Great map!
I thought this map would be much more detailed.
After fifteen years in Paraguay during which I have bemoaned the scarcity of good road maps, I was excited to see this offering from Amazon. Great was my deception when I received it.It is a pity that the cartographers choices have made this map mostly un-usable: By using the same graphisms for black-top paved roads and dirt tracks, they have ensured their map is useless to plan a car journey, in this country where dirt tracks are impassable for days after the rain.While ignoring still active railway tracks, they show some which have been closed and dismantled for over thirty years, and others that never existed.Some place names are misspelled, some towns appear several times on the map, placed a few miles apart, sometimes being shown on both sides of the river, in other cases places that have changed name over the years are being shown as several different towns.The map of the Asuncion town centre bears little likeness to reality in some places, with several street names that are misplaced or misspelled, missing streets, one-way streets shown as dual-carriageway avenues, not to mention a zone of shanty-towns where tourists should avoid venturing marked as "open ground", making one think that the map was drawn by people who had never been near the place.This is not to say that it is completely useless, but if you let yourself be guided by this map, you must be ready for some surprises, and should keep in mind at all time the teaching of Alfred Korzybski: "The map is not the territory it represents".
I bought this map to study Paraguay before leaving for my 2 year stint in the Peace Corps in Paraguay! It is up to date and has all the major roads and most all of the tiny towns in PA. None of the other maps that I have seen in the bookstores and travel places in Asuncion are as comprehensive and clear as this one, so I'm ordering more to share with the people here! If you are travelling to PA for a visit(and I highly recommend it--the people are fantastic and the country is beautiful!), then get this before you go!
