Thorstein Veblen is a very interesting being. I read about Veblen in economics books. For instance 'The Worldly Philosophers' has a whole chapter on him. To understand the context of where he fit. Adam Smith said small government with maximum freedom means wealth. But then David Ricardo and Thomas Malthus showed some complications to Adam Smith's theories. So John Stuart Mill taught that institutions are the solution. For instance if the landowner is getting rich at everybody's expense, how bout the landowner gets taxed more?In this context Thorstein Veblen shows that economists will always disagree on any solution. If their are 5 economists in the room you will get 6 different answers. Veblen saw two main groups of people. Those of the Leisure Class who are the rich rulers, who waste resources and set society's norms. The others conform as they are worried about fitting in and end up wasting time and money on things that have no benefit to them. Then he saw the industrial class as the solution. As industry develops, people become more and more matter of fact.Veblen saw ancient but not modern religion as an example of the leisure class setting norms. He saw religious ornaments and ceremonies as a waste of time. He saw those working in the factory, and focusing on the matter of facts of breaking free of the norms established by the Leisure Class. To him ancient religion took control of people by using fear. However, he saw modern religion as good. He saw charities as giving back to the people, and he saw this as becoming more and more reality.Unfortunately some of what Veblen has advocated has come to pass, and the world is no better. We have become more technological in our communication-internet and cellphones; and have less time for face to face communication. I miss those days. Another worrying thing is that Karl Marx was against family, religion and private property. Veblen was also against the traditional family, traditional religion and private property. He was against traditional family in the sense that the woman would concentrate on having children and pleasing her man instead of working in the family. Where they disagreed is that Marx saw technology as part of the ruling class, and making the life of everybody else miserable. Whereas Veblen saw the machine as ultimately liberating people. He also saw mankind on an evolutionary path, whereas Marx saw the end of capitalism as the 2nd to last stage.In all Veblen, is a very interesting being as he comes from a very unique point of view. One last thing about ancient vs modern religion. 'Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world" James 1:27. So there you have it he wasn't against all forms of religion. I'm giving him 5 stars not because I agree or disagree with him, but simply cause he presented a different view in economics, and different economists have different views. And last of all yes he did write many books and articles, but most of his other books are just a build on. This book covers the majority of his ideas.

This is the classic deep sociological analysis of "conspicuous consumption" (a term it coined) and its cultural effects. It has lots of of insight about social structure and capitalism which is still applicable today. It is also interesting because it was published when "socialism" was not a dirty word and it seemed as if it might succeed, not just in the US. On the minus side it is padded out and repetitive, so skimming in spots is recommended. He also used some very outdated evolutionary analysis (evolution was still a hot subject then and being inappropriately applied in many places, as it has been since then), but that is easily ignored.

This review calls for some humility – it's like being asked to review Shakespeare and asked whether It is any good. The author is a master of a mannered style of English prose – a little grand in today's terms but really a pleasure to read.Why would a person read "The Theory of the Leisure Class" by Thorstein Veblen today? This book was written in 1899 by an economist though it is wider in scale than mere economics. I first came across it in 1970 when it was referred to by S I Hayakawa a somewhat indifferent scholar of general semantics as understood by Alfred Korbzybski. Hayakawa went on to be Senator in California after serving a time as president of San Francisco State University and having employed helicopters to teargas students. He is also mentioned in Robert L Heilbroner's "the Worldly Philosophers" where Adam Smith and Keynes are included in six leading economists which includes Thorstein Veblen, but I must get back to the topic. The relevance of this book today seems to be that we have returned to 1900 after a period of democracy which existed in America following the trust busting. Democracy has been gradually rolled back from the 70s. The rich 1% now control about 20% of the resources, tax rates are falling and democracy in United States seems to be on the way out. At the time when Thorstein Veblen was writing about 4% of American youth went to university, mainly from the elites where they could meet and marry each other. The state of American universities are such today that we may well revert to that position. The American ruling class has generally been industrious and not a leisure class: see the studies of G William Domhoff, though there do exist some tens of thousands who never work at all amongst the elites. One hopes that the leisure class is capable of contributing to culture either directly or through patronage, but when you look at the English leisure class of the 19th century, it seemed to consist of gentlemen (gentlefolk) who spent their whole time hunting, fishing and shooting; and not much was produced by them – mainly the middle classes looked after culture. In fact the word "culture" is looked down upon by the gentry who refer to themselves as civilised rather than "cultured" which is a middle-class word.In this book Veblen coined the phrase "conspicuous consumption" though today the old rich indulge more in "inconspicuous consumption" and it is the Jetset and flashy newly arrives who flaunt their wealth in the form of McMansions and other forms of vulgarity. In Veblen's day it was the playing sports e.g. Polo, yachting, large wealth and working in essentially parasitic activities such as banking since this showed great wealth. His book is to be enjoyed for its prose style and I will finish this review with a quote from page 142 of the Dover edition:"Employments fall into a hierarchical gradation of reputability. Those which have to do immediately with ownership on a large scale are the most reputable of economic employments proper. Next to these in good repute come those employments that are immediately subservient to ownership and financiering, – such as banking and the law. Banking employments also carry a suggestion of large ownership, and this fact is doubtless accountable for a share of the prestige that attaches to the business. The profession of law does not imply large ownership, but since no taint of usefulness, for other than competitive purpose, attaches to the lawyer's trade, it grades high in the conventional scheme. The lawyer is exclusively occupied with the details of predatory fraud, either in achieving or in checkmating chicane, and success in the profession is therefore accepted as marking a large endowment of that barbarian astuteness which has always commanded men's respect and fear".

The book is one of the standards in the study of the value of the bourgeoisie. The only issue with Veblen is that his writing is very "tight" if I can use that word. You have to read him closely, and he writes from a viewpoint of a Sociologist, though, h e ultimately brings in economic thinking, not much like Marx, but thinking of his own. Conspicuous consumption and conspicuous waste are his two original ideas about the topic.

Yevgeny Zamyatin’s We is not as well known as George Orwell’s 1984, but it served as inspiration for Orwell’s novel. Both concern totalitarian societies ruled by iron-handed leaders. For We, this is “One State” ruled by the “Benefactor.” For 1984, it is “Oceania” ruled by “Big Brother.” In both, the citizen is under the ever-watchful eye of the state. In 1984, this is because of pervasive video technology. In We, it is because all buildings are made of transparent glass. And in both novels, the protagonist becomes momentarily free because of love for a woman, only to be dragged back into line by the state at the end.Zamyatin was Russian, and he wrote We in the early years of the Soviet Union, though it was first published in England in 1924. In fact, Soviet authorities didn’t allow it to be published there officially until 1988. To an extent, therefore, it can be read as a critique of Soviet totalitarianism. Soviet authorities harassed Zamyatin sufficiently that he requested permission to leave the country and went into exile in 1931. He died in 1935.And yet, as translator Clarence Brown makes clear in his Introduction, the setting could just as well be England’s industrialized north, where Zamyatin had spent two years building ice-breaker ships during World War I. In both England and the USSR, the time-and-motion studies of Frederick Winslow Taylor were in vogue. Taylor taught that industrial workers use of time and their bodily movements on the shop floor should be calculated precisely for the most efficient production. In that sense, human workers were just parts in an industrial machine, a theme that pervades We. Indeed, the novel explicitly mentions “Taylorism.” Every activity of the day is rigidly outlined in the “Table of Hours.” The depersonalization of human beings is so thorough that the novel refers to them as “Numbers.” The narrator and protagonist of the story is D-503, for example.Of course, persons—as opposed to Numbers—are bound by what C. S. Lewis called “the tether and pang of the particular.” They long for love and personal intimacy. They form families. They make babies. Not for nothing, then, marriage is proscribed by OneState. Sexual access to any other Numbers is guaranteed by the state. One simply has to apply for a ticket. Reproduction is carefully controlled. What upsets this control in D-503’s case is his love for I-330, which surprises even him. And he is further surprised by O-90’s love for him, so strong that she desires to have his baby without OneState’s permission. Love, marriage, and family, it seems, are always a threat to totalitarians because it creates an identity and allegiance that supersedes the state’s authority.Moreover, OneState is opposed to independent thinking by individuals. This is why I-330 is such an intriguing character. She dresses as she wants, plays music that she likes, and leads an organization (“Mephi”) that desires freedom from OneState. This kind of independent thinking is why OneState eventually forces all Numbers to undergo lobotomies to remove their “imagination.”In the end, OneState wins, at least in D-503’s case, just as Winston Smith returns to—or is returned to—the fold in 1984. While I think 1984 reads better, I enjoyed We too. Or perhaps enjoyed isn’t the right word. I learned from it. The human person is not a machine and cannot be perfected through scientific management by all-powerful experts. The tether and pang of the particular is too strong.

My all-time favorite dystopian novel. I've read it many times, recommended it to friends and hated when it was out of print for a long time. I purchased this book as a gift. My only complaint is that the editors of this newer edition felt obligated to make the writing more accessible and in doing so, took away some of its literary strength. For example, they note in the chapter where the hero leaves the protected area for the wilds of the untamed Ancients, that they speak in the language of the older ones, using a Latin vernacular. So instead of hearing the hero being addressed as "thou", we simply hear "you". Hearing the old language is a key part of his getting the feel of this previously undiscovered place where such alien concepts as love, jealousy and passion still exist. hen he hears her say, "Thou loveth fog, dost thou?", the reader experiences the chill that the hero feels as he begins his journey away from safe and sterile. It's a beautiful story- as written. Dumbing it down, even if it seems like helpful edits, takes away from the novel.

His lover, O-90, has been assigned to D-503, and they have Sexy-time on scheduled nights. O-90 cannot have children and this makes her deeply sad.But one day D-503 meets another woman, I-330, and is attracted to her. I-330 smokes cigarettes, drinks alcohol, and flirts with D-503, and all of this is highly illegal. But D-503 becomes obsessed with the new woman, his strange dreams confuse him. I-330 reveals to him that a secret society is planning a revolt, and she wants D-503 to assist because of his his position while building the Integral spacecraft.No more from me, I’d just be giving spoilers. But this short novel was excellent, and both George Orwell and Aldous Huxley were obviously taken with it. Totalitarian government mixed with in-the-future Science Fiction - what’s not to love?

Ina Garten and French cuisine. An interesting combination! I have a couple other of her cookbooks and have enjoyed a number of the menus that she has published. So, I was intrigued when I saw this volume.There are some recipes in here that differ from ones that I have tried over time. And that is always attractive to look at. Can I improve my recipes by looking at those of someone else? Examples:Chicken with 40 cloves of garlic. I first tried this at a dinner party 35 years ago. I really enjoyed it. I tried it a handful of times over the years and enjoyed the family recipe that I used. This is a nice variation. Intriguing variations from what I was used to? Cognac and heavy cream.Or Boeuf Bourguignon, a fancy name for a beef stew. This is fairly similar to my version. Distinctions? Cognac, beef broth. One difference. After having dined on this dish at a local restaurant, I enjoyed their reduction of the liquid, making the whole dish much richer. Hence, now, I reduce the liquid. This version does not. Still, there are some elements here that I need to incorporate into my own recipe next time around.And Croque monsieur. One of my favorite French lunches. Nice and makeable recipe. And a tasty outcome! Filet of beef au poivre. I have just begun to make similar dishes, and this recipe is a nice one! Again, cognac adds a nice element to the sauce.Garten says at the outset (Page 15): "I hope you'll find lots of entertaining ideas here and recipes that will not only wow your family and friends, but also convince you how easy it is to cook really delicious French food. . . ."

It looks like I've owned this book now for 11 years, it sure doesn't seem like I've had it for that long. It comes off my shelf for special occasions more than any other cookbook in my collection. In fact, we just used it again for three courses for our big Christmas dinner for friends. I can't say enough good things about this book so I'll try to point out some highlights. The Goat Cheese Tart has been a huge hit at three Christmas parties over the years. The Indonesian Gingered Chicken just made it's umpteenth appearance but this time as an Amuse Bouche to rave reviews and requests for the recipe at our Christmas table this year. The Chocolate Buttercream Cake was our dessert choice and everyone loved it. The roasted Tomato Soup was our soup course this year and people asked for some to take home. Over the years her salads have made repeated visits, especially her French Potato Salad. We've made several of the soup and appetizer courses and have tried the majority of her dinner ideas. The desserts are always welcome as well. I think that other reviewers have pointed out that this may be the best in her collections and I agree. We own a couple more of her books but this is the one that I always check first when I'm looking for something really good for ourselves or for our guests.

I love to cook, it is one of my greatest pleasures. I love food, learning new recipes, serving people dinner - from fancy get togethers, to a casual meal - and the one constant I always go back to are Ina Garten's cookbooks. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, themed to give readers top recipes from her now-closed gourmet store in The Hamptons, is absolutely no exception.First, the photographs in the book are amazing. They show beautiful meals of completed recipes, as well as some concerning choosing the freshest ingredients, preparing a recipe, and setting the table. Instead of making one feel intimidated or lacking because you don't have a 1,000 square foot kitchen of your own, they are inspiring, and make you excited to try each new recipe. Second, the food is, simply, divine. While there are some very creative and new recipes, many of the recipes are classics with a few new twists, that truly elevate the food. My favorite recipe in the book - as you can tell from my photograph how dirty the page is from me cooking it over and over - is the recipe for Filet of Beef Bourguignon. Ina took a Julia Child classic recipe and cut out a few hours of cooking time by using filets of beef. Truly delicious and so much easier to prepare. Serve it for your next dinner party, and you will get nothing but raves.

I have several of Ina's other books, but I seem to make and re-make things out of this cookbook more than the others combined. There's a great spinach pie recipe in here as well as a vegetable torte that I make regularly because I like a solid vegetable entre I can eat on all week with a salad. I make the spinach pie with a spaghetti squash crust rather than using pastry, thereby getting another vegetable serving and avoiding gluten.

I've had this cookbook for years -- almost since it was first published. I love it. I have used so many of the recipes and go back to them over time. The recipes are good, easy to prepare and very thoroughly tested for the average cook. Several friends are as hooked on BC as I am. We use her cookbooks for everyday and as a source of ideas for holidays, family dinners, parties -- everything.

This book is more than a cooking book,it is a pleasure to read and get to know Ina better. The pictures are stunning, the recipes easy to read, understand and follow, in short it is probably the best cooking book I ever read. Every recipe seems easy. I already tried the Provençal potato salad and it was simple and so delicious and fresh. I can't wait to try the rest. I have made lots of Ina's recipes which I got from the Food Network, and all are super great recipes, so I know her recipes are fool proof and delicious. I will be buying many more of her books. Love her, this woman can cook! Oh, and there are tips that are super helpful on almost every recipe.

All of Ina's cookbooks are terrific. This one is a culinary thrill for me having vacationed in Paris.My friends wonder where I get the know how to put on party after party every time with such sucess and skill.I keep Ina as my little secret !

I got this as a bar mitzvah present in 1960, and I gave the updated edition to my nephew for his bar mitzvah. The book is very good, especially for the cultural and national aspect of being a Jew. It also has religious material, but I learned much more of that elsewhere.

This dated but informative book provides a solid general history of the Jewish people from biblical times and the middle ages up well into the 20th Century. The book describes the history of the Jews, their traditions, lifestyles, and contributions in various nations of Europe, plus the USA and to a much smaller extent, the Middle East and Latin America. Readers learn of Jewish thinkers, writers, scientists, leaders, and (where allowed) leading political figures. Readers also see how the Jews have endured despite centuries of blame and (often violent) persecution, countered on certain honorable occasions by prominent non-Jewish defenders. There is also a look at just what constitutes the Jewish people - are they are religion, a nation, a people, or some combination thereof? Author Nathan Ausubel (1898-1986) provides an attractive mixture of prose, photos and illustrations. I'm African-American and this book has changed my life. I can't even put it into words. So many things but one passage about white solidarity (I won't say what it is, because I don't want to spoil the book) sticks out because it left me in tears; I had seen what DiAngelo described as "white solidarity" all through my adult life but had no words or validation on what this was until reading this book. I cried because it brought up an past issue where I was accused of being "aggressive" simply for articulating a counter point-of-view and that accusation had serious consequences. The "racial triggers for white people" was, by far, the most informative chapter for me. If I had known about this before, I could've used that knowledge and changed the trajectory of my life. I cannot recommend this book enough. My only small, frivolous, insignificant, petulant quibble is that there isn't an index, so I'm rereading it again with a highlighter. Thank you for what you do.

According to this author, those that are identified as white (not necessarily those who identify AS white) are guilty of racism and must be prepared to be tongue-lashed by her. It is curious that somehow denigrating a person by their skin color is not racist when done by a person of the same appearance. It is a popular book for those that need more of a reason to feel bad about themselves.Ironically, the subject is timely and through reading other sources of information on institutionalized racism, I have noticed many examples of this. The articles were well written and effective in that I was not made to feel that anything I did or said was automatically suspect and therefore invalid. A state of paralysis is not one from which change can occur.

I am very reluctant to give a negative review, especially when the author is trying to be helpful. In places the author has correctly diagnosed a number of genuine problems.Merely being non-racist isn’t good enough, because you end up as a bystander when a bully is beating up on a victim; both covering your eyes and ears and refusing to acknowledge what the victim (of racism) is telling you is happening to them.If you haven’t been a victim you cannot fully understand being a victim. If you haven’t experienced the pervasiveness and constancy of negative bias both coming from other groups and even influencing your own view of yourself – then you will never completely comprehend. So in one respect a white person cannot truly say, “I get it.”Neither can you ever do enough to win a gold star and say you’ve done “enough” as long as racism exists.It’s like the Talmudic maxim: “you will never finish perfecting the world, but you are never free to stop trying.”If the book stopped there, it would be fine. Perhaps even excellent.But I give this book one star because it makes the problem worse.This book is like a bad date where the other person is accusing you of all of your failures, and when you try to make up, to do better, to understand more, to be fully engaged as an ally, you are continually pushed away.And then you are told to “breathe” and calm down. Surely you are getting upset and proving the thesis!Except that’s not what’s happening.Yes, whites don’t see racism because they aren’t a target of it. If you aren’t a racist, then you don’t hang around racists. And if you aren’t black then you don’t have it hurled in your face. 99% of the problem is created by 1% of whites who other whites don’t see.The same would be true for misogyny. 99% of rapes are caused by 1% of perps, and the 99% of innocent men don’t see it because the perps aren’t harassing them.So men need to listen without being defensive. Whites need to listen without being defensive. It’s wrong to say, “But I’m not doing it” as if that will make it go away.But it’s also wrong to say that the non-harassing men or the non-harassing whites are guilty BECAUSE of their innocence.No, they aren’t being bad. They are being clueless. And instead of being accused they need to be engaged.Especially when they WANT to listen and be helpful.In short, if someone wants to be your friend – let them.This book doesn’t invite engagement and doesn’t let the non-involved to become involved in affirmatively fighting racism. It turns a lot of would be allies away.Ultimately, it’s self defeating.We need more people aware of racism. We need more people fighting racism. We need the majority engaged in helping the minority, rather than being turned away.I’d give this book five stars if it were half as long. But it’s the flawed existentialism that makes this book a hindrance to people who should be friends, and would be friends, if they were allowed to be.

I am a white pastor who is a part of a team that fights against racism within the church. Engaged in public education in Christian circles has been a sobering experience as white people hide behind their belief to support their fragility and prejudice. This book provided me with personal insight that I have never before encountered. The insight is that as a white man, I carry racism and the benefits of white privilege with me all the time. This understanding deepens my empathy and awareness when working with others from all social and racial backgrounds. I need to be consciously "less-white" and seek honest feedback from minority groups.If you are interested in reconciliation and peace-making this book is for you. Be brave and look at yourself as you read it. DiAngelo has given the reader an opportunity for personal growth and insight. This book's insight is a big step toward white maturity and relational peace.

Fantastic writing. So clear and explicit. I wish all white progressive people who want to see more justice in the world, and not participate in racism, would read this book. I do worry that they will be turned off by the title. This is not a shaming, blaming, guilt-inducing book. This is like a primer for white people, especially white progresses who think of themselves as not racist, to wake up out of the their own blindness to their participation in and maintenance of racism. No matter how ‘woke’ we think we are, there’s always more to see and uncover how we’ve been conditioned in the racist system that is foundational and omnipresent in America.

I anticipated after reading this book that I would gain a better understanding of why it is hard to talk about racism. However, the majority of the book focuses on generalizations about various groups of people.

Wow. It is probably too late for me, now. I had this book for months based on a recommendation and allowed it to collect dust. As I finally picked it up and read it, at the end of things, I realize what a mistake that was. So much of my relationship was in here and ways to work through it. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and this is one of my favorite books, and certainly one of the best couples books I've read. The suggestions are simple, and based on years of research. I have given this book to people I know who are struggling in their relationships.

"What Makes Love Last?" really opened my eyes, the quizzes helped me to assess and evaluate where my relationship is and he uses study cases to allow you great perspective/understanding. Gottman gives great coaching/guidance on how to evaluate & handle situations in your love relationship and how you can work through them. John Gottman writes well, if not a little dry at times. This is more a science approach to love with lots of science based examples. Best heard as an Audio inside the car.

Though this is a textbook, I read it primarily to learn more about the areas of this country and am very glad I did. Most of us Americans know amazingly little about the diverse regions of our nation, and are parochial fans of where we live. Hardwick's book is an important one because there are oddly almost no other textbooks on the adult/college level covering the geography of North America. The book divides the continent into 14 regions: the Atlantic periphery (northern New England and the far northeastern provinces of Canada), Quebec, Megalopolis (the urban stretch from Boston to Washington, D.C), the Great Lakes and Corn Belt, the Inland South, Coastal South, Great Plains, Rocky Mountain Region, Intermontane West, MexAmerica (the Southwest), California, Pacific Northwest, Hawai'i and the Pacific Islands, and the Far North (Canada, Alaska, Greenland).Keep in mind that this is not at all just about physical geography, but a description of how daily life, leisure, jobs, ethnicity, and traditions (e.g., food, music) differ regionally. The abundant photos and maps make for important visual understanding. The chapters take up less than 400 pages, with important points given succinctly. There are additonal chapters on the history, politics, and environmental setting of the continent. The writing tends to be factual summaries of topics, but they are livened by boxes of information on specific topics, such as country music in the Inland South chapter or hockey and ethnic identity in the chapter on Quebec. Anyone reading this book will learn a great deal of useful information about the U.S. and Canada. I will stop short of saying it should be required reading for all Americans, but I'm tempted!

Poorly written text that contradicts itself from chapter to chapter. Paragraph structure is terrible, switching topics mid-paragraph and continuing them in the next paragraph. Disjointed and difficult to follow the topic. Gets very detailed about one aspect of a particular state in a region and then basically dismisses other states with no detail at all. Very inconsistent. One chapter states the Native American culture group of the region is one thing, then contradicts itself in the next chapter. Cultural bias evident the longer you read. One of the worst texts I've encountered.
