Review

“Albom’s fable about the power of song carries you along like a beautiful melody.” (People)“Albom’s The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto hits the right notes. Albom’s love for music is richly apparent... and his maxims about life will no doubt bring readers on a pleasantly sentimental journey about the bandmates in their lives.” (USA Today)“Albom can say in one sentence what others can spend a lifetime trying to convey.” (The Book Wheel)“Within a few pages, you’ll be as delighted with this sparkling book as I was. Start it, stick with it, and you’ll find ’The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto to be a book of note.” (Yankton Daily Press)“As always, Albom’s novel has a larger message...and The Magic Strings of Frankie Pesto resonates with a kind of cosmic connection.” (Miami New Times)“What an entertainer! Mitch Albom, author, playwright, screenwriter, nationally syndicated columnist - and philanthropist, as his audience learned, was a charmer…There seemed to be no end to this man’s talents.” (NorthJersey.com)“A beautiful story that forces us to think about the concept of a life well lived…Albom brings his literary magic once again.” (Huffington Post)

From the Back Cover

Mitch Albom’s most critically acclaimed novel yet is a stunningly original tale of love: love between a man and a woman, between an artist and his mentor, and between a musician and his God-given talent.Narrated by the voice of Music itself, the story follows Frankie Presto, a war orphan born in a burning church, through his extraordinary journey around the world. Raised by a blind guitar teacher in Spain and gifted with a talent to change people’s lives—using six mysterious blue strings—Frankie navigates the musical landscape of the twentieth century, from the 1950s jazz scene to the Grand Ole Opry to Elvis mania and Woodstock, all the while searching for his childhood love. As he becomes a famous star, he loses his way, until tragedy steals his ability to play the guitar that had so defined him. Overwhelmed by his loss, Frankie disappears for decades, reemerging late in life for one spectacular yet mystifying farewell.Part love story, part magical mystery, The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto is Mitch Albom at his finest, a Forrest Gump-like epic about one man’s journey to discover what truly matters and the power of talent to change our lives.

I don't often listen to audiobooks - mostly because I tend to doze off, and then I lose my place. Or I get distracted and stop listening for a moment, and lose my place. Well, some books are just meant to be heard rather than read, and The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto is definitely one of them. Read by the author but featuring a few famous names as themselves and other people (including Roger McGuinn, Ingrid Michaelson, John Pizzarelli, and Paul Stanley), it's a brilliant tale that meanders through the history of modern music. In this novel narrated by music, who introduces us to Frankie at the time of his death, Frankie Presto is a Spanish war orphan who is abandoned in a river. He goes on to become a musician comparable in fame to Elvis, the best guitarist who ever lived. Traveling to America in the bottom of a boat at the age of nine, his only possession is a guitar with six magic strings, and his only friend is a hairless dog who refuses to leave his side. When I first bought the ebook, I flipped through the first few pages and had to force myself to stop reading (since it wasn't that book's turn yet, and I try to stick to my list). The use of personified Music as narrator is really interesting stylistically, and I was fascinated with the musical terms that are used to describe the tempo of a day, the crescendo of an emotion and the pause of a rest. It gives the book a magical tone that meshes well with the magical realism of the unlikely coincidences that frame Frankie's life.Beginning at Frankie's funeral, I loved the intervals in which the people who knew him most intimately share the ways in which he affected their lives. Albom actually connected with the famous people whose lives he has inserted this fictional character into, and a lot of them contributed their own words to those sections to make them more authentic. It gives an added layer of richness to the story, and also gives a sense of the community of musicians that came together and played together and created the music that we know today.Towards the end, however, I felt that the story began to drag a little. As Frankie's career rises and then begins to fall, the denouement became depressing. However, right at the very end, Albom brings in an interesting device that ties everything together. It was neatly done, although I think that it could have been done a bit sooner. I don't want to give much away, but I was surprised by the ending, and my own predictions proved to be wrong - it was very clever. This is a brilliant audiobook, and the many voices who tell the story of Frankie Presto give it a richness and a variety that makes it a thrilling story to listen to. A book about music, narrated by music, is absolutely a book that should be heard rather than read, and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed The Book Thief, All The Light We Cannot See, and the music of the 1950s-1980s.

I am sorry my dear Amazon-ites......I read every word this man writes & have personally seen his growth from "Tuesday's With Morrie".....before this----I adored "The First Phone Call From Heaven".......However this (Just go to this book & read the other reviews)....This ladies & gentlemen is his tour-de-force. Their is no doubt.....it is already being spoken about in the same context as Steinbach & Hemingway. Yes-----IT IS THAT GOOD. It can be hard to follow @ times......but is well worth the ride. Lastly, if you have not read any of his previous works, I vehemently that you do not start with this true masterpiece....Pick up "FIve People You Will Meet In Heaven" & then Mitch Albom (sportswriter by trade) you will realize the genius of this man. His books are spiritual in nature, but @ no time does he hit you over the head with it. His books are the true chicken for the soul. If you are lucky enough to become "Albomized" like I am.......you will bless the day you found this man. Take a minute & look him up on Wikipedia & tell me you do not respect him.....Lastly, this book has already been translated into over 20 (yes-20!) different languages.

What a wonderful story. This is a book you'll want to add to your library. It is well written, thought provoking and has many little life lessons that you need to pay attention to. This is the first time I've ever read anything by Mitch Albom. After reading this book, I decided to add his works to my library. This isn't just one of those stories that stays with you, it is also one of those books that writers who aim to write well should read Albom's works because he is a great writer, and there are very few modern day writers that write very well. What I loved about this book is how every single character and moment intertwined with his life from beginning to end. It is a reminder that every little thing that happens in our lives happens for a reason. It is part of our greater design to helping us become the person we are meant to be.I highly recommend this book. It is inspiring. Also, there is an album entitled "The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto" that you can listen to as you read the book. It features a few of the songs mentioned in the book.

I would give this book 6, 8, 10 stars!!! It is the best book that I have read in a long, long time. It is the story of Frankie Presto as told by the muse Music. Frankie is an orphaned Spanish boy who is trained to be a guitar player by a blind teacher, Maestro. As a young boy his meets an English girl in a tree and knows that this is the girl he will marry. Because of the oppression of the Franco regime Frankie goes to America and starts a music career, which at its height he is as popular as Elvis. Like many great musicians Frankie has to deal with the demons of fame and fortune -- drugs and alcohol. I don't want to give too much away so just read the book. You will not be disappointed.

As music can take one down a different journey; this book took me down a whole new world of seeing the inside soul of music. This story was beyond phenomenal. I've heard rave reviews regarding Mr. Albom's books and this one is my first one to be read. I couldn't put its down. The way Mr. Albom worked real events around Frankie Presto was amazing. I absolutely loved music being the narrator. I love the surprise of reading a section I had no intention of hearing about, yet the full circle was revealed and sealed. ThAnk you for bringing back to life the band's, music, LOVE and instruments to the forefront. I rate this book 100+ stars.

Having read Mitch Albom's books, I can honestly say that in the begining I wasn't sure that I would finish this one. But... as I read, I could see that I was becoming more and more engrossed in Frankie Presto's life. Half way through, I couldn't put it down. I had to read as soon as I awoke. Music isthe food of life and I realized what a masterpiece this book is.

Two decades ago a UCLA geography professor named Jared Diamond published Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies. Diamond hypothesized that the arc of human history was dramatically shifted by geographic, environmental, biological, and other factors, resulting in the worldwide dominance of the leading industrial powers during the past 500 years. The book won a 1997 Pulitzer Prize and quickly became a New York Times bestseller. Why is economic development so uneven around the world?Diamond posed questions fundamental to the experience of the human race. “Why did wealth and power [among nations] become distributed as they now are, rather than in some other way?” “[W]hy did human development proceed at such different rates on different continents?” “[W]hy were Europeans, rather than Africans or Native Americans, the ones to end up with guns, the nastiest germs, and steel?” In his award-winning book, Diamond posited a “unified synthesis”—a unified field theory of history. Drawing from his wide-ranging knowledge of medicine, evolutionary biology, physiology, linguistics, and anthropology as well as geography, he surveyed the history of the past 13,000 years and identified plausible answers to the questions he had posed. In the process, he wrote what I consider to be the single most illuminating book on the history of the human race.Academic critics howledHowever, academic critics howled shortly after the publication of Guns, Germs, and Steel: They referred to supposed errors in geography and history, which I find largely pointless. For example, geographers complained that Diamond referred to Eurasia as a single continent rather than separately to Asia, North Africa, and Europe. That’s nitpicking, as far as I’m concerned. And many of these “errors” could simply be differences of opinion. Academics are unbearably dogmatic and dismissive of those who reject their pet theories. Some accused him of racism, although he rejected racist explanations early, forcefully, and often. That criticism is not only unsupported by Diamond’s book, it’s insulting to the reader. The most common and far-reaching complaint was that Diamond had succumbed to the heresy of “environmental determinism.” Understandably, Diamond grounded his argument in geographic and environmental factors—but he repeatedly cited numerous other influences as well. Ultimately, of course, everything we humans do, and everything we’ve done in the millions of years since our ancestors first climbed out of the trees, has been environmentally determined. There were complaints that Diamond had overlooked the contrast between temperate and tropical zones (he didn’t) and that he had only explained what happened 500 years ago but not subsequently (untrue). It might appear that at least some of Diamond’s critics never read the book. However, the most aggravating criticism was that he had ignored the motives that led the industrial nations to undertake colonialism and imperialism on a broad scale. Diamond addressed only the means that enabled the colonial powers to dominate, not the reasons why they chose to do so. To my mind, that’s no error. He didn’t pretend to explain colonialism and imperialism, merely to describe how it had become possible. Is it possible that most of these academic critics were simply bitter that Diamond hadn’t cited their own specialized research? The roots of academic criticismThough the critics undoubtedly uncovered a misplaced fact or unwarranted conclusion here and there through the book, the errors were exceedingly minor in the context of Diamond’s expansive hypothesis. It should be clear to any dispassionate reader that the academic reaction stemmed, above all, from narrow-mindedness and jealousy. The world of academia today is atomized. Specialties, sub-specialties, and sub-sub-specialties abound. It’s not unusual for a scholar to build a career on the study of a single obscure question that, when answered, will be of interest to virtually nobody. Interdisciplinary studies are frowned upon in most academic circles. Generalists are regarded as “not serious.” And scholars who write popular books, must less bestsellers, can expect a chilly reception from their peers.A wealth of meaning behind the titleTo understand where the academic critics went wrong, it’s useful to look at what Diamond signified by his title, Guns, Germs, and Steel. Early in his book, he dwells on the confrontation between the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro and the Inca god-king Atahuallpa. “The immediate reasons for Pizarro’s success included military technology based on guns, steel weapons [such as swords and daggers], and horses; infectious diseases endemic in Eurasia; European maritime technology; the centralized political organization of European states; and writing. The title of this book will serve as shorthand for those proximate factors.”Diamond’s argument in a nutshellIn a Prologue, Diamond poses the question at the heart of this book. He quotes a friend in what is now Papua New Guinea from a conversation in 1972, when he was studying bird evolution there: “‘Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo [goods] and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?'” To answer the question, Diamond begins his story around the year 11,000 BCE, when the last Ice Age was drawing to a close and human beings were beginning to form villages in a few places around the world. It’s unclear whether the formation of villages preceded the deliberate cultivation and production of food, or vice versa. However, regardless of the sequence, that shift from hunter-gatherer society to agriculturally based settlements set in motion the course of events that have led to the “civilization” in which we live.Diamond argues, convincingly, that the much greater availability of domesticable plants and large animals in Eurasia than in sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas. Furthermore, he explains that the east-west orientation of Eurasia from the Bering Strait to the Atlantic Ocean made it possible for the development of agriculture and animal husbandry to spread quickly to distant lands. By contrast, the north-south orientation of the Americas and sub-Saharan Africa—and the presence of barriers such as the Sahara Desert, the Panamanian Isthmus, and the deserts of northern Mexico and southwestern United States—impeded the spread of these (and, later, other) new technologies to the extremities of those continents. The advent of food production enabled the development of ever-larger settlements. This, in turn, spelled the emergence of labor specialization and eventually the growth of empires as well as the appearance and spread of communicable diseases contracted from domesticated animals. Those differences in historical development eventually led to the “guns, germs, and steel” that made Eurasian dominance possible—and dictated the huge differences in economic development between what today we call East and West.Guns, Germs, and Steel is crammed with facts and densely written. It doesn’t make for light reading. But if you have any interest in understanding how the world came to be as it is, you’ll find this book highly rewarding.

Here is an author with an inquisitive mind. He searches, not how human races are different, but how they got there. What are the mechanisms that drove their various civilizations in such different trajectories? There exist only a limited number of plants and mammals that lend themselves to domestication and their availability determines the chances of hunter-gatherers to turn into a settled society and to progress in further advancement. In ancient times, if those essential domesticates were not present on your continent, you were indeed a have-not. In these pages you travel around the world and witness, how such factors have favored some sections of humanity more than others. This book is a wellspring of information about where we come from and the author distributes it out of a basket of abundant knowledge. You witness the changing face of humanity, usually under the passionate hand of brutality, from Khoisans to Bantus in Africa, from Negritos to Austro-Asians and Austronesians in the Far East, from the Ainus to Japanese, and then of course in that collision of the white man with the Redskins. The incredible judgment dispensed by Francisco Pizarro upon the Incas, supposedly in honor of the Church and the Holy Roman Emperor, will make you shake your head for a long time.In contrast to such scholarly research, it is hard to stomach the tasteless comments in some of the one-star reviews of this book. They remind you of what the Bible says about pearls and where you are not to cast them.

Where do I begin? Was he paid by the number of pages he wrote? Goes into way too much detail about things no one cares about. Also he is simply selecting things in history that conveniently fit his thesis, this is selection bias.He makes way too many sweeping generalizations and says that is the reason why so and so country is rich today. He writes that the larger the population a country has (e.g., it will have more Einsteins), the more competition there will be among its people and there will be more innovators among that population and therefore the country will invent more stuff and eventually become richer. If that's the case then why have no significant inventions come out of India or China in the past 100 years when they have 4x the population of the U.S.?This book has so many flaws in logic I don't even know how it is so highly rated on Amazon. Oh wait.. I get it now.

I first saw a documentary that is based on this book. Because of the documentary, I bought this book. The best part of this book is that it is loaded with details and facts to support the author's message; no human race is inferior to another. Oddly, my least favorite part is also that the book is loaded with details. At times my reading would get bogged down or I would get a bit lost because I was overwhelmed with all the facts. But I put on my big girl pants and keep reading. Most importantly, I learned a lot about how humans came to be industrialized on one geographical location and not so much in another.

125 Best Gluten-Free Bread Machine Recipes, by Donna Washburn Heather Butt

Review

125 Best Gluten-Free Bread Machine Recipes by Donna Washburn and Heather Butt is an absolute goldmine of fabulous recipes for making all sorts of gluten free goodies in your bread machine. Before receiving my own copy of this book, I'd read reviews on Amazon.com which stated that the authors actually wrote this book for the zojirushi bread machine. This is not the case. In fact, this book has a lot of guidance for using any 1.5 to 2 pound bread machine for baking. Each recipe is written with a typical wheat setting in mind, but a gluten free setting is recommended. I have been using a Cuisinart bread machine with a gluten free setting for baking recipes from this book and I could not be more pleased with the results. You do not need to have the most expensive bread machine on the market in order to be successful making gluten free breads. Each recipe I've tried from this book (and I've tried most of them) has come out beautifully. My family's favorite gluten free breads are the Henk's Flax Bread and the Cinnamon Raison Bread, which turns out better than any bakery loaf, bar none! We all refer lovingly to Henk's Flax Bread as "Uncle Henk's Bread", as we feel a true bond with this "Henk" and his wondrous bread. We used to purchase healthy grain breads from the grocery store each week. However, since receiving this cookbook back in February, we have not bought one single loaf of bread. I've been making ALL of our bread from scratch, using no other book than this one. Because of this, we've saved money, lost weight, and we're eating so much more nutritiously now. Honestly, if you plan on making gluten free breads in your bread machine, this is the book you need. Store-bought gluten free breads can be dry and tasteless, but the breads you'll make from recipes in this book will most definately amaze you. I give this book 5 spatulas! This is a must have book for anyone with a bread machine. I would recommend trying the cinnamon raison bread and henk's flax bread for anyone who is using a bread machine and would like a healthy alternative to ordinary breads. These are sooooooooo good. So far, I have made Gluten Free White Bread and a Gluten Free Pizza Crust and they both were delicious. And we're much yummier than when I make bread or pizza crust with bread flour with gluten recipes.I am the only one in the family who has issues with gluten but I also have a very difficult time digesting barley flour which is a big part of bread flour. It gives me terrible gas, bloating and stomach pain. No barley soups for me. So for me Gluten Free is a necessity.Have to watch last several minutes of bake cycle with my T-Fal Bread Machine because it can burn the crust on my Gluten Free Bread. And I really recommend the "Plain Pizza Crust" recipe because it is delicious and very easy to make.

When we got started with gluten-free bread making, we bought three books and a Zojirushi BBCCX20 Home Bakery Supreme Bread Machine. The first recipe we tried was from the bread maker manual, which turned out heavy and relatively tasteless. Our second recipe was the breadsticks from this book (page 146). We made them exactly as the recipe described, and scored a delicious success. The best part of this book is its completeness. Each recipe includes full ingredients and instructions, like most books. But it also includes specific instructions on measuring the temperature, customizing machine cycles, etc. We learned a lot by making recipes from this book before trying recipes from our other two books. To be successful with gluten-free bread making, you need the right machine. Pages 15-19 of this book give specific recommendations on how to choose the right one. If you want my one sentence answer, buy the Zojirushi, which meets all of the requirements described there. You need a machine that can handle gluten-free dough, which is often thicker and heavier than wheat dough. The Zojirushi has two paddles in a horizontal baking tray, instead of one paddle in a vertical tray like many smaller machines. It is also programmable, which helps a lot. More tips:* Make each recipe EXACTLY as recommended the first time. That will allow you to compare any changes you make with the results obtained by the authors.* Measure ingredients exactly, particularly flours. Don't pack the flour into the measuring cup, just scoop into the measuring cup and scrape off the excess. If you tap or otherwise pack the flour into the cup, you'll end up with too much of that flour, by perhaps 20% or more.* Measure temperature after baking cycles, as often recommended in this book.* If you have hard water (ours is very hard) use bottled spring water for baking. This can make a surprising difference.Gluten free baking requires practice, but the result is worth the effort. Enjoy!

If you enjoy variety and hearty, denser whole-grain breads, this is the gluten-free bread machine cookbook for you. Check the labels on the gluten-free breads on grocery store shelves, and most list tapioca starch, potato starch, or cornstarch (maybe white rice flour) as their first dry ingredient. Brown rice flour listed first is probably the best you can find. Starches may have a long shelf life and produce a tall "fluffy" loaf, but are sadly lacking in nutrition and flavor. Many gluten free baking cookbooks and recipes are the same. They may have nice rounded tops, but I want to eat my bread and savor the great flavors, not look at it. I bought and promptly returned two gluten-free cookbooks by Elizabeth Barbone when I found the baked goods were made entirely with white rice flour, sweet rice flour, and starches. It's easier to make a fluffy loaf with lots of (empty) starches. What Donna and Heather have done is a much tougher challenge: to make great-tasting nutritious loaves with 25-35% starches and 65-75% whole grain flours. I haven't found anyone who's done it better. No, some of these bread loaves will not have rounded tops - many will be rectangular. Maybe the top will even sink in a bit as they cool. Get used to it - close your eyes and enjoy. I've baked about one loaf a week out of this cookbook for a year and a half in the Zojirushi BB-PAC20 Virtuoso breadmaker before writing this review. I was getting a lot of sunken tops and recently figured out my rise time was too long. I heat water to 85-95° in microwave and warm my eggs in a bowl of warm water while mixing dry ingredients and skip the "Rest" (pre-heat ingredients) cycle. I may lower my rise times even more. My current "Homemade" (custom) settings in the Zojirushi finish a loaf in 2hr 13min: Rest (Preheat) 0 min (not needed because warm up eggs and water before adding) Knead 18 min* Shape 0 min Rise1 10 min Rise2 10 min Rise3 30 min Bake 65 min(* I take out paddles and make smooth rounded top with silicone spatula when machine stops kneading)Some bread machine cookbooks make lots of recipe from a single flour blend, to save the time measuring out three or four kinds of flour. I tried the "blend" way and ultimately came right back to baking all my breads from this cookbook measuring out 3-6 different flours and starches. I discovered that it still took me 25-30min to get most loaves started in the bread machine regardless of whether I measure one flour blend or four kinds of flour. If you enjoy a variety of flavors and experimenting to find which flours you like best, this cookbook is definitely the way to go. The real sacrifice with the variety of flours in this cookbook isn't time measuring. It's losing some space in your fridge (or cupboards) if you store 6-to-10 22oz bags of amaranth, quinoa, bean (or yellow pea), and teff flours, millet seeds, rice bran, etc. I keep them all in a half-full 2-gal ziplock freezer bag to haul out at baking time and quickly see the ones I need from any side through the clear plastic.Recipes high in starches make the lightest and fluffiest loaves. Of the whole grains, I find teff flour, (yellow) pea flour, bean flour (such as garbanzo bean), brown rice, sorghum, and millet flours seem to produce the lightest and fluffiest loaves (in that order, with loaves containing between 1/4 cup and 1 cup teff and yellow pea flour being the tallest and lightest). Fluffy is most important to me when I'm trying to create a loaf "tall" enough for slices to make a sandwich bread. The other flours in this cookbook add interesting flavors and nutrition and tend to create denser loaves that may not rise as high.At a minimum to start off with this cookbook, you'll want tapioca starch, potato starch, cornstarch, brown rice flour, and sorghum flour. Nearly every recipe will be heavily based on at least one of these these two flours and three starches. I don't keep sorghum flour in the fridge because I go through it pretty quickly and these other four don't need it. I sacrificed half a drawer in my refrigerator to store open packages of other flours that I don't go through so quickly and which have more "germ" or bran (= more protein and less starch). Half a drawer because I alternate between at least two dozen of these recipes - most people probably won't make this many recipes so won't need this many flours.Amaranth flour, bean flour (garbanzo etc), and quinoa flour are next most common and will allow you to try a large share of the recipes in this book. Rice bran, flax meal, and oat flour show up in at least 4 or 5 recipes each. Teff flour and flaxmeal don't show up in many recipes, but could easily be substituted into plenty of others for their great added flavor or nutrition. Make sure you get Instant/Bread Machine Yeast. I accidentally bought a jar of Active Dry Yeast once and it took over a month before I realized why my breads weren't rising as much anymore.I recommend you start with Cinnamon Raisin Bread as a foolproof recipe to boost your confidence with an early success. It's one of the "fluffiest" loaves since it's made entirely with brown rice flour and starches, and tastes great. Also my favorite or making french toast.I made the hamburger buns on p. 145 several times with total success - light and fluffy and looked like a hamburger bun should. I make them in USA Pan Mini Round Cake Pan x6 (same one King Arthur sells) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QXW3Q4/Bonus - while sandwich breads might disappoint you if they don't rise as high as the bread you used to buy, that's never an issue for buns lying flat in the oven. For some reason these buns don't keep as long as either loaves or muffins though. More surface area? O because more pure starches and less whole grain flour than the other recipes? So I individually wrap some of the buns in a paper towel and put each one in a plastic baggie with as little air as possible to avoid freezer burn, put several of these in a ziplock freezer bag, and they come out great when I get them out again (others suggest doing this with bread slices too). Smoothing the top of any loaf at the end of the knead cycle before the rise cycle begins seems to make any of them keep longer when I wrap them tightly in a 1-gallon plastic Baggie (or bread bag) and keep them in a drawer at room temperature (most of my loaves keep a week to ten days like this).Historic Grains, Ancient Grains, Whole Grain Amaranth Bread, Multi-Grain Bread, and Lemon Millet Bread all fall into the denser but delicious category. All use at least 3/4 cup amaranth flour. Loaves made with amaranth are among my favorites even though they don't rise quite as high - they have a rich flavor almost like there's butter in them. Ignore if you get a slightly sunken-in top and enjoy. Amaranth is a very moist flour, which is why you'll inevitably get denser loaves. I try to get in 1/3 or 1/2 cup even when I try to make a sandwich bread, then do everything else possible to make the loaf lighter.Millet, sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds show up in some of my favorite hearty recipes to add crunch and nutrition. Triple Seed Brown Bread and Country Harvest Bread both make denser but delicious loaves if you look for bread with over-the-top whole-grain goodness.Grandma's Brown bread mixes both sorghum and brown rice flour, so it's a great starting point anytime you want to experiment with substituting other blends of many flours. Use more flour in place of part of the rice bran if you agree with me that 1/2 cup gives it too strong a flavor that overpowers other flavors in a sandwich. I learned the hard way I need to store rice bran in the fridge after it's opened. (oops) I'm still on a quest for the best multi-grain sandwich bread. My best so far is to adapt Grandma's Brown bread recipe, using 1c brown rice, 2/3c potato starch, 1/3c tapioca starch, 1/3c teff flour, 1/4c each of sorghum, millet and amaranth flours, 2 Tbsp flax meal, 2 Tbsp yellow pea (or garbanzo/bean) flour, and 1 Tbsp potato flour. Substitute more brown rice flour or sorghum/millet for any of these you don't have.Millet flour is not listed in this cookbook but I often substitute it for some of the sorghum. Millet flour gives an especially nice brown crust, something I learned from Annalise Roberts's Gluten Free Baking Classics for the Bread Machine. At first I had to buy 4 bags on Amazon, now I begin to see it in some local stores. A tablespoon or two of potato flour (NOT the same as potato starch) can help a loaf hold together better and not be crumbly (learned this from Kelli and Peter Bronski's Artisanl Gluten-Free cooking). Bean/pea flour hold together well too. Oat flour makes bread moist (but also more crumbly). The main downside of my latest sandwich breads is they're dry enough it's hard to eat sandwiches quickly, I need to have something to drink handy. Next experiments will be to add more (grapeseed) oil and try substituting out flours one at a time to get something less crumbly.Cranberry Orange Bread and Cranberry Raisin Bread are two favorite moist snack breads I make over and over. The Cranberry Raisin Bread came out 4in tall at least once, despite the fact both of these have at least 3/4c amaranth flour. I used 1 & 1/4c 27% cranberry juice cocktail in place of 1/4c pure cranberry juice and 1c water and it turned out great. Oatmeal Date Loaf and Date Nut Loaf are two other favorites I've made several times over. Great for making french toast too.Apricot Pecan Loaf is one of my favorite snack breads. This, Fruited Farm Brack, Dried Apple Nut Bread and Teff Bread are the only four recipes in this cookbook that use teff flour. Although teff flour's harder to find locally, is expensive and shows up in very few recipes in this book, in some ways it's the ideal substitute to approximate "whole wheat" bread. It has a unique delicious nutty whole-wheat flavor and is packed with nutrition without creating denser loaves. In fact the loaves seem to turn out a bit taller and fluffier if I substitute 1/4 cup teff flour for 1/4 cup of brown rice or sorghum flour. Teff is the world's tiniest grain which means more germ and bran compared to what's inside, making it very high in protein and packed with minerals and nutrients. You can substitute 1/8 or 1/4 cup flaxmeal and/or up to 1/2 cup teff flour into lots of these recipes that don't call for them anytime you want to boost the nutrition and flavor.TALL LOAF AWARDS (some may be flukes, but ones marked * repeatedly turned out tall)Cinnamon Raisin Bread**Apricot Pecan Loaf*Brown Sandwich BreadFruited Mock PumpernickelCranberry Raisin BreadBanana Seed Loaf(White Bread would probably be guaranteed, but I haven't made it once)I think the Italian Herb Bread did too but I didn't keep track in beginningBoth the Brown Sandwich Bread and the Fruited Mock Pumpernickel loaf turned out taller and fluffier than most of the other recipes, and both use a whole cup of pea flour. I liked these two but wouldn't want to a loaf with this much pea flour every week - my personal preference. And I don't think I want to use it for sandwiches, despite the name. I read green pea flour was sweeter than yellow pea flour, however learned from experience even 1/4 cup of the green adds a distinct greenish cast to the whole loaf as well as a distinctive flavor. I can definitely taste it if I put in even 1/4c with 3 cups of other flours. May ultimately put just 1/8 cup into all my sandwich breads, and if I buy more, will buy yellow pea flour (not green) next time.Banana seed bread turned out 4 & 1/4 inches high, an inch taller than so many other recipes, even though it has only 1/4 cup of starch. The loaf I made seemed really bland and I hardly tasted the bananas when I tried it once, but the bananas probably just weren't ripe enough. It was soft and fluffy, even a bit like a sponge cake. Keep in mind bean/pea flour is a FODMAP if that's the reason you're avoiding wheat instead of the gluten. Two final tips: Don't want those paddles baked into the bottom of your bread loaf? You can take 5-6 strips of 0.09" or so diameter replacement weed trimmer line (new unused of course!) bend it into a loop and bind the two ends together with a strong rubber band to make something that looks like a small flat whisk. Right after the kneading cycle ends I use this tool to slide the loops under the paddle right up next to the shaft and pull straight up next to the shaft to fish the two paddles out of the bottom of my Zojirushi Virtuoso. Scrape most of the dough left on this "whisk" off with a small spatula, which you can then use to scrape the sides of the pan and smooth the top of the loaf before it begins the rise cycle. Beats using your fingers, and removing a quarter cup of raw dough on your fingers in the process. And I learned that if I use a silicone spatula to shape a smooth and rounded top to the bread at the end of the kneading cycle just before the rise cycle (right after I remove the paddles), I end up with a more rounded top when it's done baking.Hope this helps in your quest for great-tasting nutritious bread without the wheat.****** followup 4/17/2016When I want something for hamburger buns or sandwiches, my favorite is to adapt the recipe for Hamburger Buns on p. 145. In place of six buns using 1 & 3/4 cups brown rice flour, I substitute:1/2 cup brown rice flour1/2 cup teff flour1/2 cup millet flour (toasts nicely, something I learned from Analise Roberts cookbook)2 Tbsp quinoa meal2 Tbsp flaxseed meal1 & 3/4 cup total whole-grain floursI have a pair of the USA Pan Bakeware Aluminized Steel Mini Round Cake Pan 6-Well which are wonderful and I recommend highly. These are the same bun pans sold on the King Arthur Flour website, and they need no oil to come out of the pan nicely (in fact, the one that I used oil in at first sticks a bit because the oil baked on). In place of six HUGE fluffy hamburger buns as the p. 145 recipe is written, I make 10-12 English-muffin shaped breads that I use for most of my sandwiches as well as hamburgers. Teff, quinoa and flaxseed meal make this a very nutritious sandwich bread and they still turn out great and fluffy (this is what makes teff an ideal baking flour anytime you want a nutritious load and "whole wheat" flavor without a dense loaf). One plus of making the individual buns/English muffin shapes as opposed to making one loaf and slicing it, is that the individual buns aren't as likely to collapse as one huge loaf. Then I wrap pairs of the buns/English muffins in plastic baggies, freeze these inside a freezer ziplock bag, and I can thaw just a couple anytime I want.I increase the oil from 1/4 cup to 3/8 cup (6 Tbsp) to make the bread less crumbly (I like grapeseed oil, sometimes I also add some olive oil). Adding 50% more vegetable oil is an adaption I make with a lot of the recipes so they hold together better.

From the strong influence of his Father, Augustus to his first Seminary Prof, Augustus Strong and German Theologians, Albrecht Ritschl, Friedrich Schleiermacher, Adolph von Harnack, then to American influence of Charles Sheldon and Washington Gladden. It was his star-studded pathway into the forefront of the liberal, social gospel movement that led to Liberation Theology of the 20th Century! W R began his 4 yr sojourn as student in a German Gymnasium located in the small Westphalia city of Gutersloh. His father Augustus wished to expose him to German higher education. Then to mature him in the religious & cultural environment of his own theological orthydoxy of Lutheran Pietism. Years later W R commented on his education in Germany as bringing him to no outlook except soul-saving: "I had no outlook except a common evangelicalism!" He entered those years of 1876 to 1886 when Liberal Theology was influenced by Phillips Brooks, Henry Ward Beecher and Washington Gladden. They were strong influences upon the preaching, writings and teaching of Walter R.Curiously his student writings lack references to the doctrine that became the cornerstone of later liberalism: The Kingdom of God. Many members of the Rochester Seminary were hostile to the theologian, Ritschl. W R would later embrace the persective of Ritschl and disciple, Adolph von Harnack, around the theme, The Kingdom of God. Even more revealing was the gradual maturity of his ambivalence toward the "institutional church." The model he and others sought to implement: "The institutional church is a necessary evil. Make social life healthy and you can simplify the work of the church. Let poverty and helplessness increase and you increase work of the church too."In 1918 the faith of Walter was focused upon death. One of his most famous, oft used Prayers was given the title by his wife, Pauline, "The Little Gate to God." Reflecting the deep faith by which he confronted his early death at 56 of Colon Cancer, he penned this prayer beginning, "In the castle of my soul is a little postern gate, Whereat, when I enter, I am in the presence of God." Even Johns Hopkins Hospital could not uncover or give them any medical solution. His prayer captured the essence of Walter's understanding of the social gospel movement. He became one of the Giants of his day as an example of faithful living, inseparable from the reality of social struggle and inevitable consequence of social struggle was suffering and death!"Christopher Evans, Prof of Church History at Colgate Rochester Cozer Divinity School has given us the definitive story of W.R. Called by Harvey Cox as a "timely and absorbing book" about the life of the most neglected yet outstanding person who stood at the beginning of Liberation Theology! Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

For anyone interested in the history of US Christianity in the 20th century this book offers valuable insights. Evans nicely balances the moving story of Rauschenbush's personal life with a careful analysis of his intellectual and spiritual development. After reading Rauschenbusch's life-story, the reader only wishes that the 21st century had someone of his stature to help us interpret the signs of these troubled and confusing times.

Children's Books: I LOVE MY DAD (Bedtime Story, Illustrated Picture Book, About Father's Love, Beginner Readers, Ages 3-5, 6-8): (Bedtime stories books ... stories children's book collection)Ebook comes with clickable free gift. Colorful children's book about a boy and his dad. Perfect for Father's day to have your child read this book to his dad. I've read other works by teh author: I love my mom so know this will be another great book to cherish.Starts out with Jimmy being too small to ride the bigger boys bikes and he feels sad but he climbs on one of the bikes to show them that he can do everything they can.He ends up crashing and finds a mud puddle. When his dad sees him he tries to cheer him up and is able to do that. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end. His dad thinks he may be ready for a two wheeler....Great bonding book!

Jimmy is a bunny who rides a tricycle. He can't keep up with his older brothers who ride two-wheelers. Jimmy feels awful and goes home in tears. His dad cheers him up and offers to teach him how to ride a bicycle. Soon Jimmy is going just as fast as the others. Maybe even faster!I Love My Dad is a charming story that shows how a little perseverance and love can go a long way. The illustrations are nicely done and compliment the story well. I Love My Dad is a story that would appeal to children ages 4-7 - especially those just learning to ride a bicycle.

What a great story of how these boys' father was able to brighten his youngest son's days when he was so low and very unhappy at being left behind when his two older brothers decided to race on their bikes and the youngest was left in the dust, etc. I would recommend this for kids5-8 and in grades P-3. Because this really showed how much the Kids's dad really loved all his sons and the great and colorful illustrations that I felt it needs five stars. I received this ebook for free and in return here is my honest review. Great work Lily! By Angela

Jimmy the rabbit was the youngest of three brothers. He wanted to ride and race his bicycleg just like his brothers. But his bike was small with training wheels. His brothers laughed at him.Dad didn't laugh though. This warm little book illustrates what a parent, dad in this case, can do to help a child learn and make his way in the world.Loved the artwork also

I Loved it!! Cute story! I'm enjoying all of the stories about Jimmy and his brothers! Thank you Shelley Admont!

Easy reads for beginners

Poor Jimmy the Bunny.....he is the youngest of the family and is just too small to be able to ride a two wheel bike. His two older brothers have great laughs at his expense. (I know the feeling as I was also the youngest of three!), Dad knew how to cheer him up, however, after he fell into a mud puddle. And, Dad promised him that he would teach him to ride the BIG bike.Dad built Jimmy's confidence up riding the two wheel bike and soon Jimmy was riding all by himself. I like the fact that the author has Jimmy put his helmet on before going for a spin. The drawings are so cute in this short book. I love the big ears and the colorful noses! The author suggests this book is for ages 5-- 8 and P - 3.Most highly recommended.

Shelley Admont is a successful mom and a successful creator of children's books that are for both entertainment and lessons for behavior for children. In this book she has wisely engaged illustrators Sonal Goyal and Sumit Sakhuja who provide wonderful images for Admont's story. We're back with the bunnies - Jimmy and his brothers are riding bicycles while their father reads in the backyard. Jimmy rides a tricycle and can't keep up with his older brothers on bikes. Jimmy feels it is unfair not to have a 2-wheeler but his brothers tease him and tell him he is too small. Jimmy tries but falls off the bike into the mud and his brothers laugh, making Jimmy run home crying. His father inquires about the problem and his father decides to change Jimmy's mood by making him laugh by tickling him. Success and Jimmy's father says after a bath he'll teach him to ride a 2-wheeler tomorrow. The next morning - a bit too early - Jimmy is ready to learn so he awakens his father and they dress and go out to the 2-wheeler. Jimmy's father removes the training wheels, gives Jimmy a helmet, and stays close by while Jimmy slowly learns how to ride on his own. And guess who wins the next brothers' riding race....Nice story, nice illustrations, nice lessons. Just what we have learned to expect from Shelley Admont. Grady Harp, May 15

Such a contrast between the turbulent and lawless way in which Mexico developed its government, and the orderly and lawful way it was done north of the border in USA and Canada. The legacy will live with Mexico for the foreseeable future with no hope of relief. Let's hope the counties north of the border takes the lesson seriously. I wonder how much of that has to do with the difference in culture between Spain and England.

What a protracted endeavour the 'revolution' was: with a rather rapid succession of conflicts and presidents.Seemingly all driven by overblown male egos, and a soupçon of religion.Hourly History wraps it all up into a neat book.Could have taken a bit more care with grammar here and there, including use of the comma.

I have spent a considerable amount of time in Mexico and knew most of the revolutionary names, now I can connect them to the events. A well written account of the events and the aftermath of the Mexican revolution.

Reading any of this book series are well worth your time.

Well written, thorough and brief - almost too brief. All the individuals who made up the history span written about were very well outlined and their participation given their due value.

Well written and easy to grasp. I hope for an expanded version in the future. Understanding Mexico is critical to those of us in the US.

Expected a history book and received a pamphlet written for sixth graders.

This book is an exceptional chronical of the leaders, people, factions, and events that shaped the 1910 Mexican Revolution and the bloody civil war that followed. Its design is to provide the reader with an understanding of the revolution and its impact on the national idenity of modern Mexico. This book was professionally researched from numerous primary and secondary sources, written, and published by Hourly History. This publishing house has produced an extensive collection of thoroughly researched, concise, informative, and well written historical texts purposfully designed to be read in one to two hours. This historical collection is focused on chronicaling lives of important historical persons, key events, nations, and peoples. I have read a number of their offerings and found each volume well written, researched, informative and presented with an unbiased perspective. This book describes the period of more than ten years, that included the overthrow of the government in 1910, and the following intense and bloody civil war with a confusing array of factions engaged in an ever-changing alliances to take power and then lost it. Presidents were elected (or elected themselves) and were then deposed or assassinated. New factions appeared which appealed to specific segments of the people, took to the field, and were either wiped out and never heard of again or became the next government. The civil war producedheroes whose names live on in legend and villains whose bloody exploits are still horrifying. It also caused anything up to two million casualties both as a direct result of the fighting and in the famine, economic hardship, and disease which followed in its wake. Modern Mexico was created out of the turmoil of the Mexican Revolution. This book was well researched and written. It was presented to provide the information in a concise manner, readible in one to two hours. I found that it explained a very complex event, in a remarkably clear and understandable manner. Readers who enjoy history or those who are interested in knowing more about Mexico will enjoy this book.
