cooking process. Whether for learning or reference or both, this book is a must-have for professional chefs, hobby chefs, and generalized foodies alike.

This is an incredible little book 107 fact filled pages that is an amazing collection of essential techniques...sort of a "how to" of everything you'd like to know about cooking all in one place and simply explained! I've been cooking for 46 years and began as a bride with zero experience by having to look up the recipe for scrambled eggs, a baked potato...you name it and I would have no clue...just stared at the oven knob and all those numbers between 200 and 550 wondering how I'd ever find out what temperature I was supposed to use to bake a potato. I literally had to begin with the most basic recipes and learn technique by a trial and error method and wore out two copies of the Joy of Cooking. 46 years later and what now seems like a lifetime of loving to cook, collecting 100's of cookbooks I cried when I read Julia's Kitchen Wisdom...like a visit with a beloved friend...but OMG if she'd just written this book when I was starting out life could have been so much easier. If you only have one cookbook and whether you are just beginning to learn to cook or you've been cooking for years THIS IS A MUST HAVE BOOK. The title says it all "Essential Techniques and Recipes from A Lifetime of Cooking" by Julia Child. This is not "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" which blew my mind as a young cook...this is like Julia in your kitchen teaching you. A perfect gift.

If you love to cook or want to learn how you need this book. My love of cooking (and eating) began with Julia. I would watch her show on PBS afternoons when I got home from school. Once I was married I began to explore her recipes and techniques. The only recipe I could duplicate with success was her Coq au Vin...mostly because we were too broke to purchase much more than chicken, let alone her amazing cookbook. Many years and too many tuna noodle casseroles later I began to cook in earnest. My kids were older, money was not as tight so I could expand my repertoire. I found this book in, of all places, Marshall's. It is now my bible. She breaks down "mother" techniques and goes on to give you recipes using them. This book is my bible. It and "Fanny Farmer" are the only cookbooks I have now. I gave the rest away.I will give you one warning: never lend this book to anyone. I made this mistake and this is why I had to purchase a replacement. It will never leave my sight again.

Julia's Kitchen Wisdom is the perfect cookbook to purchase and use on your Kindle, especially if you have a color-based Kindle or iPad with the Kindle reading app. The recipes are easy to read using either device. What I love most about this cookbook is the conciseness of having basic (or foundation) recipes readily available. I have used this cookbook in the kitchen as I place the iPad in my cookbook holder. I pre-ordered this book based on the blurb alone; it sounded like a good domestic/psychological thriller. Had I known it was part of a detective series, I would’ve skipped it.Still, I tried. Amid mounting cliches and mistakenly attributing “More Than A Feeling” to REO Speedwagon (cringe), I tried. But ultimately, I couldn’t press on .... too many cliches, too juvenile-sounding, too boring, too formulaic.For fans of this author — as well as detective series books — it might be an enjoyable read. Just not my thing, and I wish there had been some indication that this actually isn’t a stand-alone domestic thriller.

Laurie & Robert have a toxic marriage. Laurie is the victim of years of psychological abuse. One afternoon, she overhears Robert talking lovingly on the phone. He wants a divorce, so he can marry his mistress with whom he fathered a child. (Their daughter is 7 months old.) That day, Laurie has a major meltdown & publicly outs his affair at a neighborhood barbecue. They've been living apart, ever since.One day, she's expecting him to come over but he doesn't show. While she's waiting for him, she drinks an entire bottle of vodka, some wine & prosecco and she blacks out. When she comes to, she's lying on the bed & she's covered in blood. She has no recollection of going upstairs. She finds her estranged husband dead in the guest bathroom of their home with his throat savagely cut, his head almost decapitated and he's been stabbed 18 times in the chest & stomach. He was slaughtered. She calls the police & when they arrive, she's intoxicated & incoherent. It appears as if a spurned wife took revenge on a cheating husband. It has all the hallmarks of a crime of passion. But, the lead detective intuits there's more to it than meets the eye.Her best friend Monica had introduced Robert to Laurie. Laurie & Monica have known each other since they were teens. Monica tells the detective about an auto accident that Laurie had about a year ago. She was 8 months pregnant with twins, when she discovered Robert's infidelity. She was in a terrible state, crying, hysterical, hormonal, heavily pregnant, devastated & in total despair. She had been driving down to where he was working to confront him, when she lost control of her vehicle & careened off the road. It took them nearly 6 hours to pull her out of the wreck. She was barely alive, when they finally got her free. She suffered a collapsed lung, broken ribs, a shattered collarbone & internal bleeding. They weren't able to save the twins; a girl & a boy. She completely unraveled. She had a mental breakdown & still suffers from a deep, dark, debilitating depression. She was prescribed antidepressants, sedatives, a cocktail of prescription drugs AND she self-medicates with alcohol.Someone murdered Robert. Perhaps, that someone is her. But, she can't remember. And, just because she had a motive & found the body doesn't mean that she's the killer.Robert was a womanizer; a sexual predator. So, they can't rule out a jealous husband or boyfriend, or even a lover. Early on in the investigation, it's perfectly clear that Laurie is being framed. Someone has set her up. But, who & why remain a mystery.Fragments of her memory return. She remembers being carried up the stairs & the person who was carrying her was wearing perfume. Someone else was in the house on the day Robert was murdered. She is sure of it. But, no one will believe her. Her DNA is all over the murder weapon, she had motive & opportunity, a history of depression & mental illness, there was no sign of a break-in, no evidence of 3rd party...It all comes out in court. Monica & Robert are brother & sister. Their incestuous relationship began when Monica was only 13. Their chosen method of birth control is abortion. Monica has had 6 or 7. It's a sordid, deviant story. ICKY!!!

This was a good book..but I give it four stars because there was something I didn't like...I had this book figured out half way through and knew exactly who was the bad guy here because the author completely gave it away. I don't like that. Not that early anyways. I kind of thought that was a bit of a let down.

Another disappointment from the recent onslaught of trendy Brits falling far short in attempts to clone The Girl on the Train. The biggest mystery of this book is the questionable glowing reviews that lure in hapless readers. The plot never thickens, the characters are predictably two dimensional and the writing has no depth. As for its ‘unpredictable’ conclusion, any mystery buff can figure that out in the opening chapters. What’s most tiring of all is the use of trendy brand names routinely thrown onto the pages as a shortcut substitute for scene development. If you love a well thought out, artfully described story with authentic characters and meaningful plot development, don’t waste your time on this.

This is a wonderful mystery! The characters are very real in all the aspects of human emotions revealed by Weatherly! She pulls you along, revealing the best and worst of human motivations!My one negative comment concerns the regular misuse of pronouns: using her where she is correct, using their where sexual identity of character is known- meaning there is no excuse for using "Their" when his or her, the correct singular pronoun is demanded! This is a pet peeve of mine and has ruined many a story for me. But Anna-Lou Weatherly's masterpiece compelled me to over look these errors, because her writing is so well crafted.
