The authors do a very good job of clearly describing the challenges of writing a multi-lingual capable applications. They do so for both client-based and web-based applications. I learned more than I thought I would about non-English languages and how vastly they can differ from our own. The real find is in their coverage of Unicode, explaining what it hopes to achieve and how it impacts your Java programming.I would say the next revision (if there's going to be one) would benefit by expanding font installation in other operating systems. Not too surprisingly, they cover only Windows, as it has the best unicode support today. However, TrueType support is possible on the Unixes, if you know how. I'd be curious to know how it would be possible on Mac OS X. The book would also benefit from expanded discussion on internationalizing web applications. It only covers display issues. The authors cite not wanting to cover issues surrounding web-based data entry and database operations because other authors discuss them, but those are relevant topics, IMO. After all, they discussed Swing-based data entry, so why not web forms? I was hoping for more complete coverage, as I am working on a I18N project now. But I'll have to hunt around for other books for the topics I could not read about here.Overall, this book is a great buy. Modern software developers would be foolish to not familiarize themselves with the I18N APIs in today's global economy.

This book is very dated. It covers the basics pretty well: ResourceBundles, DateFormatter, Locales, etc. However, there are several things I find disappointing about this book:1) All the examples are mostly client side Java. Even the topic of internationalizing websites spends more time on Java applets. While this is Ok, I'm guessing most i18n work in Java these days is done for web applications.2) There are better libraries/frameworks for dealing with Internationalization than the ones that come with Java: ICU4J and JodaTime to name a few. Since this book was written in 2001, these are not covered.3) This book does not cover anything related to Java 1.5.

This book, being the only one of its sort, is the way to go if you need to internationalize your java application. The book covers the basics of internationalization on through more tricky elements, from locale sensitive string replacement on through web input methods.While the book gives you insight into the design model of java i18n, it doesn't go into exacting super accurate detail. Likely the ever changing java api attributes to this.The book is good, the examples are supurb. Just I found a few things (relating to input methods) that had me going to java.sun.com to find answers to.

Great book on I18N, but I believe some more detail could have been given on the gotchas of using Unicode. I still think it is worthy of 4 stars however.

There are three ways to handle internationalization of your Java applications. First, ignore it and give up all your non-English speaking customers. Second, write customized versions of your programs for each language you wish to support and live with a maintenance nightmare. Or third, take advantage of the many internationalization features built into Java. Fortunately, the internationalization features of Java are fairly simple to use and this book clearly explains how to apply them to your applications. The authors start with a description of the many writing systems in use through the world and discuss the many problems that these writing systems can cause for developers. The book then covers a wide range of topics:* how to use resource bundles to isolate locale specific data* formatting dates, numbers, and currency* handling searching and sorting issues for non-Latin alphabets (Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, etc.) as well as special cases within the Latin alphabet (an "a" with an umlaut is sorted with "a" in German but after "z" in Swedish)* handling languages such as Arabic and Hebrew that write from right to left* designing graphical interfaces to handle any writing system* building internationalized web sitesIf you plan on using the internationalization features of Java then you will definitely want to start with this book. The book is written for the intermediate to advanced Java programmer who needs to develop internationalized applications. The authors assume that the reader is unfamiliar with the issues involved with developing internationalized applications. (...)

This book does a good job of handling localization issues with respect to java applications through the use of resource bundles, and native language UIs.In my current project we are doing some very intensive XML processing with web content. Web content can be in any number of encodings and character sets, and we've had a decent number of problems when converting content from one encoding to another or from one character set to another.I was hoping that this book would give very practical hints about how to handle/avoid/rectify character set conversion issues in java. However, the only mention of converting encodings/character sets claims that if you use the proper java.io class with the proper constructor arguments, java will wave it's magic wand and all is right with the world. I can tell you for a fact this isn't true. This was a big disappointment of this book.

It's true that Deitsch's book offers little more subject matter than Sun's excellent Internationalization chapter of the Java tutorial at their web site. But it has the virues of being a book, which you can curl up with, thumb around in, and mark up. And it covers the Sun topics in more depth, with a wealth of examples.Java is the programming language that built in language support from the ground up, and *Java Internationalization* tells you how to take advantage of this feature. If you are writing Java code for international markets, this is your one-stop shop for a complete textbook on the subject.

Seke & Leona is more a love story than the first two books in the series, but probably my favorite. This is a deeper emotional story that is influenced by the main characters personal histories. I love how the people from the first two books have been included in the story, not just as cameo appearances. Its also wonderful to see characters that are bit older (40's plus) in the starring role. There is still the D/s, and master vs slave issue to resolve, as well as lots of sexual tension. There are a number of loose ends and hints for future stories, and I'm looking forward to find out how it all ends. Overall, I found this to be an excellent read.

Seke is the Master at Arms for the race. He is given the task of conditioning Leora for obedience training. At the end of the second book she helped her daughter in disobeying the king. Of course she had to be punished. The king gave her to Seke so she could be taught a lesson and so that he could fall in love. Seke has been alone since the death of his former wife. When the Zanadian planet fell his wife died in the explosion as Seke raced to save the young king. This is a choice he has grieved over ever since. When Seke first sees Leora he feels that tightness in his chest and the anticipation of her passing scent. He looks forward to seeing her each day and is very protective of her. As his desires increase for her he is still respectful to her. But the walls constantly crack when he is given charge of her and takes her to task. He feels guilty for wanting her and he feels disloyal to his deceased mate, but his heart wants Leora. This was a great book for this series and I loved it. ☺

Tasked with training Zander's mate's mother, Leora, to submit to her punishment, Zander's mentor, Seke is none too happy. Leora has been nothing but a temptation to him and he vowed celibacy to his dead wife when the invasion of Zambia took so many lives.But only a few days into the training and punishment and Seke is at the end of his rope.Good book. Too short.

To say I love this Zandian Masters series is a HUMONGOUS understatement! It is freakin' fantastic! The Zandian males with their horns and dominant natures are hot! I love the way the human women the meet cause them to lose all that warriors control they go on about. Author, Renee Rose, is the Queen of spanking and dominant aliens and she knows how to always temper that dominance with love and tenderness. That makes for a sensuous read. Please hurry with the next in the series!

Training His Human - The continuation of this series is a great read. Seke, who has vowed to never mate again has started to have feelings for Leora, a human. He is requested to punish her after leaving with her daughter, who is pregnant and mated to Zander, the Zandian prince in a rescue attempt of her other daughter, Lily. Seke in to teach her obedience and humility. There is a HEA for them but there is a lot that happens in the process. I love this series and this book is a good ad the others. I would highly recommend this book but would recommend them to be read in sequence even though it is a stand alone book. Renee Rose rocks in this series.

As always Ms. Rose delivers a great story, good characters, developed plot and an overall fun quick a good read. My only issues with the Tory is that the world development always leaves me wanting more. By book three (even though can be read standalone) in my mind the world should be a little more clear. That being said love love the stories and where the couples end up in. Good read.

This review is about the Kindle edition not the paper one. I agree the the traditional paper book deserves the 5 star rating. I purchased the book first and I liked it so much that I bought the Kindle edition to highlight, make notes in, and to keep as a handy screen based reference for my Pi based electronics projects.The Kindle edition's a disappointment. Here's why.1. The book has a great table of contents with a 3 level outline; chapters, sub headings under each chapter and sub topics under each sub heading. The Kindle edition only has a 2 level outline, no sub topics, making it extremely cumbersome, if not useless, as a navigation tool.2. The Kindle edition left out the index. Really, no index, and no, the global word search is not the same as a good index created and edited by a professional indexer.So minimal table of contents and no index makes the Kindle edition pretty useless as a convenient reference. If you don't believe me, try to find the topic section on Transistors using the Kindle edition. I'm sure you can eventually, but it's a PITA.By the way, I think it's sad that my one star review brings down the rating of the paper edition. Amazon, I should be able to review the Kindle edition separately from the paper edition. Especially if they are substantially different.

I'm a long time Linux user at work and home. I've been playing with the Raspberry Pi for a few years now as a basic Linux computer, but I always felt that interfacing it to other devices would make this a much more powerful little platform. This books covers all that's necessary to do that, but beware - it's not for those who don't want to dive deep into the technical details. Dr. Molloy teaches computer science at the college level, and there's detail here that represents that background. But it's all extremely well-supported within the book, along with his dedicated book website. All of the code examples he writes can be found there, along with excellent supplemental material.The book starts from basics - Raspberry Pi hardware, basic Linux commands, basic circuits for interfacing, etc. He then gets into the depths of how to interface all of these together. I'm fortunate to have enough background in these areas to weave through this, but those with less of a computer or electronics background might want to have a local geek or two handy to call in for help when needed. He has excellent coding examples in multiple languages, builds from simple to more complex examples, and provides libraries to continue your own programming projects using the knowledge you have gained throughout the book.I'm an Electrical / Computer Engineer by trade, and I've had an interest in introducing hobby electronics to my kids. When I first saw the Raspberry Pi, I thought this might be the ideal platform on which to develop that. This book is the missing piece to that puzzle for me. It's exactly what I was hoping for, with all the details one could want about making this magnificent little board talk to other devices. I picture many blinking lights and beeping speakers in the months to come as a result of this book! I consider this a bargain-priced book for everything that's contained within it. If there's something you want to connect up to a Raspberry Pi, odds are, there's a solution somewhere in this book. I highly recommend it.

This book covers a lot of area but be prepared to work hard if you read it. The examples are available for download on Github. The book is absolutely excellent. Clearly written with a great amount of detail, though the reader must realize there is a limit to how much info can be packed in a single book. Although beginners could read this book, I believe that it would be slow going for them. If you don't have some technical background I would suggest you look for a more basic book. This book covers topics such as RPi boot up sequence, Linux commands, hardware interfacing and useful projects. I'm an EE with programming experience in Windows and I found the Linux section easy to understand, but very slow going, due to the vastness of Linux. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in putting in the effort required to really learn the RPi and how to interface to other computers.

Mendelsohn has completely retranslated all of Cavafy into English. As he says in the Introduction, [Cavafy's poetry is] "deeply, hauntingly rhythmical, sensuously assonant when not actually rhyming. It seemed to me worthwhile to try to replicate these elements whenever it was possible to do so." Since I know no Greek, my previous exposure to Cavafy has been the Dalven translation, and while the latter adequately captures the sense of Cavafy's poems, the Mendelsohn translations are remarkable for their blend sense and sound. To pick one small example from hundreds of pages, the poem "Second Odyssey" begins: A second Odyssey and a great one, too, / greater than the first, perhaps. But alas, / without a Homer, without Hexameters. Mendelsohn's lucid introduction and detailed notes are essential for the modern American reader with no special background in Hellenic and Hellenistic culture and the Greek diaspora. I now appreciate much of Cavafy far more deeply than I did before. Altogether the book is an amazing amalgam of scholarship and art. Between the freshness of the poetry and the wonderful annotations it's hard to find a poem that doesn't "work," and many more now seem extraordinary.

I must say that I am partial to the Edmund Keeley/Philip Sherrard translations. Simply put, they are more accessible, poetic and evocative. I admit that Mendelsohn has done a yeoman's work in looking anew at the poems and offering these translations and he must be commended. However, they are mostly clunky, oblong and cumbersome, however "accurate" they may academically be. The introduction makes a very clear case for the approach but in practice I find it unconvincing. All that said, I am still glad I bought the book. The more Cavafy the better!

I had already bought the two-volume hardcover edition. (It is a pity that this edition is not also in a hardcover form considering it is slightly revised.) I have no more than a smattering of modern greek; but I have eleven different english translations of at least the Canon. Comparing Professor Mendelsohn's translation of "The God Abandons Anthony" (my favourite) with those and the original greek, I find his exemplary. N.B. Professor Mendelsohn's surname IS spelt with only one "s"---consult your own image of the cover.

Pure and simple, this tome is art. Housed in this volume is some of the most beautiful and thought provoking gay literature ever written. 5 stars; I always come back to read pieces from this book.

Mendelsohn provides a thorough and thoughtful discussion of Cavafy's poetry: the historical background for Cavafy, his Hellenistic interests, his use of demotic and classical Greek ,his preferred subjects The analysis of Cavafy's style, his attention to meter and rhyme is especially helpful and of particular interest is the history of the "unpublished poems," poems translated into English here for the first time.

This new translation has extensive notes. It's very helpful. If you love Cavafy, you will love this new translation. If you are unfamiliar with Cavafy, this is a great introduction.

I was under the impression this would have more drugs in it. Not the case. I have been using Micromedix for a while and wanted a book instead. Was a mistake, if you have not heard of micromedix, check it out. They have an app and it is fairly comprehensive. My girl friend is attending school to be a nurse anesthetist and did not find this book to be all that great (granted not really relating fields). I am currently attending school to be a Clinical Psychologist with a concentration in Neuropsychology, the book has been ok for me.

I purchased a bread machine so we could start eating healthier breads. I wish I'd read through all the reviews before purchasing this book so I would have read the warnings about gluten in the recipes.. I was really excited to get this book, but so disappointed when I started flipping through the recipes and kept seeing gluten in every single recipe! The only ones that don't have gluten are the few recipes for gluten free breads in the book.. Gluten is one of the biggest things we want to cut out, so obviously, I won't be using any in these recipes.. Not sure how the breads will turn out without it, but I'll try at least one.. I had purchased a Betty Crocker bread machine book and there isn't one recipe in that book that calls for Gluten.. I'm not really sure why the author of this book feels it's so important to add to all the recipes, but if you're like me and want to cut Gluten out of your diet as much as possible, skip this book and purchase the Betty Crocker bread machine cook book..

Yes, w book is packed with lots of recipes for your bread machine, but should you buy it? If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't buy it. Although the recipes are great, I just wanted basic bread machine recipes. If all you want are basic bread recipes, the King Arthur Flour website has a wide variety of bread and dough recipes available for FREE. If, however, you want a larger variety of recipes and more in depth explanations of the art of bread-making, this is the book for you.

This cookbook has made me a successful breadmaker in quick order. I made 2 recipes that came with my Oster breadmaker recipe book, but when I received this book, I've only used recipes from it. It is 600+ pages of recipes & info necessary for successful breadmaking, even at 8500 ft where I live. The author talks about bread machines, ingredients, techniques, she walks you thru your 1st loaf, using a starter, delay timer, high altitude baking, troubleshooting & how to fix problems.The recipes are arranged as: Daily Breads: White & Egg Breads; Earth's Bounty: Whole Wheat, Whole Grain & Specialty Flour Breads; Traditional Loaves: Country & Sourdough Breads; All Kinds of Flavors: Made with Garden Produce, Orchard & Dairy; Pizzas & other Flatbreads; Sweet Loaves: Chocolate, Fruit & Other; No-Yeast Quick Breads; Jams, Preserves & Chutneys; Appendix 1: Crumbs, Croutons, Crostini & Toasted Appetizers; Appendix 2: Spreads, Butters, Cheeses & Veggies to eat with your Bread! How's that for all-encompassing!The tabs I've put in my book for quick access (I haven't bought bread since I got my machine & this book a month ago):Cuban bread, Burger/Hotdog buns, Pasta, 3-Seed WW, Pretzels, Whole Grains, Sennebec Bread, Sourdough, Pizza, Flatbread, Breakfast, Holiday, Portuguese, Quick, Cranberry Tea Bread. Favorite recipes are 9-Grain Honey Bread, Pizza dough, Portuguese Sweet Bread which I've given as gifts, whole wheat dinner rolls (my favorite for texture & flavor), Pumpkin Challah, Morning Sicky Buns (cinnamon rolls), Rose Rolls (to die for), I could go on & on.Since I'm at high altitude, I use a little more gluten, more or less yeast depending on other ingredients (read the book), & sub a lot of whole wheat flour & oat bran for health. A few recipes I won't make again: Banana Oatmeal bread tasted like sandwich bread w/hint of banana (good but not what expected), Zucchini Bread, also good dinner bread but not for dessert, & Irish Potato Brown bread was bland. But many more recipes I tried I put 4 1/2 or 5 stars next to & I'm looking forward to trying so many more.

The only thing that would make this book better: measurements given in grams instead of cups. I've been using this bread machine cookbook since it was published, which means I've made almost every variety of loaf. As someone who bakes often, I use a scale and find it gives the most accurate results. Calculating this book's recipes into weights instead of volumes is way beyond my abilities and probably for an expert baker only.I've experienced difficulty with the fruit & nut breads not baking properly/rising properly, but have only attempted those recipes one time each, and then only one or two recipes - even a frequent baker can make errors with recipes, so I'll have to become more familiar with how to judge the dough as it's being kneaded in order to make any liquid/dry ingred. adjustments. I haven't tried making pasta or jams, so can't speak about how they turn out, nor have I made pizza dough.This book is massive in size, and it can be difficult to find specific loaves or information pages - if you don't remember the exact name of a loaf, forget about using the index, ditto the headline pages and other special sections.I've got so many dog-eared pages, marked with dates, any recipe adjustments, comments about crust and crumb, and my husband's 'loves' - that my copy looks almost hexagonal, lol. I've made our favorites many, many times as well as explored different loaves nearly every week, and 98% turn out perfectly. I use a Zojirushi Virtuoso bread machine - a machine I highly recommend for the shape of the loaves, 1 1/2 & 2 lb. loaf size options, variety of settings, and ease of use. I've had this machine as long as I've had the Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook, only replacing the loaf pan once.

I've found, however, that if I can see the issue differently it often becomes much easier to operate differently, even when the circumstances are the same.The Danish Way of Parenting encourages us to take a long view in children's development, and this can allow us to see our role as parents in a new way. For example, the authors claim that in Denmark there is no such thing as the "Terrible Twos." Of course two-year-olds in Denmark are not some placid freaks of nature, but the Danes call this step in children's development the "Boundary Age," and don't see it as something to dread or get upset about. In other words, while we in US tend to see a two-year old at a defiant, willful stage that we must deal with by establishing our authority, the Danes see this age as the time when children start growing and experimenting to find out about the world and their abilities. Part of that experimentation involves the child learning where his boundaries are. No one argues that the child should get his way through temper tantrums, but it's easier not to overreact to children's behavior if we don't frame it as a direct challenge to our authority, but instead see it as an attempt to find out where their boundaries are.Much of the Danish way to parent seems to depend more on both parents being more involved in hands on parenting than we usually see in the United States. And their culture seems to encourage more interaction with the extended family than ours does, with their socializing appearing to be more child centered than ours. Those sorts of conditions require a larger number of people being on the same page to support children, and may not be useful as a model here. But the general way Danes see children's development and their relationship to their children might shed a lot of light on child rearing practices we can, and perhaps should, change.

That's sort of the feeling I get reading this book. There are some nice parts, but nothing too mindblowing. The author's tone is a bit weird--if you end up reading it you'll get what I mean. She's an American trying to understand a different culture, but through her own American perspective. So it does come off as a little tone deaf. I did enjoy the section about empathy training in schools.

Amazing book. People have noticed change in my interaction with kids. I was always told I was great with kids, now I am learning to be even better.I am much more calm and better understand from their prospective. There is no one book on parenting but this whole book should be one of the chapters.

I enjoy learning about parenting techniques, styles, and methods of other cultures. I think it helps to keep things in perspective and is definitely good for thought. I've now recommended this book to several people because I enjoyed it so much! I appreciate that the authors didn't spend half the book explaining their education and how you should follow their methods because they are the smartest, most experienced, and have more credentials than anyone else in the world offering parenting advice. I also felt that it was a nice, easy-to-read, high level, big-picture kind of book. There was no "if your child does that, you should do this" sort of instruction. I really liked that it was more about general concepts, like reframing, with relatable examples. I find myself recognizing and thinking about the various concepts and ideas in my everyday interactions with my son much more so than any other book I've read (I've read quite a few), and it doesn't really require any effort to make the little changes in language and perception that I've made. I guess you could say that the book really expanded my understanding. I highly recommend this book!

The tone of the book is a bit strange, more like a fetishization of Danish culture and parenting than a serious comparison of parenting styles and why they may produce different results. It's far inferior to books like Achtung Baby, which I found provided much greater detail and insight.
