This is a great book. I got it today & I've already read the lot. I can already tell that this will be easy for me to follow, especially compared to a lot of the other visual arts techniques books I have read. Even if you're keen on digital art I believe that learning to use the raw materials is fundamentally important to being a good artist IMHO.I am not a beginner when it comes to drawing but I've had a big hiatus from drawing so I'm looking to review & update my style. I've decided to go the "How To Draw Manga" book series route. As far as colouring is concerned I used other mediums to Copic/Similar markers so I'm very much a beginner when it comes to using Copics/Similar markers. Most adults & visual arts student will find this easy to follow but I think an absolute beginner would still be ok with this.I've searched high & low for decent Copic colouring books & DVD's specifically for Manga & so far this is best resource I've found. Most Copic DVD's/Books tend to be specific on rendering for products (technical drawing) which can help but this is a solid manga focused colouring book. This won't give you everything. I'll be searching for additional books/DVD's when I'm done practising everything though this one but it is definitely a solid place to start.A word on materials described in this book. Copics are widely available but you could use other markers & what is explained in the book still applies. Don't freak out that there are Japan-only materials or other materials that are hard to get. If you get too bogged down in getting the exact stuff listed in this book you'll never get around to colouring. You don't need "Too/Copic brand specific tracing paper" either for instance, any arts store can provide other tracing paper that does the same thing. There are always alternate materials that can get the job done just as well - so be a bit flexible. If you don't have much of an arts background then google/wiki the material from the book you're looking for & print off a description of what it is, go to your local arts store & I'm sure they'll find you a good alternative or way to get around it.There are a couple of pictures showing a little skin but there are no uncovered female genitalia or nipples showing. I have 3 male & 2 female cousins in primary school that I would lend this to without any worries. However, I was born during that disgusting period of time known as the 80's & watched cartoons through the 90's which had a reputation of letting some things go - so I may be a little more desensitised. I have taken two photos, one of each girl & you can make up your own mind as to whether it is appropriate or not.All & all this book was printed quite a few years ago but still very relevant.
This book provided common sense instruction on proper use of art pens, care, customization, guidance on how the art pens interact with various types of paper, and a handful of advanced tools, mixed media ideas, tips and techniques.The art examples push the border of good taste at times, and the instruction is from teachers using advanced English as their second language; be prepared to read a few sentences a time or two (or three) before the “eureka†light flares on.
