I purchased a bread machine so we could start eating healthier breads. I wish I'd read through all the reviews before purchasing this book so I would have read the warnings about gluten in the recipes.. I was really excited to get this book, but so disappointed when I started flipping through the recipes and kept seeing gluten in every single recipe! The only ones that don't have gluten are the few recipes for gluten free breads in the book.. Gluten is one of the biggest things we want to cut out, so obviously, I won't be using any in these recipes.. Not sure how the breads will turn out without it, but I'll try at least one.. I had purchased a Betty Crocker bread machine book and there isn't one recipe in that book that calls for Gluten.. I'm not really sure why the author of this book feels it's so important to add to all the recipes, but if you're like me and want to cut Gluten out of your diet as much as possible, skip this book and purchase the Betty Crocker bread machine cook book..

Yes, w book is packed with lots of recipes for your bread machine, but should you buy it? If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't buy it. Although the recipes are great, I just wanted basic bread machine recipes. If all you want are basic bread recipes, the King Arthur Flour website has a wide variety of bread and dough recipes available for FREE. If, however, you want a larger variety of recipes and more in depth explanations of the art of bread-making, this is the book for you.

This cookbook has made me a successful breadmaker in quick order. I made 2 recipes that came with my Oster breadmaker recipe book, but when I received this book, I've only used recipes from it. It is 600+ pages of recipes & info necessary for successful breadmaking, even at 8500 ft where I live. The author talks about bread machines, ingredients, techniques, she walks you thru your 1st loaf, using a starter, delay timer, high altitude baking, troubleshooting & how to fix problems.The recipes are arranged as: Daily Breads: White & Egg Breads; Earth's Bounty: Whole Wheat, Whole Grain & Specialty Flour Breads; Traditional Loaves: Country & Sourdough Breads; All Kinds of Flavors: Made with Garden Produce, Orchard & Dairy; Pizzas & other Flatbreads; Sweet Loaves: Chocolate, Fruit & Other; No-Yeast Quick Breads; Jams, Preserves & Chutneys; Appendix 1: Crumbs, Croutons, Crostini & Toasted Appetizers; Appendix 2: Spreads, Butters, Cheeses & Veggies to eat with your Bread! How's that for all-encompassing!The tabs I've put in my book for quick access (I haven't bought bread since I got my machine & this book a month ago):Cuban bread, Burger/Hotdog buns, Pasta, 3-Seed WW, Pretzels, Whole Grains, Sennebec Bread, Sourdough, Pizza, Flatbread, Breakfast, Holiday, Portuguese, Quick, Cranberry Tea Bread. Favorite recipes are 9-Grain Honey Bread, Pizza dough, Portuguese Sweet Bread which I've given as gifts, whole wheat dinner rolls (my favorite for texture & flavor), Pumpkin Challah, Morning Sicky Buns (cinnamon rolls), Rose Rolls (to die for), I could go on & on.Since I'm at high altitude, I use a little more gluten, more or less yeast depending on other ingredients (read the book), & sub a lot of whole wheat flour & oat bran for health. A few recipes I won't make again: Banana Oatmeal bread tasted like sandwich bread w/hint of banana (good but not what expected), Zucchini Bread, also good dinner bread but not for dessert, & Irish Potato Brown bread was bland. But many more recipes I tried I put 4 1/2 or 5 stars next to & I'm looking forward to trying so many more.

The only thing that would make this book better: measurements given in grams instead of cups. I've been using this bread machine cookbook since it was published, which means I've made almost every variety of loaf. As someone who bakes often, I use a scale and find it gives the most accurate results. Calculating this book's recipes into weights instead of volumes is way beyond my abilities and probably for an expert baker only.I've experienced difficulty with the fruit & nut breads not baking properly/rising properly, but have only attempted those recipes one time each, and then only one or two recipes - even a frequent baker can make errors with recipes, so I'll have to become more familiar with how to judge the dough as it's being kneaded in order to make any liquid/dry ingred. adjustments. I haven't tried making pasta or jams, so can't speak about how they turn out, nor have I made pizza dough.This book is massive in size, and it can be difficult to find specific loaves or information pages - if you don't remember the exact name of a loaf, forget about using the index, ditto the headline pages and other special sections.I've got so many dog-eared pages, marked with dates, any recipe adjustments, comments about crust and crumb, and my husband's 'loves' - that my copy looks almost hexagonal, lol. I've made our favorites many, many times as well as explored different loaves nearly every week, and 98% turn out perfectly. I use a Zojirushi Virtuoso bread machine - a machine I highly recommend for the shape of the loaves, 1 1/2 & 2 lb. loaf size options, variety of settings, and ease of use. I've had this machine as long as I've had the Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook, only replacing the loaf pan once.

An upfront confession: When we want to change something about ourselves, say our style of parenting, it's often very difficult to do with nothing more than desire. I've found, however, that if I can see the issue differently it often becomes much easier to operate differently, even when the circumstances are the same.The Danish Way of Parenting encourages us to take a long view in children's development, and this can allow us to see our role as parents in a new way. For example, the authors claim that in Denmark there is no such thing as the "Terrible Twos." Of course two-year-olds in Denmark are not some placid freaks of nature, but the Danes call this step in children's development the "Boundary Age," and don't see it as something to dread or get upset about. In other words, while we in US tend to see a two-year old at a defiant, willful stage that we must deal with by establishing our authority, the Danes see this age as the time when children start growing and experimenting to find out about the world and their abilities. Part of that experimentation involves the child learning where his boundaries are. No one argues that the child should get his way through temper tantrums, but it's easier not to overreact to children's behavior if we don't frame it as a direct challenge to our authority, but instead see it as an attempt to find out where their boundaries are.Much of the Danish way to parent seems to depend more on both parents being more involved in hands on parenting than we usually see in the United States. And their culture seems to encourage more interaction with the extended family than ours does, with their socializing appearing to be more child centered than ours. Those sorts of conditions require a larger number of people being on the same page to support children, and may not be useful as a model here. But the general way Danes see children's development and their relationship to their children might shed a lot of light on child rearing practices we can, and perhaps should, change.

I feel like sometimes the author doesn't really understand the studies she's reading. You know those news write-ups about a study, and then you go and read the study and it seems like the journalist had no idea what they were reading? That's sort of the feeling I get reading this book. There are some nice parts, but nothing too mindblowing. The author's tone is a bit weird--if you end up reading it you'll get what I mean. She's an American trying to understand a different culture, but through her own American perspective. So it does come off as a little tone deaf. I did enjoy the section about empathy training in schools.

Amazing book. People have noticed change in my interaction with kids. I was always told I was great with kids, now I am learning to be even better.I am much more calm and better understand from their prospective. There is no one book on parenting but this whole book should be one of the chapters.

I enjoy learning about parenting techniques, styles, and methods of other cultures. I think it helps to keep things in perspective and is definitely good for thought. I've now recommended this book to several people because I enjoyed it so much! I appreciate that the authors didn't spend half the book explaining their education and how you should follow their methods because they are the smartest, most experienced, and have more credentials than anyone else in the world offering parenting advice. I also felt that it was a nice, easy-to-read, high level, big-picture kind of book. There was no "if your child does that, you should do this" sort of instruction. I really liked that it was more about general concepts, like reframing, with relatable examples. I find myself recognizing and thinking about the various concepts and ideas in my everyday interactions with my son much more so than any other book I've read (I've read quite a few), and it doesn't really require any effort to make the little changes in language and perception that I've made. I guess you could say that the book really expanded my understanding. I highly recommend this book!

The tone of the book is a bit strange, more like a fetishization of Danish culture and parenting than a serious comparison of parenting styles and why they may produce different results. It's far inferior to books like Achtung Baby, which I found provided much greater detail and insight.

Baird T. I had a class with Dr. Wayne Dyer speaking. He would talk about passages from this series. I put it on my list to buy. I held off due to the cost of it. One day, I finally just took the plunge and bought them. I have found, after reading just one book, these are the best books I could of ever bought. These books have brought me so much insight and joy. In order to accept what has been written, one needs to have a open mind and to accept who they are. I have found reading "The Impersonal Life" by Joseph Benner first, to be of help. I am thankful to have been brought to these books.These books are books on who humans are, spiritually. They talk about the Masters on earth who are still here helping humanity to awaken. They talk about Jesus Christ and others who have come first. I highly recommend these books, whether you are Christian or not.

The author traveled many years around Himalayas in India, Tibet, and China meeting with the Masters which is the name for highly advanced human beings capable of performing miracles similar to the ones described in the gospels - walk on water, feed a crowd with the never-ending loaf of bread, turning water into wine, teleportation, walking thru fire, immortality and other unbelievable for an average mind things. What is especially interesting, the story is told from the point of view of a skeptical mind that is looking for an excuse to disbelief. The thoughts of hypnosis or trickery came to the author's mind in the beginning, along with the similar thoughts of his travel companions. However living with Masters and seeing them performing all these amazing things on a daily basis, getting to know them and their abundant Love for the lost souls. their deep understanding of spirituality and the Universal Laws, their insights into the Gospels, the amazing stories about John the Baptist and many other things finally convinced the author. Still when he returned to America he did not publish the account of his travels. He was convinced that the American society at large, which was drowning deeper and deeper into atheism, materialism and consumerism was simply not ready for the message he had for them. His amazing work was published after his death. Do not read it if you have closed mind...It just happened that I got my hands on this amazing work right after I finished the books by Draja Mickaharic "Immortality" and "The Long Lived".I never met Draja in person, but I have tremendous respect for him. He is now retired and lives in Philadelphia with the family of one of his students. I read all his books and tried his advice in real life, it always worked. Draja describes in the books I mentioned many similar things and gives some technical details. So after that the stories of Baird Spalding were not so unbelievable as it might have sounded if I had no previous acquaintance with the subject.

An excellent book to kick-start your enlightenment process.Be sure that the enlightenment process includes the learning of a very specific method, which this book does not teach.But what it contains, the quotes, are very, very useful.You also want to be aware of some of the tampering of the text, particularly of Baird's - use your insight to validate what you read.

While somewhat esoteric for some, it has essential truth that passes the test of time (which is really just an illusion, anyway). I LOVE the series, and find it very uplifting to reread select sentences or paragraphs each day.

Great set of books. Highly recommended reading for serious seekers after the truth about life. Heavily slanted towards Christianity with an admixture of Hindu philosophy. A lot of the text is full of fantastic recounting of Mr. Spalding's expeditions through India, Tibet, the Gobi, however, they all agree with my intuitive understanding.

These books have been significant in my spiritual life - everything is there, from God, Jesus, Buddha, who we really are, the creation of the world, life everlasting. I have lots of notes and use a lot of the prayers on a daily basis. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE BOOKS TO ANYONE ON A SPIRITUAL PATH.

This book is a small book that gives much verbal background on the comic strips as well as the strips themselves. I'm not a fan of this format, especially in the smaller format, but it is ok.

If you work in an office environment, then much needed humor to forget about the insanity you must stave off.

This was a real good one. It’s less about work and more about ways to find humour at the expense of others. That’s a paraphrase of the subtitle and really all there is to sum it up. The lessons can apply to many areas of life. There are lessons on how to be creative and a number of great pranks you can play. There are also good ways to deal with all types of horrible people that you wouldn’t want to interact with but unfortunately have to. Of course, none of these suggestions are realistic, but they are hilarious. And some of them could probably be implemented in a more tasteful way to great success (or at least personal satisfaction). The section on handling criticism was refreshingly honest, if rude (as usual). I mostly just liked how he pointed out the ridiculous things people have criticized his comics for and how there’s really no way to avoid stuff like that. There’s growing a thick skin, and then there’s finding humour in the situation. That’s what I try to do. Either a) stop caring, b) think it’s funny, or c) both. I also liked how in this book there are a few more personal stories than in his other books. They are longer than his fictitious stories and are still very amusing, even more so because they are true. So many funny things happen to us each day when no one else is around to experience them. That’s why I love reading nonfiction humour. Sometimes truth is stranger (and funnier) than fiction. And better yet, the funny story just writes itself. You just have to transcribe the situation. No thinking required. I would write if I thought that other people had the same sense of humour I did. But I suppose Scott’s section on the six dimensions of humour would help sort that out. Something to consider. (;Anyway, so far all of the books in this series are pure gems and I would encourage picking any of them up in any order. I’ve still got two more to go. We could all use a laugh every once in a while and I am certain you’ll learn something.

It was when they were putting it to music (since "there is a wealth of evidence that people can remember words more easily if they are put to music"), that he finally came clean.With the advent of Mebert, we are looking at a new age in consulting. One day we will look back to the Golden Days when consultants borrowed your watch and at least told you the time. This book is a great resource for encouraging and developing a growth mindset in your classroom or child. There are many ideas, lesson plans, materials, charts, guide questions and journal entries that encourage your own development of a growth mindset along with your students. One of the authors of the book is a Kindergarten teacher, so many of the anecdotes come from her classroom experience. I would like to challenge the notion put forth by another reviewer that this book is too dull for middle school students. I have worked with students from K-8 and believe that the material in this book can easily be modified to be applicable and engaging to any student in those grade levels. The authors actually provide modification strategies for many of the lesson plans to make them more appropriate for whatever grade level you teach. I could not put this book down while I was reading it and found it to be very enjoyable to read. I finished it in less then a week and it caused me to want to read many more of the books that they recommend for further growth in the last chapter. I look forward to implementing many of the strategies recommended in this book in my classroom next year. I have gained tips for working with my own toddler as to how to help them begin to develop a growth mindset now.

No one mentioned the Growth Mindset until 2006, thanks to Carol Dweck, a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. Maybe you've got a whole classroom full of small humans to teach and aren't awash in leisure hours to read something technical.This book is for you.I'm excited to use this with my students. I think it will really help some of them discover their abilities. I'm also super excited that it's all based on scientific evidence. It's a great book though, because you get just enough of the science to help you see why the techniques will be effective. It doesn't dwell for days on the science, because good grief, Charlie Brown, you have enough to do. You just want to implement the science, not get another degree in it! We're looking for a way to help students; not a way to get more college credits. (Or maybe we are, but let's try not to think about grading winter finals and being in school at the same time. haha)P.S. Please disregard my grammar. I teach math. ;-)

After a recent talk by Karen Bussolini, this book’s photographer, I bought a paperback edition on the spot. I urge you to do the same if you plan to buy trees or shrubs for your garden.I’ve used the book almost daily for a month now and the title and subtitle are stated accurately. This book is “complete” and offers “essential” information for gardeners of all experience levels. Check out the Table of Contents, index and back cover for yourself with Amazon’s Look Inside tool. Information is organized into bite-sized topics, charts, and scores of lists, such as Trees and shrubs with unusual textures, Bark standouts, Colorful evergreens, Native plants that attract wildlife, Deer-resistant varieties, etc. This handbook explains how to evaluate your home landscape and growing conditions, select quality plants (with the Buyer’s Checklist on page 79), plant them correctly and care for them afterwards. The Trees and Shrubs A-Z section describes each plant’s essential details and landscape uses, which sometimes includes companion plant suggestions. “All about” sidebars provide overviews of popular choices, such as maples, hydrangeas, magnolias and rhododendrons.O’Sullivan’s friendly and frank writing style is akin to a chat with a trusted gardening mentor. You won’t feel as if you’re wading through a dry instruction manual. Bussolini’s photographs depict the book’s concepts with shots of landscapes that are achievable for this average gardener. Throughout, Bussolini’s photos beautifully showcase the 357 plants described. Her close-ups show unique plant features that lend multi-season interest to landscapes.I wanted to address two points raised in other reviews: 1) I’ve seen no evidence that “plants had misprints.” 2) Latin names are used instead of common plant names in most books for the sake of accuracy. Plants are known by a variety of common names, much like some people have nicknames. The Latin name assures gardeners they’ve found the right plant when they see the Latin name on a plant tag. A good example of this is the small tree with the Latin name Amelanchier. The tree’s common names include Shadbush, Shadblow, Serviceberry, Juneberry and Saskatoon, any one of which you may hear referenced depending on where you live.In summary, the combination of writing and photography raised my confidence and motivation to tackle an overdue landscape renovation. This was a purchase worthy of the limited space left on my gardening bookshelf.

While browsing through tree and shrub books at Barnes and Nobles, this one by far was the most complete. So good I had to have it and bought it on Amazon. Not only does it give you regular text book definitions of everything, the author gives her personal opinions and incites (in my case Red Maples), which is hard to find. For ex. what shrubs/trees will work in what soils and what trees might be more acceptable to disease, and so on. Don't expect to have a detailed page for every single tree out there, but it is still a great resource and should have what your looking for. My only complaint is the Glossary. If you look up "Red Oak", you'll probably find "please look up (scientific name)". Unfortunately most tree/plant book's Glossaries are like this, so I am not going to blame the author. Since the publication date is relatively recent, the pictures are pretty decent.

The best gardening books tend to be the ones in which the author is not afraid to be opinionated, and feels free to express affection or dislike of a plant, show a little personality, etc. This book fits that bill. I found the author's advice regarding techniques, landscape design, and plant selection to be practical and wise. The species references in the back of the book are quite detailed and the author has good tastes in plants. Wish more gardening books were this good.

This is one great book, full of a lot of pictures and suggestions, solutions to all your landscaping needs to create a beautiful well maintained, inviting yard that will be the an object of envious feeling of your neiborhood. This one book will help you plan, implement and accomplish your welcoming spot to all and showsthat you have taken the time to pursue through the use of this book as a starting point to a beatiful, well maintained paradise.

Concise info based on region, type of shrub,tree plant etc etc. would recommend to anyone just getting into landscaping. Will be using it a bunch this spring

I would line this book up against any other one for great content and completeness. If you are a botanist, you might prefer a more academic, scholarly, highly detailed book, but for avid gardeners, this one is superb. I have used it in the Master Gardener's program in my State.

Good general overviews, but very light on details

Great book for the landscaper and the gardener. A Very informative on the types and care of shrubs and trees.
