What does it mean to be human? After you find out that everyone but one guy, a complete nutcase who intends to blow the rest of humanity up so he can be the official Last Man, are you more human...or less?And can you stop him?...So this was a lot of hard SF on the order of The Martian, although probably not quite as engineer-centric. But the style was much more like Roadside Picnic or Stanislaw Lem than it was your typical sci-fi writing, which gave it a heightened flavor. A philosopher's book with a ticking time bomb. There's a plot twist that I don't want to give away, but that pleased me very much with the core story. Can people change their minds, really? Truly? Blissfully, yes.

I truly enjoy Jason Dias' storytelling, and this is my favorite book by him to date. His writing is tight in this novel. It's emotional and gripping and ultimately full of hope, and chock-full of the complications that arise when starting a new society on a new world while watching the world of old die before your eyes. It ties in nicely with two earlier books, What Hope Wrought and Shooting Blanks, set in this story's past, though it's not an official sequel. I would, however, love to see a sequel to this book. This new world is rife with possibility.

This book is well written, with few grammatical errors. The idea behind it is reasonably well thought out. Thus, I give it 3 stars for those factors. But it simply is not to my taste, as it is dark and quite depressing. Earth has almost entirely fallen to its own violence, and a few survivors live on Mars. They are generationally split with a few born there on the red planet. Although the author throws a few small hints of hope into the end of the novel mostly it is a slog through dismal endings. This is not a space opera, neither is it really a hard science sci-fi, and it is not an exploration nor first contact. It is meant I think to be a novel about human weakness and isolation, almost a lost forever in the wilderness without any real hope. I would love to see this author write sci-fi full of optimism and possibility. I would definitely read that, because the author is talented.

All young people think they're different from their parents until they realize they're fundamentally not. Until they learn that there are some things, some needs, some emotions, that all people in the known universe share and some secrets within dark isolation that maybe should not be kept. Confronting mortality at the hands of a madman with no real way to stop him can make a person re-examine their priorities in a hurry. Finding Life on Mars is a poignant story of finding love, truth, solidarity, freedom, and oneself, set against the tense backdrop of surviving in an unforgiving alien environment while a ticking time bomb threatens to wipe out the very last of humanity.

What a fascinating read.I love and respect Dias' nonfiction work so much. I couldn't wait to see the world he imagined when life on Earth ends and a new world has to be developed on a planet so different than our own. What evolves in the story is more than those imaginings, though. Dias delivers a seamless blend of philosophical questions about what it means to be human, with characters trying to empathize with others whose emotional expression is different than their own, and a gripping plot where the threat of being destroyed is equally as tense as the struggle for survival.Highly recommended!

Finding Life On Mars is much more than a science fiction novel, although it satisfies most excellently in that regard. It is a delicate, tender, thoughtful examination of what it means to be human, what it means to love, and what it means to live. Dias manages to draw the reader swiftly and inescapably into the mind of what for most neurotypical readers should feel "other," and flips the construct so that outside is in, and inside is a wilderness, baffling and unmappable. Tense, gripping, action-packed and yet deeply emotional, this book is guaranteed to rivet the reader and linger long in the mind.

A story of what it means to be human, even if you don't feel you are. The science is fascinating, but the personal interactions and differences are more so. The main character/narrator is compelling. It's about relationships, understanding, adaptation, and survival in a harsh environment. A story with heart and a ticking clock.

This novel was painful to read. Cathartic. It hurt but I couldn't stop. The humanity held within and the ridiculously stern fight against it had me cheering for all involved. Bravo to the author, and to all people who struggle to know what is right.

Jan Zalasiewicz is Professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Leicester, and before that worked at the British Geological Survey. We bought this to add to our homeschool library and it is wonderful! It is full of not only interesting facts but beautiful artwork. When this arrived at my house I spent the next hour flipping through and reading the book before passing it off to my kids. Simply put it’s beautiful.

You can see the art style in the photos provided by Amazon. This book is beautiful. It has matte pages that are sturdy enough for kids. The art flows across large pages that make it a full page journey. It has neat facts about all sorts of different climbing which is why I knew my nephew (who is 9) would love this book. He is not an advanced reader, but the language is easy enough to read and challenging enough to keep him engaged.

Very interesting, had know idea there blood was used for medical testing. When I was a kid we would go see an uncle on the cape . He would use the horseshoe crabs to scratch his back!

could have used a bit more history with the book but good background on how the biomedical industry developed on the east coast

Sanjoy Chakravorty, Devesh Kapur, and Nirvikar Singh show with many statistics and graphs why the Indian-American population is the most successful racial or national subgroup in the United States. Messrs. Chakravorty, Kapur, and Singh call Indian Americans the “other one percent” because they make up about 1 percent of the American population, i.e. a little of over 3 million people. Indian Americans could become the “other two percent” in a couple of decades.High human capital and concentration in the fields of science and technology are behind the success story of the Indian-American population in the United States. To their credit, the authors go beyond the cliché of the “model minority” to also shed light on the life and career of Indian-American workers and entrepreneurs who are trapped by their immigration status, lack of education, or absent family support structures.Messrs. Chakravorty, Kapur, and Singh explain clearly to their audience that the India-born came to the United States mostly in three phases: The Early Movers (1965-1979), the Families (1980-1994), and the IT Generation (1995 onward). The authors argue that the first two groups can be combined into a single cohort, i.e. the Settlers 1.0, who are mainly Punjabi and Gujariti speakers. Messrs. Chakravorty, Kapur, and Singh call the IT Generation the Settlers 2.0, who are mainly Telugus, Tamils, and Hindi speakers. Many immigrants, including Indian Americans, maintain ties with their country of origin. Second, they were products of exacting Indian academic institutions, often with skills in engineering and computer science. Finally, they were thinned out by US immigration rules, which favoured clever students and skilled workers. “Indian Americans have been selected to be outliers — they have been selected for success,” the authors write.Set against this backdrop, the book’s title is pointed. Indians make up about 1 per cent of the US population, but their economic prowess means they are better integrated, and thus less visible, than other migrants. “Little India” neighborhoods dot many cities, but there are only seven American urban areas in which Indian-Americans constitute more than one-fourth of the population.That integration is all the more striking, given the population’s rapid growth. Three-quarters of Indians in the US have arrived since the mid-1990s, drawn in mostly by the tech sector. Americans born in India now number more than 2m, the largest foreign-born group after Mexicans.If present migration rates continue, the population will double again over the next few decades. Yet that is far from certain, not least because Trump plans to curb immigration. He has hinted specifically that he plans to scrap the H-1B visa category, which is dominated by tech-savvy Indians, often employed by software-outsourcing companies.This would be a shame. I am a Japanese mother who has America born half Japanese children. I went to library and borrowed a lot of Japanese study related books and CD. And this one was good comparing other book if you have a basic Japanese knowledge and able to read Hiragana. Surprizingly many of other Japanese study book had not Furigana on the top of Kanji, and this book has Furigana on the top of Kanji. So, while you are able to study Kanji, you have no trouble to pronounce it. However, some body else mentioned, this book has section which calls "Private Zone", it is not definitely appropriate for my kids who is using this book ( she is 13). I removed that section and copy MP player CD eliminating that section to her smartphone. Anyway, it is very generous that they have this CD attached to this book, they have common phrases. The publisher, Kodansha. is the one of biggest publisher in Japan. They are not specialized in learning Japanese book, but fiction, non-fiction and magazine. This is done by very reputable Japanese publisher. They most likely spend good amount of money on writing this book.

I'm using this book as an aid in some mutual-tutoring sessions with a Japanese girl who is trying to get into a local university. She tutors me in Japanese, I tutor her in English. For me, the book has been particularly useful as a source of everyday language which--as any student of the language knows--is confoundingly different from the acceptably formal/polite level taught in textbooks. I pick a particularly confusing phrase, my study partner then dissects the phrase and explains what all those "na"s and "no"s and "de"s really are. Oddly enough, it has also been helpful to her, as I read off a phrase and she tries to render it into decent English. Obviously our needs are very specialized, but there are some highly useful phrases in here, for the traveller and for the expatriate trying to set up household in Japan.

Excellent phrasebook. The mp3 CD is not just a nice addition; it is the essence of the book. I can't imagine one trying to speak Japanese without it. Yes, there is a section on sex called "the private zone" and therefore the book may not be suitable for children, but it is only a small portion and should not be used to condemn the entire book. I am learning Japanese and the book is a major resource in my study.

This is all you need to get started on your path to getting along in Japan. Each phrase is chosen by the authors with deep sensitivity to language that will not only get your needs met, but also present you as a polite human being to your listeners in a country where that is very important.It is filled with information that allows you to reach towards more than superficial relationships. You will have ways to express yourself effectively on an emotional and even sexually intimate level. Goes where no other guide has gone before in this area. The presentation is humorous and well organized making it fun, readable, and easy to find what you need quickly when you are on the spot and need help!

This book contains tons of phrases, but they don't have interchangeable options, so you may be stuck saying something unrelated if you're not a linguist.I commend them for making a book for the speaker (who may not have formal classes in Japanese) who had just arrived in Japan.However, the above detraction will not be counted.

This is a marvelous phrasebook and there is hiragana for the romaji text. The phrases are grouped by situations so you can learn based on the circumstances you anticipated.

Gift for my little sister, she loves it!

Awesome book! This will definitely help with my learning of the Japanese language. I highly recommend it. The cd that is included is helpful as well.

Ah this is classic Kearsley! I think she is at her best when she weaves a good romance into the core of her stories. I just finished Named of the Dragon and as soon as the romance picked up in this book I realized that's what had been lacking in NotD: a fully developed love story.In this story, the famed Ninth Roman Legion thought to have been lost in Scotland is the center of the story. There are ghosts who quite appropriately speak only Latin, people with "the second sight," tough as nails Scottish lasses (young and old), and men in kilts. I found some of the ending to be a little odd but overall I completely enjoyed this book.When you cozy up with Kearsley, you know you're getting a historical mystery set in a place that she describes in such loving detail as to make you want to go there immediately (is there a Kearsley tour of the UK out there? I would do that in a heartbeat). There may be ghosts, time travel, paranormal happenings, curses, or all of the above. And there will most likely be an adorable romance happening in it (warning: may also contain tragic romance but that's usually the one set in the past). There is nothing like a Kearsley novel to keep you totally engrossed and make you smile.

I love her writing, I never get tired of her books and look forward to reading each new one. This story was hinted at in a previous novel and proved to be just as intriguing as it sounded. Although it didn't have the flashbacks to and from previous centuries, it did have the ghosts! Sometimes suggestion is far more powerful than full description. One's imagination fills in the blanks and fleshes out the characters. The image of the dog greeting an invisible being was so well done, I could see it in my mind! The great bonus is that her books are so well researched that I learn from every novel of hers that I read - rather like a history lesson without the pain. I know more about historical digs that I did before and appreciate the respect and care with which history is preserved. Thank you for all you write and the enjoyment that I receive from reading it!

I love me a good time-slip novel, and Susanna Kearsley writes some of the best. This one involves an archeological dig of a site that may have belonged to the lost IX legion. Since no one has any idea where the IX Legion served, southern Scotland is as likely as anywhere. This particular site is a private dig, paid for by a wealthy man. His grandson sees and hears things that may be Latin, and an individual he calls the Sentinel.This is the framework for this romance between a female archeologist and a local man, and seeing how they work it all out is part of the fun of a Kearsley novel.

This is my favorite Susanna Kearsley novel so far. I have only read The Winter Sea and The Rose Garden and I really liked both of them but this is my favorite to date. All three novels have a bit of a otherworldly or paranormal slant to them, The Winter Sea and The Rose Garden are a little far fetched but it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of those stories. The Shadowy Horses has ghosts and psychics which is still far fetched (depending on your beliefs) but more believable. I wouldn't say this is an out right romance, it has more substance than that (again not knocking romance novels, I love them too) but it is a mystery with romantic overtures. The romance isn't just between the main characters (Verity and David) but one's passion for their profession, family, town, history and much more. I fell in love with all the characters and the little town in Scotland. I learned a little bit about the Roman occupation of Britain.The only thing that confused me a little about this novel was it seemed to have been written in the late 90's or early 2000's. No one seemed to have cell phones, they did a lot of work cataloging by hand not computer.I really enjoyed this book. Kearsley always does such a great job introducing historical periods into her contemporary books. I can't wait to read another of her books.

I absolutely love Susanna's books; her characters are easy to like, the story is interesting and the plot always has some kind of twist. The Shadowy Horses is no exception to the rule. The story pulled me in right from the beginning. There was enough interest to make me want to keep reading and the romantic portion, even though very mild, was enough to keep my imagination working.One of the things I like about Susanna's writing is how she explains what she needs but lets the rest up to the readers imagination. Take for instance the tension leading up to the romantic scene; but not really a romantic scene. There wasn't detail or anything but left me wondering and allowed my imagination to fill in the blanks.This story is a bit different from most of her other books since there isn't an actual time travel episode. Instead, there are flashbacks in a way (I don't want to give too much away).The end of the story is always a bit of a disappointment for me. I'm not disappointed with the story line but I always feel like I'm saying 'good-bye' to some good friends; and again, there is always story left over so the reader can fill in the blanks.I'm anxiously waiting for the next book from Susanna and have to admit I haven't been reading her books in succession. The first book I read was Winter Sea and have enjoyed all of the books since. Keep up the fantastic writing!
