Frank D. Luna's Direct3D books have been the standard ever since the release of his first in 2003. While his second book was a fairly extensive rewrite focusing on the introduction of shaders, The DirectX 10 book is a fairly direct translation of the DirectX 9 shader approach book. While there is not a great amount of new content focusing on new shader effects, this book does a great job of translating the material to DirectX 10. The geometry shader chapters do provide new content and explains the topics well. The one disappointment is in the removal of some chapters from the last book. There are several that are missing that would provide more value and I do not understand their being missing. While DirectX has been updated to version 11, the DirectX 10 feature set still provides a good basis for DirectX 11. When Luna releases the update for DirectX 11 it will undoubtedly be of the same quality as his previous works.

Most outstanding graphics programming book I had ever read. I got this book in June 2011 and after studying it in detail, was much better informed about graphics technology in general and Microsoft DirectX specifically. Frank Luna explains these topics well and his writing is superb.When I read the book, I was using technologies that were based on DirectX. Today, not so much. Regardless, the description of graphics concepts as presented by Frank Luna can provide some strong insight into graphics technology. If we could see a book from this author related to OpenGL, that may be a great next step.

I haven't read all of it yet but I have worked my way into it pretty far and i have to say, this is a great book. I started learning DirectX10 through a different book and it just threw all the information of 3D programming at you in 300 pages. This book is fantastic, it goes into perfect detail of why you should use that style, or what a specific line of code does instead of saying, like it does so many times in other books ("You don't need to understand what it's doing, you just need to understand that every program has it") or ("Just add it in, the technical information behind it is beyond the scope of this book"). Frank Luna has a way of explaining something so it makes sense but you haven't lost interest midway through the explanation.The math prerequisite in the first two chapters of the book is pretty strait forward, just make sure you have a graphing calculator handy for some of the vector algebra. It's pretty basic material that goes a long way like COS and SIN. The actual programming aspect and program tutorials are fantastic. He holds your hand through the steps so its very easy to understand, and the end of chapter exercises are great. They really bring everything you were taught through the chapter with a little bit of a challenge. You'll definitely be challenged throughout the book but nothing you won't be able to handle.Overall, I think if your beginning DirectX 10 or 11 this is the book to get. It covers the math concepts you need to know and walks you through the basics, and intermediate parts of Direct3D. The shipping was fast, it was faster the the estimated shipping date and was packaged very delicately. To be specific it was in a "Medium Flat Rate" box from USPS filled with Packing peanuts and the book was wrapped in plastic.

While I am only halfway through this book, I must say it is superb. I had no previous knowledge on DirectX and it is being a great introduction. The text is clear, the code is neat, and the examples at the end of every chapter are complete and entertaining. What I like the most is the author's verbosity on the maths; he explains how and why everything works, from projection matrices to lighting calculations. This provides a better understanding of the subject and makes coding easier afterward. For those not too used to vector and matrix algebra, the introductory chapters cover just that. Also, even though Win32 programming knowledge is assumed, the author has included a brief tutorial in appendix A which covers the topics he touches during the first chapters.Another aspect to point out is the way the chapters are laid out. Every chapter so far starts off by shooting you with some theory and providing ad-hoc code snippets. This gives you the chance to put everything together yourself and then compare your work with the author's. In my opinion this is the best approach the author could have taken. By the way, the author's code actually works, so you won't have to spend any time reverse engineering faulty sample code.In conclusion, this is a must read for anyone getting started on dx10!

Having some experience with DX9, I wanted a text that clearly explained the capabilities of DX10. I previously had purchased and used Wendy Jones' and Peter Walsh's books on DX10. I was disappointed in them because they never bothered to take on the topic of window resizing. Why?Frank Luna's latest is a welcome treat. I would have liked to have seen it sooner, but better late than never.Those readers fearful of vector and matrix arithmetic and algebra will undoubtedly stiffen up because Luna starts with these prerequisites. Such readers should try to tough it out. It will be worth it. Luna's treatment is thorough. Get through it, but with thorough understanding.I've been through Chapters 1-6, and every paragraph and example program has been worthwhile. Good work, Frank.

My Hepatologist started talking transplant right from the start, I had no clue what so ever about this. I only know that you are given a liver from a donor and it must match certain factors. Although I'm not a professional sound engineer, I very much enjoyed this book and have had fun tinkering with some software I've recently downloaded for my iMac. I can well imagine it would be very productive for someone with the proper equipment and a small studio.In terms of the writing and layout, I don't think he could have done a better job presenting his tips. The directions were even quite easy for me to follow - a total novice. I downloaded a copy when he had it available as a promotional item, but it would be worth the cost for anyone interested in sound recording and small studio work. This is a highly recommended product for amateur or pro. I've had fun with it.

I am in audio mixing for more than 10 years. I also love reading about mixing. I've read dozens of books. THIS ONE is special. It goes straight to the essence. Author has a real talent explaining things, getting straight to the point and making EVERYTHING very clear. For a beginner - it is a goldmine! For the advanced - it is very pleasant refreshening of a perspective! I knew most of tips. Nevertheless, there was something special in this book that made me love mixing even more and find anew techniques that I was already using. Therefore I wholeheartedly recommend this one to everyone in mixing business! :-)

I find these tip very helpful. The tips mentioned are in plain English so they're easy enough to understand and are short enough so you can just read about it and then go and put it into action.

He’s made that easy by briefly describing each technique, why and when it’s useful, how it works, followed by a “Do It’ section that tells you precisely how to achieve it. It’s a winning format that’s just as punchy and illuminating as his mixes. Highly recommended.

Would recommend to anyone looking to add some easy to digest tips to getting interesting artistic sounds out of your recordings. I read the book on my kindle while riding the train in bits and pieces and can easily reference certain sections in my studio for trying out examples.

LOVED this book! What a great resource to have when mixing. I love how Amos gets right to the situation and his tips/procedures. This is a MUST HAVE for any mixer/producer who is trying to get over a hump, deal with a problem or wants to improve their mix. Would love to see one on Mastering or recording techniques.

Many ideas to try. Some are well known while others are new to this home recordist.

5 STAR book, tremendous read and research!! Whole book is awesome!!

This book appears to be an accumulation of a lifetime of work by Dr. Petrovich. He is careful, methodical, and scholarly in his work. For me, it is not a fast read--but one to be digested. He has done an excellent job in sharing his research in this book. I appreciate Him documenting his research, which helps me in my research of studying the meanings of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet--which I have been working on for 5 years. He has provided some recent understanding of Hebrew and the Alphabet letters (including their meaning) based on Archeological finds.I highly recommend this book to those who are interested in the study of Hebrew.

Douglas Petrovich has a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, with a major in Syro-Palestinian archaeology, and minors in both ancient Egyptian language and ancient Near Eastern religions. Petrovich is the former academic dean and professor at Novosibirsk Biblical-Theological Seminary and currently teaches Ancient Egypt at Wilfrid Laurier University. He is the author of numerous academic, peer-reviewed articles and the groundbreaking new book The World’s Oldest Alphabet: Hebrew as the Language of the Proto-consonantal Script (Carta Jerusalem, 2016).The World’s Oldest Alphabet is divided into four sections: (1) background matters to the proto-consonantal inscriptions, (2) the inscriptions of the period of Egypt’s Middle Kingdom, (3) the inscriptions of the period of Egypt’s New Kingdom, and (4) concluding thoughts. Most readers will do well to spend time in the initial section of the book. Petrovich does a phenomenal job introducing the issues and methodology of the book, including the placement of the first alphabet among the earliest written scripts, the Semitic language of the proto-consonantal scripts, and the methodological information the reader will need to follow along.Petrovich presents 16 proto-consonantal inscriptions: (1) the Caption on Sinai 115, (2) Sinai 337, (3) Wadi el-Hôl 1, (4) Wadi el-Hôl 2, (5) Lahun Bilingual Ostracon, (6) Sinai 376, (7) Sinai 345a and Sinai 345b, (8) Sinai 346a and Sinai 346b, (9) Sinai 349, (10) Sinai 351, (11) Sinai 353, (12) Sinai 357, (13) Sinai 360, (14) Sinai 361, (15) Sinai 375a, and (16) Sinai 378. Each inscription is addressed individually as Petrovich walks the reader through the necessary background information, the translation methodology, and the potential historical value of the inscriptions. Readers will find numerous full-color maps, photographs, and illustrations of the inscriptions. The visual aspect of the book complements the meticulously detailed information that Petrovich provides, and readers will appreciate every page. Furthermore, Petrovich includes a number of helpful supplemental items, such as an alphabetic chart of proto-consonantal Hebrew, and index material that provides additional information concerning the original letters of proto-consonantal Hebrew, grammatical guides for proto-consonantal Hebrew, and a chronological chart of relevant ancient Egyptian dynasties.The World’s Oldest Alphabet is fascinating. Petrovich has broken academic ground that few have been willing to walk, and done so while yielding faithful witness to the biblical narrative. One of the most exciting, and subsequently controversial findings of the study, is the explicit mention of three biblical figures: (1) Asenath, (2) Ahisamach, and (3) Moses. Hence, not only has Petrovich claimed to have uncovered the oldest alphabet, he also has claimed to have discovered the oldest (1842-1446 BCE) mention of Moses and others. Of course, Petrovich is not without his critics, and for good reason. If The World’s Oldest Alphabet is accurate (and Petrovich presents a convincing case), then Petrovich could be liable for one of the most significant archaeological realizations in the last century. It fits the biblical narrative and further establishes the reliability of the biblical record.The World’s Oldest Alphabet is detailed and judicious in its research and presentation, and readers will benefit greatly from Petrovich’s efforts. This is an academic work with a particular audience in mind. That said, while it may require more time to read than anticipated, it could be easily understood by a trained or interested layperson. The thesis is simple, explanation is clear, and the implications are enormous. Critics will inevitably argue that Petrovich found that which he was intending to find, but the meticulous work done therein appears to demonstrate otherwise. This isn’t to say that Petrovich deserves (or will get) wholesale support from every reader. It is simply an acknowledgement that Petrovich has done the necessary work to substantiate his conclusions, and for that reason The World’s Oldest Alphabet: Hebrew as the Language of the Proto-consonantal Script comes strongly recommended!

This is a fantastic book! The author knows his stuff and it clearly shows. I also like Petrovich's approach to the data. He is very meticulous in his details. Not only does he decipher each letter/symbol one by one but at every point he mentions how other scholars prior to his translations would read or interpret each proto-consonantal letter. Some parts of the book can be very difficult to understand if one lacks knowledge of basic Hebrew grammar. Personally, I only understood most of it because I have been studying Hebrew formally for about a year now. With that said, knowing Hebrew or Middle Egyptian is not a requirement to understand the author's basic points, and of course, each inscription has a corresponding English translation to aid readers who are non-experts. In short, any and everyone can benefit from this book, especially those who are willing to do a little extra homework.One downside about this book is that some of the inscriptions that the author translates do not include any actual photos of the stones and engravings themselves. Also many of these can be difficult to find online and so the reader, at this point in time, is left to rely only on the author's drawings. In other words the reader must have “faith” that Petrovich is interpreting and rendering each symbol/letter correctly. Still though, the inscriptions that do include photos with legible letters are enough to demonstrate the author's thesis sufficiently. For me personally, I thought Sinai 375a was the most compelling to demonstrate the proto-consonantal script as distinctly Hebrew because it includes a proper name unique only to the book of Exodus. Petrovich builds a solid case that a proper name should be read on this inscription because it is followed by an Egyptian Hieroglyph (the tongue of an ox) which means “Overseer.” And as is typical with the Middle Egyptian language it is usually followed by the title of an administrative position, and then by the name of the individual holding that position. Therefore the evidence is compelling that we are dealing with a Hebrew proper name here. It is the author's reading that this is the same name found in the book of Exodus. This name uses only 6 Hebrew letters, which if read in any modern Hebrew Bible is as follows: Aleph-Het-Yod-Samek-Mem-Kaf. When translated into English this name is Ahisamach. (Exodus 31:6) Petrovich in the appendix to his book does a good job of showing how each of these symbols on the inscription (which the early Israelites borrowed them all from Egyptian Hieroglyphs) corresponds to the modern letters named above. Perhaps the most debatable is the author's choice to choose a fish symbol to be representative of the “S” sound and therefore corresponding to the modern Samek. This is because scholars have been divided on this issue in the past, with some electing to transliterate this as the letter “D” The reason being is that the eastern Semitic word for “fish” is the term “Dgn.” Even the specific Hebrew word for fish is "dag." However, Petrovich convincingly demonstrates that the early Israelites were in fact using this symbol to remind them of something that stinks. Dead fish along the banks of the Nile were known to produce an unpleasant smell. Therefore the fish symbol reminded them of the Hebrew word “Sarah” which means to stink. And so this letter makes the “S” sound. Interesting enough, the Egyptian word which means “to cause to stink” includes the K5 fish determinative. The conclusion to read “S” is also supported by the fact that the Egyptian word for “corpse” also includes the symbol of a fish and of course, most convincingly, all the other inscriptions can be translated successfully when Petrovich reads “S” for them, and cannot be reasonably translated when “D” is read.All in all, the inscription reads as follows: “The overseer of minerals, Ahisamach. The one having being elevated is weary to forget."In summary, I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the reliability of biblical history. However, due to the polarizing nature of the topic this book is expected to be scrutinized for a while. And rightly so! This book is so paradigm shifting it will require the work of many experts to judge it's contents accordingly. Christopher Rollston and others have already begun that task. The author himself, as of this point in time, has done a good job at responding to negative and critical evaluations of his work in my opinion. But only the passage of time will reveal the full strength of this new paradigm. The author himself acknowledges this fact in his introduction. Also the present writer of this amazon review realizes that even the words above should be taken with caution until more time and more work has been diligently achieved. With that said, I am grateful to the author for the immense time and effort he has put into this endeavor, and I am especially thankful for him honoring my request to send me additional photos of Sinai 375a so that I could analyze myself. This was such a blessing.Lastly, the only thing I can say is “let the debates begin!”

The recipes are easy to make, once you procure the appropriate ingredients which can only be found at an Asian supermarket that also has a Filipino section.The suggested beer to pair with each recipe is a nice touch.

Just got back from our annual winter trip to the Philippines and discovered this book. Filipino food has never had the proper recognition for the wonderful mix of flavors and textures it features. Buy this book and you'll be the top chef at your next party. And they carry well to pot-lucks and picnics.

This is a great new book! The day it arrived I tried the deviled eggs and a beer pairing and was so thrilled. This is a great book of new ideas on small bites with incredible tastes. As a guy who enjoys beer, and who enjoys food, this is great new stuff. Author Marvin’s explanations on the techniques, the touches and the details to make the recipient work out read easily and clearly. The tasty dishes, matched with a wide field of brews and the whys that bring them together make interesting and thought provoking reading for any guy trying to entertain! A real great find!

Fun and delicious party food. The recipes are really easy. Major flavor for minimum effort. You’ll need to go to a specialty Asian market for some of the ingredients, but most are available at a very average grocery store down the street. He gives beer pairings for everything. Love that feature. I didn’t realize the author was a contributor on Serious Eats. Yeah, gotta keep my eye out for his stuff on there now.I’d never had fermented shrimp paste before and that’s one of the magic ingredients in the book. I’m in love. It makes dishes have that extra something in a similar way to fish sauce or anchovies. If you’ve never purchased it before, it’s just labeled shrimp paste. It doesn’t actually say fermented. I confirmed with the guy at my store. They had a few different kinds. I just picked one that was labeled product of the Philippines.The book is really colorful. The only thing I didn’t love is that the pages are pen-repellent and I make notes all over books. If you do, too, a fine tip Sharpie works beautifully. Boom – solved.My thoughts and pics on the dishes we tried:1) Quick Caldereta Chili – p 84. This is a perfect dish to illustrate how awesome that fermented shrimp paste is. You know what chili tastes like, so when you get that bite with that extra something, that’s the fermented shrimp paste. We love chili in this house, and this is a terrific one.2) Fried Green Mangoes – p 68 with Garlic Bagoong Aioli – p 29. These are fantastic! There’s a lot of similarity to fried green tomatoes. The coating is a panko/corn meal blend that gives a very satisfying crunch. The garlic aioli has that fermented shrimp paste in it. I think this one is winner of book for us.3) Beer-and-Spam Mac and Cheese – p 88. Okay, we loved the mac and cheese. The beer added to the depth of flavor, and the blend of cheeses is terrific. The evaporated milk makes it really creamy. That Spam, though. I just can’t get on board. Two of us gave it a no way, one teen thought it was okay, and my husband loved it.4) Marinated Chicken Skewers with Shrimp Paste Rub – p 104. These are great. Super juicy and flavorful. It gets marinated all day then a dry rub right before the grill.5) Pineapple Pigs in a Blanket – p 78. These are awesome. I used little smoked sausages. The jammy tropical sweetness and heat made a great sauce inside the spring rolls. His beer commentary was particularly interesting on this one, noting highlighting the citrus notes and clearing frying oil from the palate. Good stuff.6) Beef Skewers with Citrus and Onions – p 98. Nice steak party bites.7) Pork Meatballs with Spicy Coconut Sauce – p 56. There’s a double coconut punch from coconut milk in the meatballs and sauce, and they’re cooked in coconut oil. This one has a little spiciness to it. He has you dial that up or down to your liking by adjusting how much Thai pepper you garnish with.Some other dishes I have flagged to try: Spicy Deviled Eggs with Crispy Bagoong Breadcrumbs – p 48 * Sea Salt and Vinegar Peanuts – p 50 * Grilled Tomato and Green Onion Skewers on Toast – p 52 * Queso De Bola Grilled Cheese with Jam and Shrimp Paste – p 55 * Filipino Salad Crepes – p 60 * Tofu and Caviar with Fish Sauce and Calamansi Caramel – p 61 * Chicken-Fried Eggplant – p 71 * Grilled Coconut and Lemongrass Shrimp – p 100 * Heavenly Beer and Peanut Brittle – p 110 * Beer, Calamansi, and Coconut Creamsicles – p 113 * Sweet Purple Yam and Coconut Churros – p 114*I received a copy to explore and share my thoughts.

What does it mean to be human? After you find out that everyone but one guy, a complete nutcase who intends to blow the rest of humanity up so he can be the official Last Man, are you more human...or less?And can you stop him?...So this was a lot of hard SF on the order of The Martian, although probably not quite as engineer-centric. But the style was much more like Roadside Picnic or Stanislaw Lem than it was your typical sci-fi writing, which gave it a heightened flavor. A philosopher's book with a ticking time bomb. There's a plot twist that I don't want to give away, but that pleased me very much with the core story. Can people change their minds, really? Truly? Blissfully, yes.

I truly enjoy Jason Dias' storytelling, and this is my favorite book by him to date. His writing is tight in this novel. It's emotional and gripping and ultimately full of hope, and chock-full of the complications that arise when starting a new society on a new world while watching the world of old die before your eyes. It ties in nicely with two earlier books, What Hope Wrought and Shooting Blanks, set in this story's past, though it's not an official sequel. I would, however, love to see a sequel to this book. This new world is rife with possibility.

This book is well written, with few grammatical errors. The idea behind it is reasonably well thought out. Thus, I give it 3 stars for those factors. But it simply is not to my taste, as it is dark and quite depressing. Earth has almost entirely fallen to its own violence, and a few survivors live on Mars. They are generationally split with a few born there on the red planet. Although the author throws a few small hints of hope into the end of the novel mostly it is a slog through dismal endings. This is not a space opera, neither is it really a hard science sci-fi, and it is not an exploration nor first contact. It is meant I think to be a novel about human weakness and isolation, almost a lost forever in the wilderness without any real hope. I would love to see this author write sci-fi full of optimism and possibility. I would definitely read that, because the author is talented.

All young people think they're different from their parents until they realize they're fundamentally not. Until they learn that there are some things, some needs, some emotions, that all people in the known universe share and some secrets within dark isolation that maybe should not be kept. Confronting mortality at the hands of a madman with no real way to stop him can make a person re-examine their priorities in a hurry. Finding Life on Mars is a poignant story of finding love, truth, solidarity, freedom, and oneself, set against the tense backdrop of surviving in an unforgiving alien environment while a ticking time bomb threatens to wipe out the very last of humanity.

What a fascinating read.I love and respect Dias' nonfiction work so much. I couldn't wait to see the world he imagined when life on Earth ends and a new world has to be developed on a planet so different than our own. What evolves in the story is more than those imaginings, though. Dias delivers a seamless blend of philosophical questions about what it means to be human, with characters trying to empathize with others whose emotional expression is different than their own, and a gripping plot where the threat of being destroyed is equally as tense as the struggle for survival.Highly recommended!

Finding Life On Mars is much more than a science fiction novel, although it satisfies most excellently in that regard. It is a delicate, tender, thoughtful examination of what it means to be human, what it means to love, and what it means to live. Dias manages to draw the reader swiftly and inescapably into the mind of what for most neurotypical readers should feel "other," and flips the construct so that outside is in, and inside is a wilderness, baffling and unmappable. Tense, gripping, action-packed and yet deeply emotional, this book is guaranteed to rivet the reader and linger long in the mind.

A story of what it means to be human, even if you don't feel you are. The science is fascinating, but the personal interactions and differences are more so. The main character/narrator is compelling. It's about relationships, understanding, adaptation, and survival in a harsh environment. A story with heart and a ticking clock.

This novel was painful to read. Cathartic. It hurt but I couldn't stop. The humanity held within and the ridiculously stern fight against it had me cheering for all involved. Bravo to the author, and to all people who struggle to know what is right.
