I am a Japanese mother who has America born half Japanese children. I went to library and borrowed a lot of Japanese study related books and CD. And this one was good comparing other book if you have a basic Japanese knowledge and able to read Hiragana. Surprizingly many of other Japanese study book had not Furigana on the top of Kanji, and this book has Furigana on the top of Kanji. So, while you are able to study Kanji, you have no trouble to pronounce it. However, some body else mentioned, this book has section which calls "Private Zone", it is not definitely appropriate for my kids who is using this book ( she is 13). I removed that section and copy MP player CD eliminating that section to her smartphone. Anyway, it is very generous that they have this CD attached to this book, they have common phrases. The publisher, Kodansha. is the one of biggest publisher in Japan. They are not specialized in learning Japanese book, but fiction, non-fiction and magazine. This is done by very reputable Japanese publisher. They most likely spend good amount of money on writing this book.

I'm using this book as an aid in some mutual-tutoring sessions with a Japanese girl who is trying to get into a local university. She tutors me in Japanese, I tutor her in English. For me, the book has been particularly useful as a source of everyday language which--as any student of the language knows--is confoundingly different from the acceptably formal/polite level taught in textbooks. I pick a particularly confusing phrase, my study partner then dissects the phrase and explains what all those "na"s and "no"s and "de"s really are. Oddly enough, it has also been helpful to her, as I read off a phrase and she tries to render it into decent English. Obviously our needs are very specialized, but there are some highly useful phrases in here, for the traveller and for the expatriate trying to set up household in Japan.

Excellent phrasebook. The mp3 CD is not just a nice addition; it is the essence of the book. I can't imagine one trying to speak Japanese without it. Yes, there is a section on sex called "the private zone" and therefore the book may not be suitable for children, but it is only a small portion and should not be used to condemn the entire book. I am learning Japanese and the book is a major resource in my study.

This is all you need to get started on your path to getting along in Japan. Each phrase is chosen by the authors with deep sensitivity to language that will not only get your needs met, but also present you as a polite human being to your listeners in a country where that is very important.It is filled with information that allows you to reach towards more than superficial relationships. You will have ways to express yourself effectively on an emotional and even sexually intimate level. Goes where no other guide has gone before in this area. The presentation is humorous and well organized making it fun, readable, and easy to find what you need quickly when you are on the spot and need help!

This book contains tons of phrases, but they don't have interchangeable options, so you may be stuck saying something unrelated if you're not a linguist.I commend them for making a book for the speaker (who may not have formal classes in Japanese) who had just arrived in Japan.However, the above detraction will not be counted.

This is a marvelous phrasebook and there is hiragana for the romaji text. The phrases are grouped by situations so you can learn based on the circumstances you anticipated.

Gift for my little sister, she loves it!

Awesome book! This will definitely help with my learning of the Japanese language. I highly recommend it. The cd that is included is helpful as well.

Ah this is classic Kearsley! I think she is at her best when she weaves a good romance into the core of her stories. I just finished Named of the Dragon and as soon as the romance picked up in this book I realized that's what had been lacking in NotD: a fully developed love story.In this story, the famed Ninth Roman Legion thought to have been lost in Scotland is the center of the story. There are ghosts who quite appropriately speak only Latin, people with "the second sight," tough as nails Scottish lasses (young and old), and men in kilts. I found some of the ending to be a little odd but overall I completely enjoyed this book.When you cozy up with Kearsley, you know you're getting a historical mystery set in a place that she describes in such loving detail as to make you want to go there immediately (is there a Kearsley tour of the UK out there? I would do that in a heartbeat). There may be ghosts, time travel, paranormal happenings, curses, or all of the above. And there will most likely be an adorable romance happening in it (warning: may also contain tragic romance but that's usually the one set in the past). There is nothing like a Kearsley novel to keep you totally engrossed and make you smile.

I love her writing, I never get tired of her books and look forward to reading each new one. This story was hinted at in a previous novel and proved to be just as intriguing as it sounded. Although it didn't have the flashbacks to and from previous centuries, it did have the ghosts! Sometimes suggestion is far more powerful than full description. One's imagination fills in the blanks and fleshes out the characters. The image of the dog greeting an invisible being was so well done, I could see it in my mind! The great bonus is that her books are so well researched that I learn from every novel of hers that I read - rather like a history lesson without the pain. I know more about historical digs that I did before and appreciate the respect and care with which history is preserved. Thank you for all you write and the enjoyment that I receive from reading it!

I love me a good time-slip novel, and Susanna Kearsley writes some of the best. This one involves an archeological dig of a site that may have belonged to the lost IX legion. Since no one has any idea where the IX Legion served, southern Scotland is as likely as anywhere. This particular site is a private dig, paid for by a wealthy man. His grandson sees and hears things that may be Latin, and an individual he calls the Sentinel.This is the framework for this romance between a female archeologist and a local man, and seeing how they work it all out is part of the fun of a Kearsley novel.

This is my favorite Susanna Kearsley novel so far. I have only read The Winter Sea and The Rose Garden and I really liked both of them but this is my favorite to date. All three novels have a bit of a otherworldly or paranormal slant to them, The Winter Sea and The Rose Garden are a little far fetched but it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of those stories. The Shadowy Horses has ghosts and psychics which is still far fetched (depending on your beliefs) but more believable. I wouldn't say this is an out right romance, it has more substance than that (again not knocking romance novels, I love them too) but it is a mystery with romantic overtures. The romance isn't just between the main characters (Verity and David) but one's passion for their profession, family, town, history and much more. I fell in love with all the characters and the little town in Scotland. I learned a little bit about the Roman occupation of Britain.The only thing that confused me a little about this novel was it seemed to have been written in the late 90's or early 2000's. No one seemed to have cell phones, they did a lot of work cataloging by hand not computer.I really enjoyed this book. Kearsley always does such a great job introducing historical periods into her contemporary books. I can't wait to read another of her books.

I absolutely love Susanna's books; her characters are easy to like, the story is interesting and the plot always has some kind of twist. The Shadowy Horses is no exception to the rule. The story pulled me in right from the beginning. There was enough interest to make me want to keep reading and the romantic portion, even though very mild, was enough to keep my imagination working.One of the things I like about Susanna's writing is how she explains what she needs but lets the rest up to the readers imagination. Take for instance the tension leading up to the romantic scene; but not really a romantic scene. There wasn't detail or anything but left me wondering and allowed my imagination to fill in the blanks.This story is a bit different from most of her other books since there isn't an actual time travel episode. Instead, there are flashbacks in a way (I don't want to give too much away).The end of the story is always a bit of a disappointment for me. I'm not disappointed with the story line but I always feel like I'm saying 'good-bye' to some good friends; and again, there is always story left over so the reader can fill in the blanks.I'm anxiously waiting for the next book from Susanna and have to admit I haven't been reading her books in succession. The first book I read was Winter Sea and have enjoyed all of the books since. Keep up the fantastic writing!

This book is truly amazing. I am considered a baby in my Christian journey and this book has helped me understand so much. The author explains everything in his books were everyone can understand what he is trying to tell us. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

After reading the author's first two books I was eager to read this new one. I was not disappointed. Mr. Palumbo takes on the challenge of unlocking the symbolisms and meanings of the Book of Revelation and how they relate to the End Times. He writes in a clear and easy to understand style which is helpful when dealing with a subject such as this. He has done extensive research and study on this topic and it shows. Everything is backed up with direct Scripture references that apply to each of the revelations. A well thought out and written book that you will definitely enjoy reading.

I enjoyed Bob's journey from beginning to end. The words will stir your soul like never before. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

As a science and technology teacher both in the U.S. public school and international school setting, I find great value in "Jimi & Isaac 3a". Mr. Rink does a superb job of tying the usual and unique feelings of Jimi as a young adolescent boy into the captivating story of a science fair runner up turned designer of an interplanetary probe and the life that goes along with that. I feel most of my students (especially middle school boys) can assimilate with the trials and success of Jimi. I am excited to share "Jimi and Isaac" with my students (especially prior to the school science fair to introduce them to scientific inquiry and design process) and peers!

I read this book as a therapist looking for more good resources for my own clients, as a mama to young kids growing up in a world that objectifies people ALL THE TIME, as a wife to a man in recovery, and as a woman in recovery myself. Needless to say, I could read this book through a variety of filters, and EVERY ONE OF THOSE filters gives this book 5 stars. Hands down, I will recommend this book to every client, not only the ones currently struggling through sexual addiction, but to friends and family of the struggling person. As a mama, Forest includes a few sections on raising our kids in this culture and how to best protect them. SO GOOD. So eye-opening. Every parent needs this book. As a wife, it helped me to understand some of what my husband might be thinking or believing about himself in his own recovery and ways I can continue to support him. AND, finally, as a woman... we often think it's only men who struggle with lust or objectification, but Forest has cleverly written this book in such a way that I found myself resonating with his chapters as well. This is NOT just for men; women will benefit too. So basically, this book is a must read for anyone. Oh, I'll add that my teenage daughter is reading the book now (she's 17) and said she LOVES it and has a handful of people she wants to share it with. So there you have it... it's even impacting teens.

This book has pragmatic and powerful steps which guides the person to develop a solid recovery. It is easy to read and too the point, not overfilled with too many details or micro-analysis. Ferdinand Magellan's ship was the first to circumnavigate the globe. While the accomplishment is recognized as a historic milestone, less known are the details of that voyage around the world. Magellan spent years trying to win the favor of the king of Portugal, and failing that he swore loyalty to the Spanish crown. After finally receiving Spain's backing for a trip to the Spice Islands, the king imposed numerous stipulations that would affect Magellan's crew and his authority over them. Once his fleet finally embarked, he had to contend with violent storms, mutinous crewmembers, and hostile natives. Bergreen tells a well-rounded story of Magellan, not just that of the romanticized hero but also that of the explorer's darker side. He also puts the voyage into its historical context, going into detail about what was known of the world at the time (and what was still uncharted), the rivalry between Portugal and Spain, and the church's attempt to divide up the New World between them. This is one of two books about Magellan and his epic voyage. The other is Manchester's "A World Lit Only by Fire." Foir anyone with enough interest in the subject to read either book, I would recommend both. This book deals almost exclusively with the voyage, which after considerable haggling to get financing, began with five very small (by today's standards) leaky, under-equipped, clumsy, floating torture chambers, into which 250 men and some provisions were packed; and ended with two of the ships seprately limping back to Spain with only 18 of the crew still alive,Magellan having been killed in the Philippines, probably because he at some point during the voyage fell captive to the illusion of immortaltiy, and involved his beleaguered crew in an impossible battle with a native army.As one of the earlier reviewers observed, this book would have been improved by providing more information about the times.There is, after all, only so much that can be said about trying to cross the Pacific Ocean without any maps and limited supplies of food, water, and, most important of all, no understanding of the need for Vitamin C.At the same time, the Manchester book spends an enormous number of pages describing in great detail hat horrible conditions of Europe and the Papacy during this time. Despite several history courses that should have left me at least vaguely aware of how bad things were then, I was astonished at the picture he painted. At such length that by the time he got to Magellan's voyage, it seemed almost an afterthought.Of the books, overall I enjoyed "Edge of the World" more, but I learned more of value from Manchester's book.

This is definitely not the story you were taught in school. Over the Edge of the World by Laurence Bergreen is a powerful page turner of the true story of what Magellan and his crew went through just to find nutmeg and cinnamon.Many of the men brought back to life in Bergreens book are worthy of books just on their own stories.The desperation and solitude, cut off for months at a time without seeing another single human being is enough to make the most dedicated introverts among us cringe. The men on Magellan's armada had no idea what they would come across. Boiling water at the equator? Magnetic islands that could pull nails from the ships if they got too close?If you have a curiosity of how soft the comforts of our modern society has made us, look no further than this book. What these men endured and sacrificed for, the things that you can easily find on the grocery store shelves is mind boggling.

Excellent! Well written, interesting and comprehensive. The author states that Magellan was and still is controversial, however, he does not seem controversial to me aside from his possibly ill-considered decision to engage in a fight with the natives in the Philippines which went awry and in which he was killed. This book is a fitting testimony to this man and the explorers of that time who ventured into the unknown in their tiny and frail wooden ships to extend knowledge of the world. Were they flawed? Of course. Aren't we all. What is important is that enterprising spirit which was and still is very important to the human quest for knowledge. Bergreen's book is a fitting reminder of this.

After reading All the journals of Captain Cooks Voyages, the Journal of Joseph Banks on Cooks first voyage, all of the Antarctic explorers, was looking forward to Magellan’s Voyage.However, in my opinion it is very poorly written and put together. Numerous “sidebars” where author just goes off on an entirely different tangent, happens so frequently was a pain to read, when you just wanted the voyage, diaries of crew, etc.Very slow going read. Compared to the Author : Joan Druett, Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World, a true story, this book about Magellan’s voyage is really TERRIBLE.This author doesn’t have a clue about how to tell a story or even how to organize it. With all the research he says he did, the book does not reflect it!I will not be buying any more books by this author, Laurence Bergreen again. I’d get a refund if I could! Waste of money.

I got this for my young brother and while at his place I decided to read it, took me about an hour to go through it and you can find all the information in this book online.It's really basic stuff, if you can't afford this book just search online for "good habits to build" I am sure you will fine something!

This book is very informative. I believe alot of it is common sense. However, it captures the beginning aspects of building towards success. The author just motivates you to start your objectives vs. Just considering them.
