Review
“America’s favorite poet.”—The Wall Street Journal“[Billy Collins] is able, with precious few words, to make me cry. Or laugh out loud. He is a remarkable artist. To have such power in such an abbreviated form is deeply inspiring.”—J. J. Abrams, The New York Times Book Review “His work is poignant, straightforward, usually funny and imaginative, also nuanced and surprising. It bears repeated reading and reading aloud.”—The Plain Dealer “Collins has earned almost rock-star status. . . . He knows how to write layered, subtly witty poems that anyone can understand and appreciate—even those who don’t normally like poetry. . . . The Collins in these pages is distinctive, evocative, and knows how to make the genre fresh and relevant.”—The Christian Science Monitor “Collins’s new poems contain everything you've come to expect from a Billy Collins poem. They stand solidly on even ground, chiseled and unbreakable. Their phrasing is elegant, the humor is alive, and the speaker continues to stroll at his own pace through the plainness of American life.”—The Daily Beast “[Collins’s] poetry presents simple observations, which create a shared experience between Collins and his readers, while further revealing how he takes life’s everyday humdrum experiences and makes them vibrant.”—The Times Leader “Former poet laureate and reader favorite Collins, the maestro of the running-brook line and the clever pivot, celebrates the resonance and absurdity of what might be called the poet’s attention-surfeit disorder. . . . But Collins’s droll wit is often a diversionary tactic, so that when he strikes you with the hard edge of his darker visions, you reel.”—Booklist“A stellar jumping-off point . . . a joyride through all layers of his approach from 2002 to the present, which should not only please his current fans, but inspire many others to dive into Mr. Collins’s work, headfirst.”—The Rumpus

What a talent. Oops, I'd never heard of Billy Collins until he read the most delicious poem on the new Prarie Home Companion radio show. Poetry is manna to my soul and Collins' funny and deep introspective reflections on the human heart, on the ordinary, on the every day are surprising and even affirming. Loved this book and am in awe of this poet. Great read in delectable little morsels, one per page. Yum.
Billy Collins poems cover a wide range of subject matter they're thought provoking & beautiful. I find myself frequently revisiting this book whether curled up on the couch or needing a quiet pick me up at work on a stressful day. It's a big book of quiet comfort I highly recommend
This is a "recent best of..." collection that has both funny and serious poems, each with that unique narrative Billy Collins voice ("that isn't the author's voice").There are a lot of contemporary poets out there today who don't like Billy Collins because he is accessible to "non-elites." The average person can pick up a book of his poetry and enjoy it. His poems speak on many levels, so it is quite simple to read a work of his and enjoy it at face value. But a person can also look deeper and find those little abstractions, bits of symbolism, and other aspects present in literature and poetry. It is this ability that makes Collins a good poet, and makes him exceptionally talented to continue to pursue one of his passions -- to bring the joy of poetry to the widest audience possible. Poetry shouldn't be restricted to the academics, it shouldn't be restricted to an elite few, it should be shared with all. This book does that. How else could a book of poetry be discussed on The Colbert Report and include an entertaining interview with Collins (and a co-reading with Stephen Colbert of "To My Favorite 17-Year-Old High School Girl")?If you're looking for a good entrance into the world of poetry, you won't go wrong with this. If you've enjoyed Billy Collins in the past, then this book absolutely must become a part of your collection. And if you don't like Collins because you're a (jealous) elitist, then go away.
Billy Collins has a sense of humor that is ALWAYS in play.So many of his poems end with an unexpected twist or turn. And yet each is welcome and one never has the sense of "there's the hook".It always seems original and fresh. Not that this is a "laugh book". Collins' work can be moving as well as light. But how can you not love a poem like "Hangover"?HangoverIf I were crowned emperor this morning, every child who is playing Marco Poloin the swimming pool of this motel, shouting the name Marco Polo back and forthMarco Polo Marco Polowould be required to read a biographyof Marco Polo-a long one with fine print-as well as a history of China and of Venice, the birthplace of the venerated explorerMarco Polo Marco Poloafter which each child would be quizzedby me then executed by drowningregardless how much they managedto retain about the glorious life and times ofMarco Polo Marco Polo
I am a poetry person and a fan of Billy Collins, relishing his droll humor and ability to nail human foibles and relationships. I own most of his books and attend his readings. What is high praise is that my husband--a non-poetry person--also read and relished this book.
This one's for you, Billy:Pompous, punctilious pedagogues preachThat penetrability has no placeIn the prestigious penthouse of poetryThat meaning needs cloakingIn obfuscationOr reference to lesser-known tropesThat grokking the essenceRequires more effortThan digging to ChinaWith a plastic forkBut truth and beautyHave never been shyAbout hiding in plain sightAnd humor and whimsyAre scalpels that sliceThrough the skin to the inner light
Billy Collins is the best of the best in poetry. He has a gift for painting a picture with words that connect the experience with the emotion. His art for simple detail brings his writing to life. In college, poetry was defined as "all of the best words in all of the best places". Billy Collins has no match. Pull up a chair and feast on a refreshing banquet of words so cleverly placed.
I have been a Billy Collins fan for a long time (me and a lot of other people!) and this book is a really good o ne. I don't know how he (Billy Collins) does it, but when I pick up this book and read a poem I am - more often than not - instantly transformed. Life becomes fascinating, important, joyous, by the time I have finished the poem. I think "I feel like that" or "I could love like that" or "I do love like that" or "I love life as much as that" or Wow!"
