Over the years, I have visited Costa Rica several times. (It's a favorite place for me.) While I have no plans to ever move there, I found this book particularly informative as to what it would be like to live there fulltime. It does not focus on "tourist concerns". It instead focuses on what is important to daily life there. It points out both joys and annoyances - and offers some very-helpful advice.I found the text very heart-felt. The author obviously loves living there fulltime. And he intersperses the text with some personal-photos and free-form poems! His opinions are obviously subjective - but, through them, one gets a real feel for his personal experiences there. Be sure to not overlook the "Illustrative Snapshots of Tico Life" at the end of his book!
My husband and I are contemplating moving to Costa Rica. Bosque’s book hits all the key areas one should consider before making a decision. It’s written in an easy, conversational tone, as though you are sitting on his veranda listening to his stories. His love for the country and his admiration for its people resonates without overwhelming minutiae.
This is a brief history of, and commentary on the experiences of the author about his life in Atenas, the town in Costa Rica reputed to have the best climate in the world.After reading this fairly short, critical and sometimes funny book, readers are unlikely to look at the glossy publicity about Costa Rica in quite the same way. As promised, the author delivers some incisive commentary spiced with practical and useful tips for the future resident.The book ends rather abruptly and one is left with the sensation that the author has much more to say. How about a sequel?
Unlike some of the books or articles you will read about Costa Rica, Tarantulas in the Pool gives the reader a real view of this fabulous country from the eyes of someone who has traveled the world and settled in Atenas, Costa Rica over 6 years ago. Although much of the writing is about Atenas, there is great information about the Pacific and Caribbean coasts and other areas as well. Read about day to day life, where to buy food and clothing, the relaxed, un-rushed lifestyle and the friendly people. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's writings, which included humor and compassion for his adopted homeland.
A friendly and easily understood description of life in Costa Rica. The author has done an outstanding job of explaining the good, the not so good, and what to expect if moving to this beautiful country. A definite read for anyone considering moving or even visiting!
This book is a nice snapshot of daily life in Costa Rica and also explains the author’s reasons for choosing Atenas, Costa Rica as his new home. The author shares his suggestions for making the move and building a new life in a comfortable relaxed style that reflects the easy going culture of Costa Rica. I highly recommend it for anyone considering a new life in Costa Rica who needs help visualizing what it might be like to make your dream come true.
This is a most enjoyable read! If you have ever thought of moving to and living in Costa Rica, as an expat, the book is must reading. Beyond the basics you might find in other books or from other sites this book lends itself to a real life feel of what living in and loving Costa Rica is all about.
Excellent personal account of the author's life in Atenas and attitudes/information on Costa Rica. You can learn a lot reading this book, and it's great fun as well.
