What happens when a couple of seemingly ordinary middle school age boys decide to become rocket scientists in their spare time?This book is a fun-to-read tale about the incredible adventure of Jimi and Isaac, who are building a real Mars probe; and are working it in between soccer practice, Spanish tests and generally trying to stay out of trouble.The author has a wonderfully comedic ability to see the world through the eyes of an adolescent boy - whether dealing with annoying big sisters, conflicts with best friends, or embarrassing parents. And , inevitably, some valuable life lessons are learned along the way.Also impressive is the author's ability to explore and explain scientific concepts and product invention in ways that are fun and understandable, so that readers will learn something without even trying.An enjoyable read for both kids and their parents.
My grandson, who is 11 years old, loved this book. He was hooked right away when he read in the summary that they told fart jokes. He says he could relate to the adventures and antics of Jimi and Issac. He has recommended this book to his friends in class. He has a Science fair coming up, hope his project doesn't become this involve.My grandson wants to know when's the sequel coming out.
As a science and technology teacher both in the U.S. public school and international school setting, I find great value in "Jimi & Isaac 3a". Mr. Rink does a superb job of tying the usual and unique feelings of Jimi as a young adolescent boy into the captivating story of a science fair runner up turned designer of an interplanetary probe and the life that goes along with that. I feel most of my students (especially middle school boys) can assimilate with the trials and success of Jimi. I am excited to share "Jimi and Isaac" with my students (especially prior to the school science fair to introduce them to scientific inquiry and design process) and peers!
A great book which doesn't take forever to read but makes you want to read it to the end, even if you're the parent! Boys will definately like it. It is an interesting subject without getting too complicated. The author has a way of capturing a thought or attitude of a character and shows the ability to identify with that age group. Buy it!! Wholesome and relevant and humerous too.
Librarians, rejoice! Finally, here's a middle school book for boys who like science. Rockets, invention, music and friendship issues, all with a humorous overtone, will keep the boys reading and laughing until the end. Also, the 110+ pages are a selling point to boys who are reluctant readers. This book is a great addition to our middle school/high school library collection and I guarantee boys will be recommending it to each other.
Phil Rink knows what makes kids - especially boys - laugh. My son, an avid reader of youth titles both classic and recent found this book to be truly entertaining. Science, adventure and humor - what's not to like? Great fun.

Showing a great deal of teamwork, perseverance, humility, and forgiveness, Jimi builds a basic plan for a Mars probe.This is a great book for any young reader to dive into; Jimi has characteristics I wish many children had these days: respect for his parents, intelligence, inquisitiveness, determination, and dedication. There are a few places in the book where you chuckle a bit, but the majority of the story is based on the trials Jimi had to go through in order to reach a goal that many thought was unattainable by a young child. Never give up on dreams no matter how impossible they may seem.
