Amazon.com Review

The second of three books published by the Center for Environmental Structure to provide a "working alternative to our present ideas about architecture, building, and planning," A Pattern Language offers a practical language for building and planning based on natural considerations. The reader is given an overview of some 250 patterns that are the units of this language, each consisting of a design problem, discussion, illustration, and solution. By understanding recurrent design problems in our environment, readers can identify extant patterns in their own design projects and use these patterns to create a language of their own. Extraordinarily thorough, coherent, and accessible, this book has become a bible for homebuilders, contractors, and developers who care about creating healthy, high-level design.

This book is insightful and fun to read. It is also a book that is easy to pick up and read a bit, and put itdown and come back later to pick up where you left off, because it is broken into many very short chapters, each of which contain a key idea. It's hard to describe this book, because it is so unique in its approachto telling the reader "how things ought to be" concerning everything from civil planning and city layout,to floor-plans, to architectural design, to furnishing. The author is very opinionated and does not shy awayfrom boldly telling you what is wrong with the physical constructs of our urban, suburban, and rural areas, and how all of that should be properly done in his imagined ideal world. In some ways, this book is like reading the professional diary of your crazy uncle who is constantly rantingabout what's wrong with the world, and how he thinks it should be set right. However, after reading it fora while, you get the impression that the author is not really crazy, so much as he is a brilliant eccentricwhose experience and understanding is based on an extremely broad appreciation of how human beings chooseto craft their surroundings, and how we get it right, and how we get it wrong, and why.Be forewarned... you are not going to agree with everything the author says.I don't agree, for example, with his outlandish claim that living in a home that is more than four storiesabout the ground will eventually make you crazy, because I have loved living on the top floor of myhigh-rise condo for the past ten years. I also don't agree with his idea that all kitchen cabinets shouldbe open shelves with no doors, because the doors just get in the way, hide what is contained therein, and are essential useless. I must admit, however, that I love reading the author's insights on thingswith which I disagree with him, and I have to admit that even on such issues... he's got good points! Many times I find myself saying "Almost, thou persuadest me."To be fair, I actually do agree with the author's views regarding the vast majority of his observations,as they are all just good common-sense approaches, and I must admit they often leave me thinking"Yes, that's such a beautifully simple truth... why don't we always build it that way, or do it that way?"This book gives you the benefit of the sage wisdom of an author who is genuinely worth readingand considering. Even though this book is decades-old, most of its observations are timeless. It's so hard to classify the book. Is it a Western approach to Feng Shui ... without all the questionableEastern Spiritualism, and more of practical philosophy on how to best craft your environment?Or is it better described as foundational reading for everyone from a City Planner, to an Architect,to anyone building a house, to anyone one looking to make their home a more pleasant place? However you choose to classify it... this book is a unique, delightful treatise on how things shouldideally be in order for human beings to be more comfortable, productive, and happy in their surroundings.

Other reviews correctly address this book's wholesomeness and holistic approach to building good cities and buildings and other structural frames for full, good human lives in a healthy world. Alexander does have a few particular crotchets, however, which have a surprisingly deep effect on the structure of the language he lays out here. Watch for these, and be reminded (as Alexander also reminds you) that patterns are the product of the people who made them, and may disappear or change for different groups.1. Swimming. He is intensely focused on swimming as a major factor in civic planning and personal recreation. It's a considerable contortion at multiple points.2. Dancing, especially in the streets. Alexander was a great fan of the Peckham Clinic which focused on (guess what) swimming and dancing as exercise and recreation. It shows.3. Many of his patterns make an uncomfortably dated misstep when they pertain to women--and another, subtler one when dealing with work concerns and issues of children while not mentioning women directly. Women working outside the home is not a gutiding concern or a base assumption for him; a base assumption IS that women prefer and want to care for children. It's a very important shaping concern for many other parts of life, so this blind spot, characteristic of its time and place and socioeconomic environment, is very significant.4. Disabled people, other than mildly infirm and otherwise hale elderly people, do not exist. Another blind spot.Bear these crotchets in mind as you consider these patterns, and how to find even better patterns for a wonderful world.

Bought this as a gift for a friend. Since its original publication, I have purchased numerous copies as gifts and to have in multiple locations for reference. Written in a series of short 1-2 page chapters, the book goes through an array of critical "place making" criteria based on human behavior. As an architect/urban designer, it is one of my top 5 reference books when thinking through an new project. Although not a book intended to be read cover to cover, some of his other publications are written in a way to show how these "place making" elements can be combined to create a livable human habitat.

In college, I was so intrigued by this way of examining the spaces we live in, from our literal kitchen sink to the way our cities and countries are arranged--and was delighted when my 17-year-old discovered it independently through TED talk etc. recommendations. He treats it like his bible, reading it passage by passage and noticing how the way chairs, streets, etc. are arranged affects how we live. He's considering city planning or something as a career now, but it's also just a really readable, interesting book that ideally, tons of people should read so that we can live in a more beautiful and livable world!

Classic book from the 1970's written by a Berkley, CA and Oregon of University Professor. It is for serious architects or engineers who wish to be challenged by values in the way things are built. This man is the Archimedes of city planning. It is a dense read but will fire you up with dreams of a better way to plan humans enjoying each other, living together in balance with resources. It is over 1,000 valuable pages of hope for city planners or individual architects. It is a priceless AND timeless book, worthy to be preserved for 1,000's of years like Archimedes gifts to us. Also, see his more reader friendly "The Timeless Way of Building" only 550 pages long.

This is not just a great Batman comicbook story, but one of my favorite comics ever. And that, not so much of what this means to the medium in the way that Watchmen,Dark Knigh Returns,Asteryos Polyp, etc.did and still do. But in a way that... this is a greatly executed comic book story that praises the medium much more than most give it credit to. Paul Pope is a master storyteller, not the same way that Alan Moore or Frank Miller was/is. He is his own artist in a different way. He "lives" comics in his own distinct style as truly an artform that demands respect on its own special way. He tells a dystopian story not that far away in the future, and drops us right in the middle "of things" and every time that you read this story you get something more... and the second, third time new areas of story unfolds in you mind, hints and pieces that are always there but were not meant for you to consciously get them the first time... but (more) felt. Do not get me wrong, the greatness of this story in part lies to its "appearing" simplicity and you are welcome to read it only once and enjoy it. But if you like it enough and read it again you really enjoy it even more. Greatly designed and executed, at least to my undestanding. I can of course undestand that it is a matter of taste Paul Popes "style" of art, some may not like it, perfectly understandable, but it really is a pity not to praise his incredible storytelling technique and efficiency. One of the few comic (and not only) books that every time I read it I truly enjoy it... in a slightly different way. And what do you expect me to say about "Broken Nose"... or... How cool is that Pope? A true artist.Invest in this book... unless you do not like the art style, everything here is top-notch. Wish for an absolute editon...

This is posssibly the most underrated Batman comic ever. Perfect in every fashion, this is a must read and must own for any Batman fan.

The Batman 100 story which dominates this time is excellent. While I don't care for popes artwork, his storytelling is superb. Well worth reading.

Paul Pope's art and storytelling are amazing. This is one of my all-time favorites. Highly recommended!

Brilliant stuff!!! Highly recommended!

Paul Pope 's Batman year 100 is the kind of Batman I want to know more about . He bleeds , he sweats ..Bravo

I liked both characters but... Why does she (always) have to almost die before they can finish their bond? Why did neither of their 'seers' get a hint of trouble? Why are the sex scenes interchangeable between the books? Why are we supposed to find it funny when Greta insults (almost all) the women (and in the process insults the intelligence of the men) and the women insult Greta based on looks and age? Why is Greta allowed to insult their mate with no consequences from the males? Why is being able to insult Greta (since she called them a slut or something similar) supposed to prove the new female is a dominant wolf? I really don't see much difference between the so called female dominants and the submissives. And it looks like the children are learning to have no respect for Greta too - and yet she is supposed to be a sort of grandmother to most of the kids.I think this series is just getting too repetitive.

REVIEW: "WILD HUNGER" (The Phoenix Pack) by Suzanne WrightSERIES: The Phoenix Pack, Book 7FORMAT: Kindle EditionPUBLICATION DATE: May 28, 2018GENRE: Paranormal RomanceREVIEW BY: NoeticalRATING: 5/5 StarsPOV: Third person, alternating between hero and heroine's point of view.As a longtime fan of Suzanne Wright’s novels about both The Phoenix and Mercury Packs, I was happy to see Patrick "Trick" Hardy, enforcer of the The Phoenix Pack, finally find his mate, half–wolf shifter Francesca "Frankie" Newman. Although Trick knew her when they were both "pups," a family tragedy tore Frankie away from pack life when she was only three, before either knew they were true mates. She was subsequently raised by her mother's human family. Ms. Wright also enriches their romance with a thrilling mystery involving their past.Frankie is creative, bright, and courageous. Trick is dominant, possessive, protective...and hot as hell, but the thing he offers Frankie that no other in her life has before is full acceptance and reverence of everything that she is. As with every other book in this series, it frequently had me laughing out loud.In more ways than one, this was an excellent addition to the series. The publisher provided me with a free copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. However, I liked it enough to buy my own copy. Highly recommended for followers of the Phoenix Pack, and anyone who loves hot shifters and kicka** heroines.SEXUAL CONTENT: Only suitable for people 18 and older. Several scenes of hot M/F sex, mostly within the context of a relationship. Some explicit sexual activity depicted, including libidinous dialogue during and regarding sex. Backstory alludes to some homosexual (M/M) activity.VIOLENCE: A few scenes with paranormal blood and gore. Backstory alludes to brutal murder.PROFANITY: Extensive use of obscene words. About 436 instances of various profane words occur in the story, including 141 lewd anatomical references. However, it blends within the storyline, such that none of the characters seem crude.HUMOR: As usual for Ms. Wright's novels, I laughed out loud several times.ENDING: Satisfying HEA without a cliffhanger.RATING BREAKDOWN HERO: 5/5 Stars HEROINE: 4.5/5 Stars CHARACTERIZATION: 5/5 Stars ROMANCE: 5/5 Stars SEX SCENE WRITING: 4/5 Stars PLOT: 4.5/5 Stars DIALOGUE: 5/5 Stars MYSTERY: 4/5 Stars HUMOR: 4.5/5 Stars STORYTELLING: 4.5/5 Stars STORY ENDING: 5/5 Stars*******************************OVERALL RATING: 5/5 STARS Is sex the central theme of this book? NO Do I recommend this book? YES Do I recommend this series? YES Do I auto-buy books by this author? YES

Suzanne Wright is one of my favourite authors when it comes to Shifters - I've really enjoyed reading all the books on The Phoenix and The Mercury Packs. The books are always funny and there's always some type of drama/action that means I'm unable to put my iPad down until I've finished the book.I loved Trick and Frankie as a couple. Trick is so sure of himself and had no doubts that Frankie was going to be his. He was so patient with her, and understanding of her need to be more settled and find out more about her early life after being raised by her human relatives. I loved Frankie - she was such a logical thinker, and when faced with some of Tricks past relationships she was confident enough to accept she was what Trick wanted! I hope we get more on Bracken soon - the few glimpses about him in this book has me wondering what's going to happen with him. Bracken next please!!

This is my favorite werewolf series, but Wild Hunger isn't my favorite book in it. I've tried to put my finger on why, but I'm still not entirely sure of the reason for my reaction. This book is about Trick, one of the Phoenix pack's enforcers. For once we have a hero who isn't navel gazing about his problems. Despite having difficult parents, he is well adjusted and is looking forward to being mated. His mate, Frankie, is also a wolf shifter and lives among humans. She is also a sculptor who makes strange, dark pieces. Her father killed her mother and then himself. Frankie saw the whole thing, but doesn't remember it.The plot is good, but possibly not as exciting as some of the other books. The writing is good, but not as funny as usual and I missed the insouciant nature of the previous characters. Suzanne Wright writes jealous exes like no one else and there were a few in this book, which is always fun. This time the encounters weren't as snarky, which was a shame. All in all, a good book.

Here is another eye-popping collection of homoerotic art by Bruno Gmundner. This is gay art without any false modesty. There's just about every erotic fantasy imaginable -- and then some! And the scenes are illustrated in a wide range of styles that include everything from cartoons and sketches to neoclassical renderings. Whatever turns you on you will probably find here. There's a sampling of everything in today's gay male erotica. This is my second "Stripped" book. I was mesmerized by Bruno Gmundner's first anthology, "Stripped -- The Illustrated Male" and this second book is no less appealing. If you enjoy the illustrated male you will find "Stripped -- Uncensored" a visual feast!

Harvey Redding has pulled together a gorgeous collection of homoerotic art, in a variety of two dimensional mediums. This all-color, hard bound book includes both a title index and artist index, maximizing the images that fill every page. From classic to camp, you'll find subtle, contemplative work to over-the-top ribaldry. From art stars such as Robert W. Richards, Michael Kirwan, and Victor Gadino to intriguing, unsung talents, you won't be disappointed with this sexy celebration of men.

I enjoy Bruno Gmunder's art. I was rather excited to see a hard cover book of his work. So I ordered a copy. The picture on the front is of Bruno's work and it even states on the cover "By Bruno Gmunder" of which after removing the plastic cover I found it is not. The book is "Edited" by Bruno. As a matter of fact the cover picture is the only work of his in the book! The book is of many artists. Some are good some are not. If you are looking for a book of nude male art this it it! If you are looking for Bruno's work look elsewhere!!!

Jake, John, and Braden have synthesized the most important design-thinking concepts of today into a book that is worth its weight in gold. Seriously — I’ve translated the ideas and checklists in this book to tens of thousands of dollars already as a design consultant. It’s weird... even after 4 years of studying Art & Design in college and 4 years of working at a big tech company, this book was STILL a revelation to me. It helped me understand and practice design in a whole new way. I was lucky to be mentored by top-tier designers. Now you can be mentored by some of the best designers in the Silicon Valley. Listen in on how they work and think...90% of what you need to know about designing great products is in these 257 glorious pages. The other 10% is just blood, sweat and tears.

I'm a product manager and the Sprint Book has been a great new strategy for our product team to validate quickly! It's a flexible method to build on your team's energy and domain knowledge in 5 days. Our team is entirely remote so when we get together it's helpful to have proven strategy guide our product initiatives. I also highly recommend picking up Design Sprint Kits to accompany the Sorint Book because it has all the supplies included: Design Sprint Office Kit for Creativity and Productivity. Either way, read this book.

Most of us who really care about strategic product innovation have implemented bits and pieces of the Sprint system. But thanks to the writer's extensive experimentation, there is no more comprehensive guide to doing it successfully. This book is thorough without being tiresome. It provides excellent case studies to illustrate the concepts (and provides interesting insights to major tech wins). The exhaustive checklists and supplies recommendations are invaluable. And, most importantly, the lessons learned from sprint team structure and decision making models will make us all better and faster at identifying, developing, and prototyping product and service opportunities.I would give this book six stars if I could. Five seems inadequate.

I'm impressed with the strategic and tactical rigor this book articulates. Great examples across several companies. It includes an accessible step-by-step articulation of process and tool suggestions to maximize a team's time. It also identifies realistic challenges to expect. As a fan of Lean Startup who has struggled at times with implementation, I'm especially struck by how this constrained process appears to validate a problem, market, hypothesis, prototype and get to real world testing, all while mitigating product launch risk. I'm very excited to take on this new process in earnest in the days to come.

The book is well written with good examples of how different Sprints progressed and worked as well as some that didn't and why.If you want to try running a Design Sprint I strongly recommend you do 2 things:1. Read the The Design Sprint -- GV - Google Ventures [...] site thoroughly as well asMichael Margolis -- Medium [...] articles as there are a lot of IU important and helpful hints in there, E.g. Use Gotomeeting to stream and record the interviews on Friday and get the camera Michael recommends.2. Make sure at least 2 of you read the entire book, ideally everyone should read it. The Sprint is a great process (I've used many and this is definitely one of the best) but there are many important steps day by day and it's hard for one person to stay on top of all of them.Good luck, if you stick to the process I think you will have success.

This book is the single most tactical problem-solving book.If you've been wondering what you need to do to get something done and build a solution to a real problem, this book and the sprint method just cuts right to the chase and gives you a set of tools you can actually use.Sprint is an excellent read with a real tangible approach to solving problems. There's so much that has gone into the design sprint method behind this book and so much to learn from the design sprint experience itself - e.g. human behavior, team work, focus, efficiency, success/failure, etc. I've been using their design sprint method for years now and I am really excited to see it codified in this book. The best part is that you can use the sprint method for almost any kind of project that's aiming to solve a problem. If the key to getting something done is to just "do it", this book and the sprint demonstrates the how to "do" part.

It's an interesting approach, but smacks of "this solves everything" - like many business books written by consultants. The author focuses on perhaps half a dozen success stories - really doesn't give you much of an idea how successful this approach is likely to be on any given project/issue to which it is applied. The emphasis on progress over perfection is good, and having a specific outcome and deadline to which the group is accountable is also good practice. It's perhaps a good arrow to have in your quiver.

If you work in a team-based project environment, I cannot recommend Sprint highly enough. The five-day process a great solution for quickly moving a project from concept through prototype. Even more importantly, the decision making exercises outlined in the Sprint process are readily applicable in all sorts of business decisions. "Note-and-Vote" has become a standby on my team to solicit ideas and quickly establish a direction without subjecting everyone to hours of waffling debate.Read this book!

#5,310 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The reviewers that gave this book less than 4-5 stars are exactly the people that need to re read this book. We see the world through the lens of memory and everything in our past influences our behavior. While this is not a " how to " manual for solving certain problems step by step with our children, it is a much deeper and longer lasting fix. It helps the reader to self examine and become the kind of parent they want to be instead of the kind of parent that they are programmed to be based on their family history.I think this is a fantastic book for parents that are serious about being the best people they can be for their children. I wish it was written 30+ years ago when I had my first child. If you are fairly intelligent and want to prepare yourself to be the best parent you can be ( any age child ) - do yourself and your kids a favor. Get the book. I wish they taught this stuff in school.

I loved how this book opened. It was about how our childhoods affect how we parent our children. Of course, we all know that, but sometimes we are subconsciously affected in ways we don't realize. Sometimes, we might actively try to correct our parents' wrongs without realizing the negative effects of that reaction. This book makes us more mindful of our actions. It's less of a parenting book (as in how to parent) than a book for understanding ourselves so we can be better parents. At the end of each chapter are exercises and discussion about the science behind it all. My mind numbed a little at times, so you can skip these sections if you want. About midway through the book, I started to feel like the authors droned on a little too long. I get it already; you've made your point. Now how do I put this info to good use? The last quarter of the book, we get some answers, though they are a little vague. There's never really a do it this way or try that. If you want hard core parenting advice, you won't find it here. I found the book useful, though, for making me more self-aware.

I do a lot of work in emotional health and trauma recovery and personally this has been THE biggest game changer of my parenting. It was incredibly easy for me to use my emotional health tools to analyze my child but she was still struggling no matter what I did. I ended up going to therapy JUST to figure out how I could mother such a hard kid and my therapist recommended this book. It is quite difficult for me to read and process but I am hopeful that as I process my own childhood trauma that slowly and steadily I can become a safe place for my daughter. Thank you Dr. Siegel.

This book sheds light on why we act and react in the way that we do when it comes to relationships with our children. It is a nice guide for putting your own life into perspective so that you can bond more deeply with your child. It has been eye opening for me. It is written in a somewhat text book style at a pretty high reading level. It’s very heavy on the neuroscience, which at times can be a tad bit painstaking to decipher and interpret meaning for folks who don’t have any formal scientific background or experience. It also says that it is not a “how to” book but a “how we” book and that is 100% accurate in my assessment. You won’t necessarily learn how to cope with raising your children, you will gain understanding as to why you tend to cope the way that you do cope. This understanding could be very helpful in helping you raise coherent, emotionally secure children. Since starting this book, my capacity for empathy and understanding for both my son and myself has grown immensely. My bottom line on this book is that it is good background knowledge and especially helpful for people who have a sense of unresolved issues from their own childhood. Wouldn’t recommend this as a first book to reach for if you are struggling with parenting issues however. It’s more for people who are looking for deeper resolution to problematic patterns in their parenting journey and for people who enjoy and appreciate neuroscience.

My dil had this book on her wish list and I couldn't refuse. She has been reading it and is really liking how the authors help you parent better based on "Drawing on stunning new findings in neurobiology and attachment research, they explain how interpersonal relationships directly impact the development of the brain, and offer parents a step-by-step approach to forming a deeper understanding of their own life stories, which will help them raise compassionate and resilient children." quote taken from the authors.

This book has been extremely helpful for me. I did not read the whole thing because it got a bit too slow about halfway through, but the first half is worth 5 stars. There are a lot of things that happened in my childhood that I would brush off as irrelevant to my life now, but when I really examine them and come to terms with the good & the bad that is when I know I can grow past them and be the parent that I want to be.I have been a gentle, attachment-oriented parent since having my first baby 6 years ago. But I found that I would sometimes get unbelievably angry at my children, completely out of proportion with the situation, and I couldn't control myself. I would lash out and scare them (though never physically hurt them). I didn't want to be this way, but I didn't know how to stop and to be frank it felt a little good... like I was getting something out when I was yelling at them. Reading this book helped me to understand where those flashes of anger came from. I came by them honestly, just as my parents did. But my parents never bothered to learn how to control themselves. I am now doing MUCH better. When I get angry I clench my fists and yell silently at the sky, then deal with my children in a more subdued way. Sometimes i tell them I am feeling angry, but I no longer scare the pants off them. And I really credit reading this book.

This book contained great explanations for why we fall into particular patterns and I did enjoy having the references to be able to dive in and study more, but I wanted more "how to" than "why" or "what" answers.

Review

"For outsize polymathic energy and accomplishment, Abdul-Jabbar — N.B.A. champion, cultural ambassador, author — rivals Conan Doyle himself." - New York Times"Abdul-Jabbar and Waterhouse have created a smart origin story for Mycroft that slots neatly onto the shelves next to the original canon." - Los Angeles Times "Holmesians will find much to appreciate in the novel’s depiction of a character whose mind is as keen as Sherlock’s." - Time.com"If you’re only aware of Abdul-Jabbar’s skill on the basketball court, get ready—this is an assured novel that fans of Holmes stories (old-school and new) will love." - Barnes and Noble "MYCROFT HOLMES is beautifully written and full of intrigue...while still managing to be a lot of fun.”- Robert Towne, Oscar-winning screenwriter of Chinatown"The book is extremely well-written and well-researched, with layers of sensory detail and filmic tableaux...Doylean Easter Eggs are also sprinkled throughout and are presented with a witty subtlety that will delight longtime fans...Mycroft Holmes is a good book and an engaging mystery for Sherlockians and non-Sherlockians alike, but it’s a particular delight for aficionados of the Doylean world. Here’s hoping Abdul-Jabbar and Waterhouse write many more." - Baker Street Babes“I’m proud to have worked with Kareem, my friend of many years, on this project! It adds an exciting, new dimension to the life of Sherlock Holmes, and Kareem's passion for history has given the story a new twist.” - Leslie S. Klinger, editor, The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes “Moving beyond the echo of big-time basketball's cheering multitudes, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has found an unlikely second career in the quietude of a writer's life.  In his latest literary effort, he indulges his longtime appreciation for the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and gives us a rousing mystery novel featuring Sherlock Holmes' older and smarter brother, Mycroft, while launching a new series of adventures.” - Gay Talese, author of A Writer’s Life"With this meticulously researched work, Abdul-Jabbar and Waterhouse have pulled off the near-impossible with MYCROFT HOLMES: given us a novel that will appeal to any fan of good storytelling, an instant classic in the Sherlockian pastiche genre, and a must-read for history buffs. If you love the Holmes brothers, you will love this book.  But more importantly, if you care about history and culture and passion and civil rights, you will love it all the more."- Lyndsay Faye, bestselling author, The Gods of Gotham"Basketball legend Abdul-Jabbar (Black Profiles in Courage) makes his triumphant adult fiction debut with an action yarn that fills in the backstory of Sherlock Holmes’s older and smarter brother, Mycroft. In 1870, the 23-year-old Mycroft, who has a reputation as a daredevil, is serving as a secretary at the War Office when word reaches London of a series of unusual deaths in Trinidad. Someone, or some thing, has been killing children and draining their blood. The locals believe the culprits are supernatural beings known as lougarou, who drain children of their blood, and douen, who leave highly unusual footprints near their victims. The tragic news stuns Mycroft’s fiancée, Georgiana Sutton, who immediately sails home to Trinidad. Disobeying her request to stay behind, Mycroft follows Georgiana to Trinidad, where he must exercise his intellect and his innate diplomatic skills to solve the crimes and remain alive. Sherlockians who relish the screen adventures of Cumberbatch and Downey will be particularly entertained." - Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Abdul-Jabbar, a Holmesian since his college days, joins forces with Waterhouse to offer a rousing mystery starring Sherlock’s older (and smarter) brother, Mycroft, a rising star in the British government. The action begins in 1870 London but quickly moves to Trinidad, where Mycroft’s closest friend, Cyrus Douglas, a native of the island, must travel to investigate what some believe is an infestation of douen—tiny supernatural characters who lead children into the clutches of werewolf-like lougarou. Mycroft joins his friend for the trip, and what the two find on arrival—after a near-fatal ocean crossing—isn’t supernatural but far more harrowing... The authors hit all the right notes here, combining fascinating historical detail with rousing adventure, including some cleverly choreographed fight scenes and a pair of protagonists whose rich biracial friendship, while presented realistically, given the era (Douglas must sometimes pose as a butler), is the highlight of the book. Yes, Douglas is a sort-of Watson, but a much brighter, more physical, more bantering version, an equal not a foil. Mystery fans will be eager to hear more from this terrific duo, who may well develop into a gaslit version of Robert B. Parker’s Spenser and Hawk."-Booklist (starred review)"The central conceit is audacious; Mycroft's sense of moral outrage is nicely reflective of the era; the historical detail is solid; and the period decorum is well-maintained throughout." - Kirkus Reviews"Clear space on your new fiction shelf for this slam-dunk of a debut novel. Cowritten by NBA all-star and author Abdul-Jabbar (What Color Is My World?) and screenwriter and producer Waterhouse, the team behind the NAACP and Telly Award–winning documentary On the Shoulders of Giants, this latest collaboration brings a fresh voice and broadened scope to the Holmes canon. Historical fiction and mystery fans will be the first to demand this title, but its mass appeal is undeniable." - Library Journal (starred review)The erudite Jabbar has managed to weave elements of his far flung interests into a fascinating mystery narrative. The briskly written book has a delicate woven plot that brings together such diverse elements as Trinidadian culture and folklore, the tobacco importation business in London,  and the usual Holmesian array of brightly obtuse knowledge and libertine philosophy that Sherlock fans enjoy— not to mention a plot that involves an elaborate scheme to bring slavery back to the Caribbean. By far the star of the novel is Holmes’ able accomplice Douglas—as compared to Watson, Douglas is portrayed as an equal instead of a foil. The careful dance of the friendship between the two men of different races, complicated by the laws and conventions of the era, is fascinating.  — Mike Sager, Esquire"Mycroft Holmes is a 300+ page origin story that nails it… And it’s got a solid mystery to boot." – Geek Dad"Jabbar and Waterhouse have concocted a smooth brew of dark mystery that, for all its gorgeous glossiness (such a lush yet reserved dust jacket), reads like part of the New Pulp movement. It’s a clever ret-conning of one of literature’s great worlds of mystery” - The Blood Shed"If you are looking for a mystery with suspenseful action, charming characters, fascinating relationships and fun twists and turns, then this is the novel for you." - Geek Hard Show"Sure to earn a place in the early canon of the Holmes brothers’ tales." - Hypable"Can this book, despite the cache the author may carry with him, stand on its own in the ever-growing, seemingly non-stop publication of all things Holmes-related? To that, I can answer a definitive yes." - Birth.Movies.Death "Mycroft Holmes has added a new wrinkle in the revered Holmes brothers’ fan fiction stories – the loner genius versus the collaborative genius – and the contrast is entertaining as it is illuminating." - Pop Mythology “Mycroft Holmes sets up its own tension-filled tale of revolt” - Pajiba "Rich with historical details and multicultural insights." - Manhattan Book Review  “It’s a fast-paced read, and it is far more emotional than I was expecting it to be” - Book Riot "This novel is an interesting and entertaining combination of mystery fiction and historical fiction with a tiny dash of elements found in horror fiction. This combination works well, because all of the elements are in perfect balance and the story flows effortlessly." - Rising Shadow  "it's so well written, with an intriguing hook, well developed characters, and a great mystery at the center of the story." - Never Anyone Else   “The aspect of racial inequality transforms “Mycroft Holmes” from a simple fan fiction into a powerful but subtle call to recognize the racial issues prevalent in society today.” - The BG news  "Um, guys. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote a Mycroft Holmes book. Yes, THAT Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. How awesome is this world we live in?" - Aint it Cool  "A clever and carefully written story that is surprisingly funny, notwithstanding its heavy topics ." - Pop Insomniacs“Suspenseful...compelling” - The Missourian “Mycroft Holmes is a fine addition to the canon – compelling, well-plotted, and firmly in possession of a social conscience.” - Austin Chronicle“Pitch Perfect” - Omnivoracious “well-written and tightly plotted and it features issues of race that we don’t typically see in Sherlock Holmes stories. The settings are detailed and immersive” - Fandom Post “A strong addition to the ever-growing Baker Street mythology.” - Blog Critics “Did a good job of presenting the different layers of the various societies in which Mycroft and Cyrus find themselves, and the ramifications those various levels have on each of them.” - Reviewing the Evidence

First Sentence: The old man had heard of them, of course.Young Mycroft Holmes is fresh out of Cambridge University, engaged to the beautiful Georgiana Sutton, who was raised in Trinidad, and working for the Secretary of State for War. Holmes’ good friend Cyrus Douglas, a free black also from Trinidad, receives word that the bodies of children are being found drained of blood. Georgiana suddenly departs for her home. Mycroft and Douglas decide to follow, never expecting the danger into which they are sailing. The book surprises us from the very beginning. The descriptions are very atmospheric and mysterious. And what, one might ask, are the douen and the lougarou? Fortunately, we do learn the answers quite soon. The author creates very visual descriptions and wonderful metaphors; “Horse and rider moved as if they knew every little knot and turn of Greater London. … All the while they nosed out the cleanest thoroughfares and most deserted byways, as if they and the city were gears in the noblest Swiss watch.” We are also presented with very exciting, action-filled scenes incorporating the sights, sounds, and smells of London. We are presented with a very clear sense of place and time. This is no placid Mycroft, but neither is he a particularly effective man of action. What we do see, very early on, are his skills of observation. It is fascinating observing the details of his observations to see to how he reaches his conclusions. This is a very different Mycroft than we’ve known before. He is young, inexperienced and has the weaknesses of youth. Yet the intellect is there. Douglas is a very interesting character and one who one feels could only have been written as well by Abdul-Jabbar. The story of his family is a sad and painful reminder of this country’s history. Douglas, at 10 years older, serves to provide the maturity that Mycroft lacks. The story has plenty of action, but also provides a lesson in history that certainly isn’t part of any ordinary curriculum. While most of us assume slavery ended after the Civil War, in fact it did not. We also learn the difference between indentured servants and slaves. The plot includes an excellent twist which is very well done and part of a very interesting secondary theme; “He is Prichard’s theory of moral insanity come to life,” he mused. “A human being devoid of the common thread of human decency.”“Mycroft Holmes” is a fascinating read on so many levels; history, action, and character—with a very satisfactory ending. It will be interesting to see whether this becomes a series.MYCROFT HOLMES (Hist Mys-Mycroft Holmes/Cyrus Douglas-London-1870/Victorian) – VGAbdul-Jabbar, Kareem and Anna Waterhouse – 1st Holmes bookTitan Books, Sept 2015

Thoroughly enjoyable. Anyone who likes Sherlock Homes stories should love this, but it is not just Sherlock with a new name. Mycroft does not exactly match previous views of Sherlock's older brother, but for the most part that was a good thing. This story was just new enough to keep interest up, but still keeps the style, twists, and turns we've come to love. The characters were three dimensional, interesting, and likable (as well as quirky). I think Kareem did a great job of updating an old favorite, and Mycroft's friend and companion Cyrus was a perfect addition. I really enjoyed him being more mature and quite adept in his own right. Watson made for good "comic relief", but Cyrus was an equal and quite believable partner in the adventure. If anyone in the story could have used a little more development, it would be Mycroft's love interest. There were just too many questions left open as to why she did what she did. Where the two men seemed very well filled out, she seemed more of an afterthought. In that one area, there is some room for improvement, but I'm still giving it a five star rating for all the pleasure I found in reading it.

Well-written but did not at all feel like the Mycroft Holmes from the original Doyle novels. Mycroft was supposed to be even smarter than Sherlock, just disinclined to chase criminal cases like his younger brother and not at all physical. The Mycroft character in this novel could not have been further from that description - although he is often referred to as brilliant by his friends, he never demonstrates this to the extent Sherlock does in other tales. This was a mildly interesting mystery novel but in my opinion not remotely a Holmesian tale.

As a huge fan of Holmes, and an avid reader of all high-quality pastiches I can get my hands on, I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised by this book. The story was strong, the characters were interesting, and the plot had a decent pace, and it appears the authors did a lot of work researching the historical background of their story. If I have any complaint at all, it was that the two main characters, Mycroft and his friend and companion Cyrus Douglas, are almost too noble, which pushes them at times to be a little one-dimensional. The authors have tried very hard to create a partnership dynamic that you as a reader will care about, but as yet "Mycroft Holmes and Mr. Douglas" doesn't have the strength and depth of "Sherlock Homes and Dr. Watson".But the highest praise I think anyone can give a book is that they wish there was even more to read when it comes to an end, and for me that was absolutely the case here. Mr. Abdul-Jabbar & Ms. Waterhouse - I'm hoping you have a sequel in the works, please?

After seeing this book at Antropologie, I got it here for much cheaper. I got this book for my friend who is very much into fashion. Obviously this is more of a fun book and not the be-all end-all on fashion topics. Just the illustrations make the book... they're pretty amazing and creative!

This book has great illustrations. The subject matter is very fun and it is great for kids. Anyone who likes fashion will have a great time reading this book to their kids. It is a great gift as well.

One of my favorite books for my daughter

Given as a gift to my friends 4 year old daughter. We think soon she'll love it as much as we do! Really cute.

My daughter, who is 4.5 picked this book up because it is pink [her favorite color] and has a woman adorned in ruffles on the cover [and a fashionable young girl next to her]. The title was a winner for me: "When Royals Wore Ruffles", and we both could not wait to read the book.Basically, the book is a sort of alphabet book for young fashionistas, but it is more than that. It also covers the history of fashion, tracing important fashion trends through the centuries, but simplified and presented in a fun manner with the aid of whimsical full-color illustrations. E.g. "G is for Go-Go Boots!" and there is a brief explanation as to how the MOD look came about, even mentioning the first supermodel [?] Twiggy. Some of the entries are laugh out loud -"K is for the King's Knickers and Knees" which then goes on to explain about the Peacock Age [when men's fashion was more dominant and flashier than women's].Incredibly informative, yet never ponderous, this is a fun book for not just young girls and boys fascinated by fashion, but even older readers. As an adult, I found this book not only entertaining, but informative as well. Highly recommended!

Just finished When Royals Wore Ruffles by Chesley McLaren. This is a wonderful story, rich with Project Runway vocabulary that any young fashionista will need. It struck me that I have read hundreds of sports books, filled with sport terms, but this was the first fashion vocabulary book I had seen. The boy based sport books are rich in vocabulary that helps them to manage the sports world but what about the girly girls. This fashion based book does the same thing for the girly girls among us. I highly recommend this treasure of a book for a great mommy and daughter read that can also lead to a wardrobe lesson in your clothes closet. All fun!

A super-fun way to mix fashion and a little history in a format easy enough for children to enjoy and absorb! My daughter who isn't overly fashion-oriented asks to read this book with me over and over again! I have even heard her repeat little facts from the book to others, too cute!

This book is absolutely adorable and such a fun way for a little girl to learn her ABC's, especially if she's a little fashionista. I saw it in Anthropologie in Chicago and had to get it for my cousin's daughter. The book stores didn't have it in stock yet, it was just published in January. This book is probably best once a child has a basic grip on ABC's, not as a starting point.

While clicking on Look Inside I saw something interesting. To transmit the results of flipping a fair coin, you need to send one bit (1=heads, 0=tails). But a biased coin that is heads 75% of the time only requires 0.81 bits per flip. Intriguing, so I bought the book, and really liked it. The author explains things well, and uses examples from other areas of physics to explain difficult topics like entropy. I admit I skimmed the later chapters dealing with noise, and skipped the chapters on language and music entirely.PS: to solve the 'biased coin' issue (since the author doesn't) just search for 'coding theory biased coin' and see a concise explanation at stackexchange.

This is the missing manual that neither Claude Shannon wrote nor even Warren Weaver, who wrote the kinder, nicer, gentler introduction/annotations to Infomation Theory. A gift from the late 40's along with hoola-hoops and frisbees. And it is still finding new applications in various ancillary sciences! Much like Darwin's Natural Selection (Evolution), it kind of drips into everything, like an acid. It is a major pillar of science along with Relativity and Quantum Mecchanics coming out of the strife ridden 20th century. This book goes Weaver, in the 1949 book form of Shannon's paper where Weaver was tapped to write a mostly prose explanation. The theory is both simple and complex. A triumph that enabled the information revolution. If you want to understand this critical "theory." Read this book, or mine! Which is titled "Information Theory. Another way of knowing." and will be released on Amazon soon. But this book is a must for any budding communications engineer.

I have been working my way slowly through this book, as it reads like a typical non-fiction STEM text. Therefore, I have not completed it, yet. Even with a physics teaching background and two degrees in physics, I have to go slowly to fully grasp some of the esoterica, although it is enlightening and brings deeper understanding to many ideas in computer and internet communications to say nothing of "old fashioned" telegraphy and telephony. It is geared toward a more popular audience, but if math and physics is not of great interest to you, it may not be your cup of tea.Beyond the core sciences students of languages might be guided toward new perspectives on languages in general whether spoken, written, symbolic, encrypted (codex), DNA, etc.

I got this on a whim (Dover books are cheap) as I was starting an Information Theory Course. This does not provide a substitute on that kind of text, but it does provide more explained approach for the less technically inclined. Whereas most information theory books are so equation heavy they appear to be written in Romulan, this explains what things mean, rather than directly proving how to get there, which helps tie things together. That said, it's like a straight narrative versus an instruction manual, and makes an excellent supplement (or good general purpose reading, if that's your inclination).Decent algebra knowledge is required as background, and that's about it.

I wish every topic had a book like this one to introduce newcomers.Information theory is itself fairly interesting, but I found that the author used intriguing examples from a broad variety of disciplines to capture the reader's attention. He also has something of a self-deprecating writing style that will bring a smile to your face once or twice in each chapter.I loved the discussion of language and letter frequency, and it was even more interesting since now easily accessible tools exist (like Google's ngram) which allow you to explore some of the data and concepts first hand. I've explored various error correction/detection schemes online to gain a cursory understanding - this book did far more for me thanks to the simple and straightforward examples. I feel confident I could write my own (albeit basic) error correction code now, thanks solely to this book. I admit that the n-dimensional hypersphere-based code correction is somewhat beyond an easy implementation for me, but still, the explanation is engaging and I feel confident that I can explain the basics of geometrical error correction codes on a high level, which will be useful to me in my course of work.Anyhow, this kind of book, with enough depth to be challenging for someone with a basic science background yet still casual enough to read a bit here and there without getting lost, is a rare find. Well worth the very reasonable price. I wager that even someone with little interest in science or math could find some very interesting gems here. Have a deamy day.
